One thing you missed that I use all the time. Calendar integration. I used Apple shared calendar with my wife to keep track of all the kid's activities. One of the things I do I a set reminder for them and I always add the address of the event and an alarm to alert me when it is time for me to leave from my current location and 30 minutes before. Then when I get in my car it always has the calender reminders location as a suggestion. It already has the best route for me to take with traffic info so it routes me around bad traffic. Also, if I am in the car when the calendar reminder comes up it also has maps in the reminder so it will take me right to maps and start taking me the fastest way to the event. Works well.

I recently put in a Pioneer Nex2330 carplay head unit in my 02 Honda Accord. It also freezes up while loading up in Car play with my Iphone 6 + occasionally. It is amazing how a modern Car stereo makes your daily commute to work a lot more fun. Bluetooh alone is worth it. I'm glad I upgraded my old Honda car stereo head unit to my Pioneer.

Good tips. I always wait for the HU to come up before I plug in my iPhone. And I use one of those magnetic cables which beats fiddling to plug in the regular lightning jack. Especially when driving. Use the magnetic cable at home to.

I did some research and the freezes on my CarPlay was due to my VPN on my iPhone switching between networks. Once I deactivated the VPN, it never gave me an issue again.

The freeze ups are somewhat common. Happens in my 2016 Volt once in a while, and it did in my old car with a Pioneer head unit. In both instances, I need to turn the car off completely to get CarPlay to work again. Wireless CarPlay is the way to go if you can get a car or head unit with the feature.

Yes it does start constantly automatically play the first song from the library. I was writing to apple multiple times and I am switching to Spotify for this. Bug is not in car play but in the music app and Bluetooth management.

The Sygic GPS Navigation app is by far the world's finest navigation. It has the most stunningly beautiful views of the skies, mountains, and meticulously-crafted 3D buildings. It makes every other navigation product look insanely ugly and boring beyond belief. I have been an Android supporter my entire life, however, for the very first time ever, I will actually consider switching to Apple, for only one reason. AndroidAuto does not and will not support the compatibility of the Sygic GPS Navigation app. However, CarPlay does!!! I have only one question for you. Can you still use your iPhone to do other activities while the CarPlay's navigation is simultaneously running on your car's stereo screen? For instance, can you use the Uber app on your phone while simultaneously allowing the CarPlay's navigation display on your car's stereo screen by default as a form of eyecandy? Furthermore, can your car's stereo play the radio in the background while simultaneously displaying the CarPlay's navigation on your car's stereo screen?

Great info here Chris. I’ve not really gotten into Siri Shortcuts, I need to. Here’s a trick I stumbled into. When playing a podcast on CarPlay (or on my Kia in the native app too) the controls as normal, appear on your Apple Watch. This makes it east to skip commercials or back track. You don’t have to wait to until Siri reads your sms back to you before sending it. As soon as Siri starts reading it back to you just activate Siri again and say send and the message will be sent without reading the entire message

How do I get Google Maps to show the altitude? I live in Switzerland near the mountains and normal sat navs show how meters above sea level you are. This is useful to know when you are driving up a mountain pass etc

After our 2016 Hyundai Sonata PHEV (which had CarPlay) was bought back as a Lemon (Jan '18), we searched for a replacement. My wife insisted on CarPlay, so Toyota was out. We bought a '18 Accord 1.5T Touring. She loves it. She uses CarPlay for her work to stay in touch and informed about texts and emails... Our other car also has CarPlay (Volvo S90)

Thanks for the video. Have a 2017 Escape and no freezing on the Car Play side but after a year or so Ford Sync got all messed up. Finally took the time to reset Sync system and has been working fine. Still have issue of Music auto playing which I hate but occasionally a cool random mix comes up. One annoying feature with Apple Maps in Car Play is when opening the app it defaults to directions to get home...any way to turn this off and just give (I dunno...) the Map of where I am at??

Well i have a 2019 hyundai elantra with carplay (apple) and i us waze n need no short cuts to access, nor have a i had freezes, makes sense to wait, i always plug in n wait about 30 seconds before using any features, mine continues to play from the last song i left of, ... this video is pretty cool, and hey the watch thing is amazing, ... yeah i wish there was more options for apps thou, i would say thats the only downside ive found to carplay that its limited to what it can n cant do, unlike ur phone were its a world of apps ... hopefully it gets improved in the future....

I've had occasional lock ups on my pioneer AVIC-8100NEX. When it happens, I just unplug my iPhone, let the stereo get back to another screen, then plug the iPhone back in.

I drive a 2018 Honda Accord Touring 1.0 Turbo. Honda issued a recall late last year which addressed the rear camera cutting off while the car was in reverse, it included a complete re-install of the infotainment system firmware which also fixed the HUD (heads up display) where the compass and other navigation graphics would vanish for weeks. That firmware update also seemed to reduce the CarPlay freezing down to a minimum of 1-2 times per day unlike when I first bought the car and it happened 6-7 times per day. Note: When I say freezing I'm referring to when music is playing in CarPlay - (Apple Music, Pandora, Spotify, Amazon Music, or others) then a few minutes into the track the audio stops but the elapsed time is still ticking away on the screen. I have to press PAUSE, wait a few seconds then press PLAY to continue the music.

Great stuff! In this day and age, lack of CarPlay is definitely a deal-breaker for me (or Android if that was my platform). FWIW, my first and only experience with CarPlay has been in a Hyundai Sonata and I have never had it freeze once. Didn't even know that was a problem out there.And I've used it hundreds of times. SO, maybe it is a manufacturer thing, but I don't know. Also, my CarPlay DOES play the next "alphabetical" song or some random song, and it drives me crazy. I wish someone makes a Carplay navigationapp that (besides navigation) shows a live map where you can personalize gadgets to place on screen. like weather, current speed, trafficsituations, clock/timer. and instead of showing an arrow representing "you" it lets the user to change it to different cars in different colours to get the feeling of having your own car as the "arrow". I installled a JVC CarPlay head unit in my 2011 GTI. i also have freezing with carplay using my iPhone XS Max but it restarts. when I drive a 2018 Pilot sometimes cant get Carplay to launch or show up.I'm guessing its a honda headunit problem.

I have used an aftermarket Pioneer unit in my Smart Car for years. Never had a freeze up or a glitch. So prob your car manufactures fault.

Excellent review! Helped me solidify my decision. I was going to avoid getting the higher trim level passport with the Nav due to the CarPlay. I’m fairly new to apple and was concerned if the experience I’ve had with the phone would translate to CarPlay. The phone is glitchy and unresponsive at times (iPhone X). Any chance you have reviewed android auto? If it doesn’t freeze as much as CarPlay (I’m assuming it does from some of the comments) I’d be more than willing to change back to Android. I’d just like to see your take on it.

My Chevy Equinox came with CarPlay and I like it so much I added Pioneer CarPlay to the wife's 2012 Dodge Caliber and My 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 both are wireless not like the Equinox. MY issue is the Chevy had a app for weather on the LTE plan (which I declined to use as I already have a excellent phone) and I wish that apple would make a dedicated weather app for CarPlay.

What does that waze shortcut thing do? I can get directions in waze using siri without any short cut. I just ask siri "get directions to (whereever) using waze (or google maps)" and it works fine.

I have found in ALL of our Honda's '16 Civic & Accord and '17 Ridgeline - that a "generic" Apple cord would often not allow the system to boot up right away, and we would need to restart the vehicle to get Apple Play to work. This was ALL SOLVED by switching to a Apple certified USB cord-works all the time now. I was told that Apple usb cords have a "chip" that helps with the connection. I can't confirm if there is a chip, but I can tell you since switching to Apple USB cords we have not had a single problem connecting to the Infotainment system.

Thanks for the great vid Chris. I installed an iPad Mini in the dash of my 2011 Silverado since CP was not available on aftermarket head units when I got my truck. It has by far been the most useful mod I have ever done to any vehicle I have ever owned $ for $. I find it so useful even almost 4 years later. It gets hot where I live in the summer so I just put a sun screen in the front windshield and crack my side window to keep the heat inside the truck at a minimum which is a great idea to do with any vehicle anyway to preserve the interior from excessive heat and to keep the sun from fading the interior and damaging the dash etc. Of course my iPad Mini 2 is getting "long in the tooth" now but the slight lagginess it experiences now is at an acceptable level for me at this point considering all of the advantages having the iPad Mini in my dash affords and I would imagine an older head unit would not be much different considering the iPad is way more powerful than most head units from the same timeframe. Carplay works really well in my 2016 Mustang...I had to change the USB module in the car which took no tools and was only $40. No problems, no freezing and the UI for Ford's AC controls show up over the carplay display without issue.

ANY car older than two years would hugely benefit from a headunit upgrade featuring (wireless) CarPlay AND a built-in DSP. I upgraded to a new Pioneer top tier unit for my 2012 vehicle and it has helped the factory Bose system reach heights I never dreamed of. We are talking competition level performance. DSPs are worth EVERY penny.

Those CarPlay usb dongles won’t work with most factory head units. They require an Android headunit.

Alain Guerra each vendor of a CarPlay receiver will leave an app that says the car’s name or the radio manufacturer, like Pioneer. On the home screen. Open that app and you’ll be able to click on the radio, and use the touch screen to so it.

I have a 2018 Passat. I have to do a hard-reset at least once a week by holding down the power button until the radio resets. It just stops wanting to connect. Sometimes it just up and quits while listening. For a while, almost every time I plugged in, after about a minute it would suddenly drop the audio and buzz loudly. The only things I have found that help are: Uninstall ALL VPN software, including the Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 app. That seemed to fix the buzzing. Second: Turn off Blutooth. That seems to help a lot with failure to connect and random dropouts. But even with that, i still need to do the hard reset occasionally.

I have carplay on my new Toyota Avalon and it does have glitches every once and a while. I don't touch it when it does that, I just let it fix itself.

You can used google maps in CarPlay, I used it in my 2018 Honda Accord sport. They release the update a few months ago. Now I haven’t had any freezes or problem with CarPlay. Now the only thing that I don’t like is that if I’m in using the maps and it appears in CarPlay. If you go to your phone and go to Apple Music it takes the navigation off the car screen. I understand it mirrors your phone. But that the only thing that I don’t like.

Android Auto doesn't do that and let's you use your phone as you please while still retaining what's on the screen. I have both and Google maps on iOS is like using a whole new app altogether while on Android Auto it's like using it on your phone. Basically Android Auto let's you multi-task while iOS doesn't doesn't at all. Carplay does run at a higher resolution though kinda like 720p vs 480p on Android Auto.

Are you able to take an incoming call while using Google maps on carplay? Or does the call screen completely block the map until you hangup the phone?

I wish there was a youtube carplay app where you could listen to a youtube video while u drive because sometimes id like to listen to a review/ diy video while driving

I like using Waze in my F-150. Haven’t experienced freeze ups. Did you post the Waze shortcut? I wish Apple would allow 3rd party navigation apps like Waze to use the tapping feature on the Apple Watch.
