In this episode, The Opinionated Quilter shows you how to plan and construct two Boston commons quilts from the same strip set. She also shows another example of when it makes sense to change up a patterns instructions.

I really liked this episode! Boston commons math seems doable. You look well rested too.

I found your comments on patterns with "unnecessary" cuts in the design very interesting. While you mentioned a pattern with a raccoon in the video, it brought to mind the currently popular "Charm Pack Challenge". While that pattern is designed to use a charm pack, if I were to do it again and use yardage or scraps cut in sizes other than 5-inch charms, I would definitely do it differently, instead of piecing together 36 half square triangles and 28 squares. It could be more easily constructed using a lot of flying geese thus eliminating quite a few seams between 2 half-square triangles, plus using some 4.5 x 8.5 rectangles instead of sewing together 2 4.5 inch squares of the same color.

That is exactly what I talk about often. I almost always change pattern instructions for better use of fabric.

Very interesting piecing Maureen. These quilts would take a great deal of concentration, but well worth completing.

Just a little concentration. Once you get going the repetition makes it a breeze.

I never thought of making a Boston Commons. It's beautiful! It may go on my list. Got to get back on the baby quilt train. Two baby quilts need to go out this week. That will leave me with 1 little boy quilt on the shelf. Today's job will be painting some Dandelion Wishes for the cards to go with the baby quilts.

Good explanation - thanks! I'm interested in trying this one with some 2.5" strips - but making the colors more like a bargello - blending together instead of in stark contrast like yours.

I just did the math for a baby size quilt and the equation seems to work perfectly. Im still confused as to why I would have 2 quilts if I use the pieces for the other side of the quilt. I guess I will find out! Thank You for the video. Most tutorials don't orient the squares like this so thank you for teaching how to make a true Boston Common Quilt.

I believe a Trip Around the World is basically the same but the squares are not on point.
@theopinionatedquilter

That is exactly how I would answer that. They are the same except Trip Around the World is set straight and the Boston Commons is on point. I have made several Trip Around the World quilt because I love strip piecing.

Thanks so much for clarifying some of the issues we can have with directions. That's why I hesitate to make certain quilts because I feel if I don't follow the directions, I'll fail.

Sometimes you might make a sample block with scraps. I have even been know to make a paper version because I don't want to waste good fabric. And btw it's not a fail, it is a learning experience that can become a better quilt design.

The width on both are 68". One has more center strips so one is 74" long and one is 79 1/2" long.

Could you please opine on just what size is a lap quillt, or a quilt for a veteran? How big should a quilt be for a 6ft2" man, somebody in a wheel chair, or a twin bed? Sources never agree. Nobody mentions sizes. Is there a ratio between width and length? TIA

A question about the math: if I use this 2-for-1 method, does it always result in a 5:3 reduction?
