Makarov - Black Ops Multiplayer Weapon Guide

In this episode we're covering the Makarov.
It's a semi automatic pistol, unlocked at level 4.
Originating from the Soviet Union, the pistol is named for its designer, Nikolay Makarov.
It was introduced as the standard sidearm for the Soviet military in 1951, replacing the earlier Tokarev in service.
The PM, or Pistolet Makarova is a compact blowback-operated weapon, loosely based on the earlier German Walther PP design.
A simple, reliable weapon - with few moving parts - the Makarov has seen extensive deployment in both military and police roles over much of Eastern Europe.
Magazine capacity is 8 rounds - second only to the CZ-75 in-game, and generous enough for most usage.
The cartridge fired is the 9 by 18 millimetre Makarov round - analogous to the NATO 9 millimetre round, but in terms of ballistics more comparable to the less-powerful .380 ACP.
Damage in-game is identical to all other pistols, except for the Python - typically requiring 3 hits to kill at close range, and 5 at a distance.
Rate of fire is capped to 625 rounds per minute - the same as most pistols, with the exception of the ASP.
Recoil is again, identical to all other pistols except for the Python - and is not a factor as long as you're close to your target.
Aim time is as fast as the other pistols, at just 150 milliseconds - and the reload is fairly average for its class, at a little over 1.6 seconds.
The pistols share much in the way of their statistics, so there's not much to choose between them - it's the available attachments and subtler statistics that define each handgun.
The Upgraded Iron Sights are one of your attachment choices, but their effect is purely cosmetic - three white dots applied to the front and rear sights giving slightly clearer target indication.
They aren't much use - unlike a red dot sight which provides a better view on target, the dots do nothing for your sight picture, so I wouldn't advise using them over another, more useful attachment.
Extended mags are generally a very worthwhile attachment - and on the Makarov you'll get 12 rounds at your disposal instead of 8.
However, If you value capacity in a pistol, then I'd advise you steer clear of the Makarov - instead go with the M1911, as it will give you 14 rounds with precisely the same handling characteristics - and even that is supplanted once you unlock the CZ-75.
The Makarov is best used with the other attachments available - with the suppressor you'll have the highest capacity pistol while suppressed, at least until you unlock the CZ-75 - so for those who favour stealth, the Makarov is the best choice initially.
You do lose a significant portion of your effective range, so against an enemy with full health you'll find a 4 or 5 hit kill is much more likely - but as a silent backup to finish off an already-wounded enemy it's ideal.
Dual wield gives you two Makarovs, for a total of 16 shots between them.
The Makarov is probably one of the better choices for Dual Wield - while they don't have the capacity of the CZ-75, or the power of the Pythons - they do have a very rapid switch time.
They'll switch as quickly as the dual ASPs - but with a slightly larger capacity, they're a better choice if you're looking for a fast-swapping dual-wield backup.
If you value capacity, the M1911 with extended mags is the best choice before the CZ-75. If you favour speed, then elect the ASP. Finally, if you favour power - then the Python is the handgun for you.
The Makarov, then, fills the gaps - it's the best pistol, immediately available, to use with the suppressor.
It's also the quickest drawing pistol to use with Dual Wield - so if you're looking for a close-range backup that's fast on target the Makarovs are probably the best choice.
Its capacity advantage with certain attachments is usurped by the almighty CZ-75 once its unlocked, but before the final pistol is available the Makarov has a couple of advantages over the others.
Otherwise, it's a relatively unremarkable weapon - but as with all the pistols can be a potential lifesaver when you find your primary weapon unready or inadequate for a close-range engagement.
Either suppressed or with a pistol in either hand, the Makarov is an able backup - compact, quick on the draw ... and ready to tilt the odds in your favour.

As someone who owns a Makarov, the reloading animation for the Mak on blackops always bugged me since theyre not actually engaging the magazine release. Makarovs have a European style magazine release where its on the bottom of the pistol next to the butt of the magazine.

The crazy Weaponcrafter The "original" holster is actually leather, the spetznas one is sort of an "aftermarket" thing. I have that one. Also my specific Makarov probably wouldnt work since its an IJ-70 Mak that russia built for export so it has adjustable rear sights instead of standard fixed sights, that would most likely cause fitting issues with it like it does on most plastic holsters.

I know its a joke but 9mm Makarov is distinguished from 9mm Luger and 9mm Browning (.380) because those are not interchangeable. And calling them all simply 9mm would cause helluva confusion

Here's a good james bond stealth class for a makarov primary: mpl suppressor (it's a german weapon like the walther ppk) secondary: suppressor (because it looks a lot like james bonds classic walther ppk pistol) perks ghost, sleight of hand and ninja pro equipment: semtex, flashbang or decoy and jammer device.

Personally, I find the upgraded iron sights a little more useful than what's been said. Although it is only a cosmetic change, I find myself staying on target easier at all ranges. But I guess it's more personal preference than anything.

The unrealistic depiction of pistol in game is annoying. 1. It has heel mag release so one handed mag drop is not gonna happen (reload animations are not accurate) 2. military issue makarovs did not had ability to change sights. only much later commercial IJ-70 Baikal had removable ones 3. extended mags in game are pure fantasy. Because how that heel mag release retains the magazine its not really possible. However there were some later double stack versions of similar design that offered 12 round capacity. (CZ-82 and IZH-71H) P.S. just recently got myself genuine Soviet 1972 Ижeвск made PM. Sweet shooter.

@Hariq IW is a game about future. So its fantasy like Star wars. Have no problem with that. 'inspired by real weapons' and 'cod-styled personalty' now that's an interesting concept. in other words developers were too lazy to find out how the actual weapon functions and recycled pistol animations from the rest of the handguns. I guess you are right. With realistic guns it wouldn't be CoD, it would be something better...

@Hariq There we go. We can agree that Cod Devs are sometimes lazy and cut corners where they can get away with it. Extended magazines issue could be solved by real life solution. A double stack Makarov. There were quite a few to chose from. And lastly I understand that Cod is never tried to be super realistic. otherwise sitting in the corner for 5 seconds will not heal you. But you have to admit. Nobody can drop magazine out of Makarov with one hand. That is two hand operation. And not super hard to add such animation as many different even way older games than COD:BO did. Same goes whit other games like Call of Juarez where in the animations of reloading Winchester lever action they don't even use fucking loading gate that was even modeled and sticks rounds in the bottom of the rifle like it was a shotgun. Shows lack of knowledge or laziness or both on developer part.

@Hariq Oh yeah. WW2 was pretty darn terrible. Biggest pet peeve of mine there was MG42, Model is done OK, but rate of fire... it just feels like a nerf gun. I guess the more developers spends time on new more impressive graphic engine they spend way less on realistic features and manual of arms in some cases. Good example is how in CS 1.6 all handguns had slide lock back after last round fired while CS:GO doesn't even have it.

the 5.56mm round has a smaller bullet that allows for better penetration of armor and also the tumbling effect within a body, which is when a bullet flips around in the trajectory in your body, causing massive damage to your internals, thus providing more damage to personnel. Obviously, if you are looking at brute force for eg taking down a heli or trying to hit someone behind a thin wall you would go for the 7.62mm.

@Wabaanimkii The M16 rifles were just recently made 3 round burst. On campaign they're fully automatic because it was back in the Vietnam war. The M4A1 is fully automatic because it's technically not an M16. It's a shorter version of the M16A2. The M4A1 is an M4 rifle. Hence the full auto.

@LinkinAssassin No he is not. He goes by the classes and then by the level you unlock it. So first the first Assault Rifle, then the first SMG, then the first Shotgun, then the first LMG, then the first sniper, the first pistol the first secondary. then the second assault rifle and so on.
