Had a player like the Cleric. Not the mysterious part, but the refusal to do anything but attack. Wouldn't cast healing spells, refused to turn Undead, no buff spells. They were an Elf, so they made a single long bow attack every turn. And, if an enemy tried to engage them in melee, the Cleric ran away. Two conversations, and a near TPK later, the player finally changed their behavior and attitude.

By definition, everything any character ever does is what that character would do. 'It's what my character would do' is a tautology. The question is *WHY* the character would do the thing.

The "I don't want to join the party" thing has been done in fantasy fiction before. In the Avatar trilogy (Forgotten Realms book series from the late 80s), Cyric didn't want to join Midnight, Kelemvor, and Adon but found a good reason to do so. You can be conflicted about it and still participate, and the character in the first story didn't seem to understand that.

It is entirely possible to have food intolerance or allergies without knowing... I only just found out I had celiac myself. Or maybe it wasn't the Pizza at all. They could have just gotten randomly sick.
