Plants like Sarracenia and Flytraps generally don’t do well indoors because they like full sun, good airflow and access to lots of bugs. You can grow indoors but you’ll need a grow light and to supplementally feed the plants. You will still need to provide a chilly winter dormancy as well

Any ideas on why a clay pot is not good? It would seem like if it was kept standing in a little water, it would be fine. Do they just tend to draw salts to them and create problems that way? Trying to learn about that point.

Question about dormancy. I live in west central Florida. Tampa Bay Area I’ve just started with carnivorous plants, and I’m wondering if our Florida “winter” is cool enough, and long enough? The coolest it gets is 36 degrees at most. And only for a short time. From December to mid February it’s around the 40’s and low 50’s at night. Thx!

Would like to see the tray that pot goes in. Have thought of putting all my plants together in one pot but wasn’t sure how to keep them watered. Would need to be a big tray but how deep is it? The other thing I wonder about is after a couple years do you have to change all that soil to new stuff?
@California_Carnivores

It's a good idea to change the soil out every three-five years. I use a 3" deep saucer from a floral store for this pot.
@MsGuyu

@@California_Carnivores What do you do with the "old" soil? I've seen people using it again when repotting in some part. Do you recommend to use some parts of it again or put new soil all over?
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores 3 жыл бұрын
@@MsGuyu I don’t recommend using the old soil. We have other landscapers/nurseries that come and take our old soil and mix it with their soils. For carnivorous plants, the soil builds up minerals and salts or starts to breakdown and these things will make your plant do poorly so you don’t want to reintroduce the old material back into the pot.

I am thinking of getting a mini bog garden kit from you guys, the 3 plant one, and I was wondering would it thrive in the southern San Joaquin valley? It gets very hot summers, typically surpassing 100 Mid June - Early September with nights in the 70s and chilly winters of temps in the upper 50s and lower 60s and 40s and 30s at nighttime Late December - Early March. Will they be able to go dormant and survive the extreme heat and very mild winter? I know it’s a bunch of questions but I really want a bog lol!
@California_Carnivores

It should do well! The plants won’t mind the cold at all because they are dormant in winter. Your summers are probably a bit more intense then ours, up here in Sonoma County zone 9b. So you’ll want to put them where they get full morning sun but protection from the afternoon intensity during the height of summer. And make sure the saucer always has lots of water!

We are in zone 9b. Without a winter that drops into the 50’s F at night, you’ll need to do something for your temperate plants to trigger dormancy. You could pot all of those up into a really nice, big outdoor bog. They won’t do as well in a terrarium indoors because they want full sun, good air flow and tons of insects. Thank you 😊 In your area I would grow the plants in full morning sun with a little afternoon sun but a bit of protection from the full brunt of the afternoon sun. Or put a little shade cloth over them. Keep them well watered but because it’s so humid, you can let the tray only be filled to 1/4” and even let it dry out overnight. Flytraps can be grown outdoors but will definitely burn in the intense sun and will want that lower water level. I hope that helps!

Can they live in just spagmoss?
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores 4 жыл бұрын
They can but it can be harder to grow them in that depending on your climate. Some people have great luck growing flytraps in pure long fibered sphagnum moss. In our experience these plants do best in four parts peat moss and one part perlite.

We sell lots of individual Sarracenia and flytraps but not necessarily all of the individual plants in this video, all the time. The stock changes a lot.

So are all carnivorous plants considered bog plants?
@ericbarr5434
@ericbarr5434 4 жыл бұрын
No, some are tropical, some are underwater, they are very diverse but I think the easiest ones to grow are the bog ones.

@@ericbarr5434 that's great information thank you for that! I love Aquariums so the next best thing for me is ponds or bogs. I'm novice with the bog scene but I feel I could get it figured out. Any info I can get will is much appreciated. I did love your video keep it up you have great energy!
