Thank you! I didn't know before, that the conversion of Chromate into Dichromate even works well with a weak acid like Acetic Acid, which is much more easier to get rid-off than Sulphuric Acid.

It depends of the temperature you hit the mix. If you heat further, KNO2 can be reduced to K2O or decomposed.

Very nice demo! Are there other acids that can work for this purpose in place of acetic acid?
@Shivachemist4 жыл бұрын
Most common acids will work. Acids such as Oxalic acid, Hydrobromic acid, Hypophosphorous acid should not be used for dichromate conversion as these acids are reducing agents. To prepare a pure dichromate salt, the corresponding acid should be used. Chromium trioxide (anhydride of chromic acid) in this case. Having said that, it is okay to use other acids for aqueous chemistry of Chromium.

Hi, i have a question: which was the final yield of the potassium dichromate, cuz a synthesis i attempted following a similar technique gave out i think ~20% of the theoretical yield, the potassium chromite had formed in the cup which didnt oxidise till 6valent chromium

This is certainly a handy way to prepare potassium (bi)chromate in the countries in which, like Europe, 30% hydrogen peroxide trade is restricted. However, I'd be also interested in collecting the resulting KNO₂ which is a nice reducing agent. What happened to it? It stayed in solution? Isn't your final product contaminated with it?
@monokeras80504 жыл бұрын
@@vibzzlab Nice! I’m interested in KNO₂, if only to synthesise diazonium compounds (like you did!) Also, TBH, I’m a bit concerned with the way you put those strong oxidisers over paper towel to dry them. CrO₃ is usually considered unsafe to filter using gravity filtration because it would oxidise paper filter. I don’t think any Cr (VI) compounds are really safe to handle with paper, I would use a Buchner funnel here, really.

HCL cannot be used because dichromate is strong oxidising agent it will liberate chlorine if HCL is too concentrated....... Dilute Acetic acid being weak acid wouldn't lower the pH enough so as to convert chromate into dichromate hence best option is either glacial acetic acid or sulphuric acid....... Equilibrium between chromate and dichromate depends on pH as per lechateliers principle equilibrium would be driven to dichromate side at higher Hydrogen ion conc or lower pH

Hey awesome vid ! was wondering does any type of acid work on the chromate to di process ? say for instance i use citric acid which is the only one i have lying around ... And also is that step reversible making chromate from the di by using Pot Hydroxide or soduim hydroxide Also for saftey around heating the mixed chromuim nitrate and hydrox , does it produce toxic gases ? Thanks
@teresashinkansen9402 Жыл бұрын
I don't have enough knowledge so I might be wrong but i think the purpose of using the acetic acid is that it will evaporate and not leave any leftovers meanwhile citric acid will end up in the final product.
