Making Continuous Bias Tape with Whipstitch

Extended demonstration for making continuous bias tape using a single fat quarter of quilt-weight cotton. This bias tape will be applied to an armhole opening on a sleeveless dress to finish the raw edge.

Your demonstration is awesome! No one else describes the need for positioning the fabric correctly. You start right out with selvage/grain vs. cross-grain. I was working with a batik fabric so had an awful time figuring out the wrong side. I really needed your details. THANK YOU!

You're an exact teacher! This demo was very easy to follow. I'll add that am easy way to store bias tape is by winding it an empty toilet paper roll. You can flatten the tube to save space but you'll get more creases. You can even cut the roll in half across the middle to store two different tapes.

While I am also an MC Escher fan, I would prefer hearing exactly how much bias strip you got from what length of fabric. Also, in another video on the same topic, all information was given & included a formula for figuring out in advance how much bias binding will be needed for the project. In general, I liked how your video explained the concept of bias, why it's bias...all of that will help most people & is key. I feel you did very well, did it very clearly & your voice is pleasant, easy to hear & without outside noise- very nicely done.

You can find a chart from Dritz here that will show you how many linear inches of bias tape you get per yard of fabric used: www.dritz.com/sites/default/files/tutorials/dritz-tutorial-how-many-yards-bias-strips-will-your-fabric-produce.pdf I don't generally make an exact amount of bias tape, as I keep lots on hand for various projects and don't mind if I make extra, but the chart is printable and a great resource if you're buying yardage specifically to make bias tape from!

Linda Beebe They do, but she actually REPEATS it since many don't "hear" that information, and it is usually because they don't use the word "offset" snd show it more than one time. Listen to another tutorial and you will realize what I am saying, but that's why we like this explanation so much!! 😊😍

This is the best demo I have seen on making a continuous bias strip it is using only two seams sewn before cutting the strips which eliminate all the sewing of the short seams that are so hard to do and keep even being since they are at an angle.

I have tried doing this by watching a different video and ended up with a total mess! I loved this video because she took the time and made it very plain what she was doing. Great video! Clear, concise and entertaining as all get out. I recently tried the continuous bias method using the video by McCall's pattern editor. Seemed simple enough, but I got lost in the process very quickly. I most definitely will try again using these instructions. I am so happy that I came across this tutorial. Even though I'm an experienced sewist, I'm going to use newbeequilter's comment below. Drawing that extra 1/4-inch line is just so much more accurate. (Yes, my OCD for perfection is showing! 😐) But truthfully you don't need to be that accurate, you'll just cut the dogleg at the seem like she showed in the video and it works out because it's bias! Like magic! Who ever thought of this method deserves a Nobel Prize! ❤🌅🌵

Wonderful explanation. I always wound up with the lines not matching....since I'm poor at math I thought it was me! I would cut them crooked to match....what a mess! I'd make it work but not satisfied. Now.....now I can be satisfied! Thanks for clearing up the mystery and giving me my confidence back!

For marking cut lines I save my expensive markers and use a plain writing pencil. It doesn't bleed and will wash out. I also like Crayola fine tip washable markers... (really any children's or school marker will work) because they are made to wash out. The markers also glide across the fabric without pulling. They come in various colors and are very inexpensive... usually a whole pack of washable markers for one fancy marker from the fabric store. And if you make cookies, your child might let your use one of theirs... so free! These last pretty well (unlike chalk that might brush away). (When I say "wash" I don't mean dab with water... it has to be fully saturated, a good rinse maybe a better term because I don't think you have to use soap.) The truth is that any marking instrument will work (as long as it doesn't bleed will do the trick here as you are marking the cutting line... and if it left a stain, the stain would be hidden within the seem allowance. 💖🌞🌵😷

Great tutorial for learning how to make yards of continuous bias binding in minutes. Once you get learn how to do this, you will never buy those expensive packages again that only come in limited solid colors. Make lots of bias binding in various fabrics and have fun with stripes, florals, and geometric shapes!

Deborah, when I first started your MMQ2022, after attempting one 2019 or so, I decided to look at everything that might help me. I always consider myself beginner even though I have been tinkering with quilting for about 5 years or so. The first video being this one, I thought to myself, ah, I don't need it... others tell me that the bias isn't necessary. OK... I decided to try it. YIKES! Great info... I guess when I get to the pathway for the calendar, I will have to do it... It looks extremely challenging to me... but I am here to learn. Looking forward to learning from the rest of your tutorials... I may be VERY late attempting to solve the 2022 murder. I never even made it to the crime scene in 2019's!
