Great video. I've been upping the frequency for years and I've noticed that despite being 37 with some elbow/back/knee issues I'm making more progress then I ever did when I was a younger man with the bro split. I enjoy the pull/push splits the most. Good for people with back issues that can't train too much volume on spine loading exercises.

Hey John im 45 & just started back after 20 year break. I started training like i did in my youth, heavy & each body part 1x a week but i was never sore even a little bit so i started higher reps with lighter weight & each body part 2x a week & some times morning & night per body part 2x a week & im growing like i did in my 20's. I could not understand it but im glad i listened to my body. So your definitely on to something big here

John, i believe your success, is from you not willing to just accept ANYTHING BUT THE BEST VERSION OF YOU !! Too many people just say fuck it and blame shortcomings on genetics etc. You simply would NOT GIVE UP ! No secret recipe ! Keep learning , keep evolving, and the intra workout is HUGE ! But if your not putting in years of work , not simply going through the motions, but actually having excitement in what your doing NOTHING will help ! Look around the gyms, the same people for years , looking THE SAME ( shitty )... Drugs/ no drugs . Get bloodwork also. Super important as you've stated in other videos, get your hormones in balance ! Everyone of my friends and I , were out of wack ! Im 49 and this years gains have been Crazy ! Feel 25 AGAIN !!! No b.s. thank you for the great videos ! P.s. i want to give your Recovery Factor a shot :)

I have been using your combo as mentioned in this video (hydrolized kassein and cluster dextrin ) for 3 monthes , learned about this in one of your former videos , surely it works , got a lot of nice backfeat lately due to my progress , i am 51 years old , surely it improved my abillity to recover , but also my energy during workouts , do can work much harder without crashing and its also to mention that this combo dosent spike the insulin balance and much much less soreness , didnt had the same results at all with the usual glycose - maltodextrin combi , i am very thankfull about your advice , i do can state that its superb as intra carb source . 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

How did you take those? I’m thinking about trying it. I’m 47
@boboman676 жыл бұрын
edgar alanh lalata Hi Edgar I take these intra workout (during the training in my drink bottle) sipping inbetween sets . 30 grams of cluster dextrin 15 grams of hydrolized kassein I buy both by bulkpowders (UK) the kassein they call peptopro . I have tried a lot of supps during my 6 years of training its very few that i felt remarkable results with , this combo works great (especially because i pass 45 min workout time, i am doing rather 1 1/2- 2 hour sessions , where its beneficial with the instant carbs , but as said , the less soreness and better recovery is also to fell . Else i use creatine and beta-alanine in combi too , great strength and unset acid , also works great . The newest supp in my toolbox is laxogenine , even made me recover better and great strength improvement , i was very skeptical when i was recommended this , but the guy who told me about is very pragmatic about supps and their advantages . 50 % of the laxogenine supps on the market are badly underdozed , the hotspot is 100 mg every day , i buy mine from musclerage , its called nattybol , i fell like really wanting to push through with this supp , the power of this supp was to experience after 5 days , laxogenine is a plant steroid to be found in the fastets growing plants (not anabolic , not on the doping list and safe to use ) it creates an enhanced protein synthezis in the muscles . Fell free to drop by and look at my insta gram profile boboman67 By the way i really enjoy the mountaindogs advices , he really knows how to lift like a clever lifter due to his age , especially about supps and joint careness . Its another game to workout in our age than a 18 year old.

This is my experience also. Just about to turn 40. I used to do the whole body once a week. Felt my physique stagnating, even going backwards. Nearly gave up. Now I train my whole body twice every 7 days and my recovery seems fine and I feel I am in the best shape of my life. Lifting since I was 10.

I have a theory that no effort in the gym is ever wasted. If you put in a lot of effort without adequate rest for an extended period, then suddenly correct that you get most of the gains you would have gotten earlier, but now they come later. Plenty of cases of guys overtraining for months, seeing no gains, then go on holiday and suddenly blow up in muscle mass ☺️

@bfry384 жыл бұрын
I workout each body part twice a week. So if I hit arms on Monday I will hit them again on Friday. I give my muscles 2-3 days off before I hit them again. Diet is the key though. 80% nutrition, 10% rest 10% sleep. Best of luck to you!

Ive always found just by chance that when I hit a plateau swapping volume for frequency or visa versa is the key to more growth. where you have to change things up most people never look further than their rep ranges or exercise selection. Im kinda the reverse in that I started back in the 90s doing full body workouts and did such for a few years before i started to get more into bodybuilding and buying the magazines and training at a better gym and only then i learned about 'bro splits' which seemed really alien to me at the time and I couldn't work out how the muscle would grow leaving it so long before hitting it again but i trained using splits for the first time with a training partner who was much bigger and stronger than me so i trusted in them and due to the switch over i made really big gains. I prefer splits as allows me to use more volume per muscle group but I will at times switch to a push pull for freuqncy when i feel my body needs a change

So I believe my training intensity and so are my nutrition and supplementation. I currently hit the legs every 3 days cause it is a weak point and seeing nice gains..The problem is on my last show where I ended 2nd I was ripped but lacking some volume. Not flat but missing the 3D look you are talking about in the vid .not only in the legs but in general. People in their 20s and 30s act like 40 is ancient and is the beginning of the end for fitness, but anyone who's that age or older knows that isn't true. You just have to be smart and careful with how you train and how you eat. You can do just about stupid thing at 20 and probably still make lots of gains and recover fast, whether you're doing anything right or not. Beyond 40 you can't afford to be stupid anymore because those injuries and that inflammation doesn't just disappear overnight.

That was an excellent video my friend as they all are! I am 44 and the biggest I've ever been at probably about 7 or 8% was 242 lb. That was when I was 28 I would like to be in contest shape at 2:25 before I'm 50. I'm doing what you used to I train one time a week each muscle because I can't handle anything more than that honestly I just think my genetics suck. I'm pretty sure if I could just get a year of straight training in like the way I would like to my goal is obtainable. But with what I'm doing right now it's kind of tricky to say the least and I just got into a head-on collision and really screwed up my right leg. So my bodybuilding career is out the window I'm pretty sure but thank you for sharing what you did and breaking it down for us. Hopefully in a year or so I might be able to get back to normal and I might try training each muscle once every 6 days with periodalizatin of course because that's the only way I can do it I'm pretty sure. I'm going to do a pretty strict research study on it with myself I'll let you know the results if it works lol thanks again

John, what’s your take on mentzer style training? Should I lower how many sets I’m doing and forego a bigger pump? I usually go for 12 sets on bis or chest for example and go to failure almost every time with drop sets and techniques to make my reps more intense. I can’t see getting a super intense exercise with fewer sets. Maybe I’m not breaking through to that next level of intensity? How do I completely exhaust myself on fewer sets on upper body exercises like I can with legs which are easy to reach extreme intensity in just a couple sets?

Now I'm trying 4 times per week, upper/lower, upper/lower...maybe I'm not growing every day (consider that MPS is elevated only for 36/48 hours, so I've some "dead days"), but I can push a lot harder and I started to grow again!

+mountaindog1 how was your volume at 2x weekly vs 1x weekly? Did you reduce your weekly sets, double them or something else? Also, was your intra workout recovery strategy especially for a cut or is it equally effective in a cut and bulk (assuming that in a bulk there are already enough carbs in the diet)?

Hey John great stuff. I am 38 and have been doing an upper lower split for a while not a lot of gains. Think my volume may be too high.
