Making An Electronic Safe Manual | Replacing A Keypad With A Dial

Today, Guardian Safe & Lock had a customer purchase a Hollon FB-685E Oyster series safe that presented us with a unique video opportunity: Making an electronic safe manual!
After a standard shift, Uriah got to record the process of removing an electronic keypad lock from a safe and mounting a new mechanical combination dial. Manual dials have many complex and moving parts inside of the lock pack, and a lot of variables must be accounted for to ensure the proper functioning of the safe after swapping over to one.
This safe presented an additional challenge: The original electronic keypad's mounting was not centered, making for a few extra steps necessary to mount the manual dial correctly.

Thanks for the upload. I bought an esafe because it was on sale at a good price but wanted a mechanical system . I may try this but kinda afraid if I screw it up, I may have to put a latch with a combination lock. 😀

Was the hole in the back cover panel so that you can change the combination without having to take the plate off? Perhaps you could do a video of changing the combination next time. Good video.

Was that a zinc lever in the lock assembly (as opposed to a brass one)? I've heard that zinc has looser tolerances.

Not too big of a deal but i thought the spline key goes with the lever or foot pointing towards the outer side and not over the shaft? Im not sure if it matters but i just thought my S&G said it that way. Either way, good video.

Is there a certain mechanical or dial that you suggest for replacing a Securam on a Safari/Cannon safe?

Sometimes the keypads and dials are proprietary to the safe especially when getting budget friendly safes. Cannon is known for skimping on quality of keypads, but sometimes they are normal and can be swapped out with any other. I’d check with a local locksmith first but if you want to use a regular dial I’d go with Sargent and Greenleaf they are the best. Thx for watching! Dude I have a Winchester safe that the number 2 on the key pad is messed up and won't let me in even tho I have the right combo what do I do. I've had the safe for like 10 years and don't have the receipt what do I do

Replace the keypad. Most come off from the outside and have a wire that unplugs from the KP, You can replace it with the door locked.

Usually the spline key arm faces outwards

@@GuardianSafeAndLock Interesting, with Sergeant & Greenleaf 6000 and 8000 series locks, the manual states to have the back of the spline key point outwards. What type of lock were you installing?

diverdoug2 Hey Doug before I responded to you yesterday I called two other Safe technicians and asked that question, both with over 20 years experience and me with over 15 years experience and they all said point inward and so did I. But, I did my due diligence and looked up what you were saying and you are correct, it says over the cam and not over the spindle which is news to all three of us lol. Well I guess it really doesn’t matter bc none of us have ever had an issue but technically it does say that, guess you learn something everyday lol. - Uriah

Will this work on a cannon safe? The key pads on cannon safes are worthless. Cannon safes and customer service is trash.

Lol that’s what we’ve heard..... sometimes the locks on cannon safes are proprietary but sometimes there not. It’s best to get a locksmith out and let him have a look at it.
