GREAT job!! We are prepping for a kitchen renovation and the usual granite, quartz, etc. is crazy expensive. This looks like a wonderful, cost-effective option. Q: Are you pleased with the level of gloss on the finish? Is there an additive to make it even glossier? Thank you for the post!! 😎👍
@MakerGray2 күн бұрын
Very pleased! And I don't know of an additive, but the company is worth checking out. I bet they could answer that with a phone call. Thanks so much!

Instead of adding more water which makes the concrete less strong instead add a plasticizer powder in a very small amount to make it flow and extend working time. I make a concrete candle vessels in my business and it really makes a difference especially in projects that have a lot of detail. Please like this comment so other newbies get this tip first!

Do you have a link for that sink? A sink that goes all the way back to the wall seems key to making this job even easier for my kitchen. You did an amazing job!
@MakerGray21 күн бұрын
Shoot, I unfortunately don't. This sink was here when we bought the house. But search for a white overmount farm sink and you'll find lots that are similar. Here is one! rstyle.me/+ylbE14vdpx1EkqJomAAuvA And thanks!!

No magnesium float, and stainless float? Amazing
@fibbsjc9 күн бұрын
Do you have a multitool/oscillating tool? If you attach a thin piece of PVC or dowel to a worn out blade you can use that as a vibrator for the cement that’s closer to an actual stinger used in concrete pours. That way you can actually insert the vibrating rod into the cement itself prior to screeding it to ensure no bubbles. Since it’s cement and not concrete you don’t have to worry about hitting it too long and causing separation of the cement and aggregate.
@MakerGray9 күн бұрын
That’s a great idea! I’ll definitely do that next time. Thanks so much!

Awesome video! I never thought you can make white concrete.! Beautiful! The only question I have is why not building forms right on top of your cabinets and pouring monolithic countertop on the spot?
@MakerGray2 ай бұрын
Good question! I love the idea of pour in place concrete, and in some ways, prefer it. But decided against it for this build because I wanted to keep the kitchen in use during the project and keep the mess/dust to a minimum. This kitchen also has 4 very simple shaped counters which made pre cast very easy. If my counters had been bigger or integrated with the sink, I would have definitely done pour in place. Thanks so much!

What saw blades are you using? My melamine always chips like crazy
@MakerGray18 күн бұрын
I should have used a melamine specific blade but I experimented with my general purpose blade on my track saw and went with it. There was a lot of chip out on the top but the bottom was flawless, so I just placed the tops down when I cut and no chip out at all. I used foam under my boards as I cut so having a backer might have helped? Thanks!

I like them! Did you screw the countertops down, glue them, or do they just stay on place from being heavy?
@MakerGray2 ай бұрын
Good question! They are heavy enough that once set in place, they don't move at all. Especially after the silicone caulk is added. But construction adhesive can be added underneath if you feel it's necessary. Thanks so much!

what about staining and scrates? Are these as tuff as granite?
@MakerGrayАй бұрын
So far, the finish I used has been super tough, durable and stain free

The wood countertop was not ugly at all but the white is nicer
@MakerGrayАй бұрын
Agreed :)
@taylortisaac4 күн бұрын
Definitely wasn’t ugly, but it does make a kitchen look less neat and clean and more dirty and maybe even a little dated. Butcher black has its place, but these white concrete tops are definitely way better for her kitchen.
@jewdd19892 ай бұрын
Last fall I did my own small vanity in white concrete mix from z countertop or same one you used. Sadly you can mildly see the black mesh through the white even though I was careful to center it when pouring and I used a decent amount of white pigment. Definitely use a form, much better results than pouring in place. Also make sure you make a template against walls because that makes a huge difference if it fits or not, and remember to flip the template over! My one big issue with concrete now though after over a year is the staining. I used the Chengs formula which you do layer after layer and it soaks in but it hasn’t lasted well and now I have staining. If you find out how to prevent or fix it I’d love to know
@MakerGray2 ай бұрын
Ah I'm sorry to hear this. Great info, especially about the template! I hear great things about the sealer I used. So far, even red wine hasn't phased it and the reviews are great 🤞 I wonder if it would be possible to lightly sand/grind out the stains on your counter?
