In this episode, we're covering the second Light Machine Gun, the RPK.
It's fully automatic, as you'd expect - and is unlocked at level 6.
The RPK, or 'rooch-noy pul-eh-myot kalashnikova' is a weapon that originates from the former Soviet Union, and is a derivation of Kalashnikov's AK-47 design.
The version represented in game is actually the RPK-74, based on the AK-74 rifle, which were both introduced in 1974.
Essentially a longer barrelled version of the infantry rifle with an attached bipod, the RPK supplanted the earlier RPD as the Red Army's primary LMG.
As both the AK and RPK-74 share a large number of manufactured parts, supply and maintenance of the weapons is more easily managed, and production more efficient.
Magazine capacity is 40 rounds, or 80 with extended magazines - giving you an extra 33 percent when compared to the similar HK21.
The RPK-74 fires the 5.45 by 39 millimetre M74 round - a smaller, high velocity round designed to yaw in flesh and cause devastating cavitation.
Damage in-game is comparable to the other LMGs, consistent at all ranges and high by most other weapon's standards.
Like the HK21 and Stoner 63, the RPK will kill in 3 hits at any range - or two hits if both are headshots.
Rate of fire is on par with the HK21, too - 750 rounds per minute place it squarely in the middle of the category as far as fire rates are concerned.
One major downside to the RPK is its heavy recoil - when fired automatically the RPK will exhibit a severe upwards pull, making staying on target nearly impossible.
Outside of close range, the only way to effectively employ the RPK is to fire in short bursts, waiting for the recoil to settle before firing again.
This mitigates the effect of the recoil, and has the added benefit of prolonging your ability to provide supporting fire.
Aim time is typically slow for an LMG - 350 milliseconds, and despite being magazine-fed has a painfully slow 4 second reload.
The RPK is a hard weapon to handle but offers significant and sustainable support fire, with potential capacity second only to the M60 and with a faster rate of fire.
Treating it as a burst fire takes advantage of the weapon's high damage over longer sightlines, and steady aim allows you to reposition frequently while maintaining a good close range defence through hipfire.
Adopt a support gunner role, with a Strela-3, Hardline and team-oriented killstreaks, and you'll be the model team player, tilting a game's odds in your favour.
You pay for the abundance of firepower of the RPK through very slow handling, and a level of recoil above most other automatic weapons.
It may not be a weapon of precision, but when you need to form a rock-solid defense upon a strategic point, the sustainable might of the RPK will help retain every inch of soil, repel invaders ...and onward, to victory!

Ironically, in real life, the RPK-74 is an excellent marksman's rifle because of its longer, heavier barrel and 5.45 round and not so good as a squad automatic weapon because it's prone to overheating.

Old comment but you actually can get rear sights for Kalashnikov rifles that look almost identical to those in game. Whether they were made in the 80's or not idk. They also probably didn't use them any way.

@numan11 Extended mags is one of the few truly useful attachments - sights are nice, but ultimately don't do much. I'm not sure on my loadout for the M60 - I haven't used it extensively. 200 rounds may be overkill!

I love the rpk because of the way the recoil pulls, its very controllable to me, and he runs my exact same class setup (except sometimes I run marathon for run and gun situations)

@dragon166666 Yeah, the LMG loadouts so far could probably be adopted for either weapon. HK21's focus was defence, RPK's was situational awareness. Not sure on Warlord - generally I prefer Sleight of Hand, Steady Aim or Hardened. But will cover some guns with Warlord in the future.

I hate how very few people use this gun. Everyone just overuses the "laser beams' of ARs like the galil, FAMAS, aug, and Commando. I mix things up a bit and use the RPK with the infrared scope, scavenger, hardened, and tac Mask to make a " terrible weapon" loadout, though this weapon is substantially great in my opinion.

@@pepperachu I'll answer your question. The m60 is in a class of its own, so we'll exclude that in the breakdown. I'll do the same for the stoner, as it's fire rate would make it best of the other three lmgs if it wasn't for the recoil and larger crosshairs. The rpk and the hk 21 are exceptionally identical. The rpk however, has more ammo in each magazine both stock AND with extended mags. So obviously, the rpk wins right? That would be true, if it wasn't for the recoil. Here's a simplified version: In its own seperate category* M60 = most damage The three duplicates, same damage profiles* Stoner 63 = highest fire rate and therefore raw power, balanced by the worst recoil and big crosshairs* Hk 21 = most controllable, but outclassed in fire rate and capacity* Rpk = largest capacity beetween the three mag fed lmgs, balanced by more difficult recoil*

Lazy design for black ops shows through here. The RPK is identical to the HK21 in almost every single way with the same raise/drop, recoil, damage etc. , except it has higher recoil and 10 more bullets a mag. The two may as well be copy-pastes.

i love your work i like to use the rpk in objective based game especially in defense i run a similar set up rpk+extended mag semtex/smoke/motion sensor but i prefer different perks-flak jacket/hardened/hacker good job on the info,i am a big fans of soviet/russian weapons and their history and really appreciate the work you put in

The RPK was typically supplied with 40-round mags and the RPK-74 with 45-round mags. 75-round drums had too many problems to justify regular use. There was an experimental "pan" drum for the RPK-74 that had perpendicular helical feed. Kinda like an extra-deep Lewis Gun drum except the Lewis Gun was top-fed. *Edit/Note:* The "Western spy" peep sight is an improvement over the standard leaf.

The iron sights in game are "tank" sights, which is compatible with the RPK. Most models do not come stock with this.

As a person who's used the RPK a lot here's 2 ways on how to control the recoil easier 1. Burst fire (Good for new people using it but not good for sustained auto fire) 2. Red dot sight (The best if you want more recoil control without burst firing, combine it with Drum mag and Scavenger Pro for a great defensive class also the red dot is the best type of red dot in the game)

I just recently tried it with lower kill streaks and to be blunt, it really can play a good counter sniper role as most of my kills came from long range. It's only a matter of taming the bursts and not using it like it's an assault rifle/SMG. Most of Xboxahoy's hardline weapons are usually the guns more suited to long-range fire support such as M14, G11 and this. You're not going to run around the map with it, you're sticking behind the lines with your team.

@An1malM0ther that is more of a 'stay back and pick the enemies off from a distance' class. Because of the RPK's large recoil, it doesn't really work that well for this. So the class set up he is suggesting is a more mobile class that focuses on keeping awareness.
