In the concluding half of our investigations into the filming of the Dalek Invasion at Shepperton Studios, we piece together the timeline at the end of production to reveal a desperate scramble to reassemble the set and film some decdent Dalek footage.

Even as a child watching this film I could never understand why the filmmakers felt it was reasonable for the cars to be so old, but it has finally dawned on me. Modern cars are so full of computer technology that they are easily disabled by naughty Dalek hackers, so only old cars without engine/suspension/road-awareness/seat-position/upholstery-colour computer control are of any use in 2150. I guess they raided a car museum for all the antique vehicles. At last I'll be able to sleep easy in my bed...

I am amazed how such a simple flaw like a slightly lower number 2 on a clock or an extra rivet on a Dalek gives people with an incredible eye for detail the opportunity to track props so easily and provide literally hours of interesting behind the scenes information, I really hope you guys have got another series in mind for when this one ends.

Amazing stuff. The revelation that the New york street scene was filmed in Shepperton was scarcely credible and proof we once had a formidable film industry until the 70's. Pity the Chase and a few thereafter never made it to celluloid.

I found it fascinating how the sets were dressed, re-arranged and re-used. Obviously as a cub watching from the beginning, we were enthralled by the plots and monsters/aliens and would have missed such things as repositioned cupboards, meters lights etc. A totally wonderful series from the beginning up to the present time. As for the poor continuity people, in a programme that can go backwards and forwards in time, must have an absolute nightmare, so its hardly surprising there were a few inconsistances, it all adds to the fun.Thankyou for this info.

Excellent video. I love each every episode this great channel is doing and the meticulous detail of each one - this one suddenly became of particular interest to me when I realised that I often stood in the exact spot where the Dalek had famously risen from the Thames in 'Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.'! Two of my favourite things in life are nature photography, and 'backstreet' London history exploring; at this point alone I took a photo of a mother goose sheltering her young a couple of months ago. I often scour various bits of London finding and matching old filming locations (have done quite a few 'Who' ones, as well as everything from 'Avengers' to 'Minder' to 'Grange Hill'), but sniggered to myself that I'd been to such an iconic spot and not actually realised it, despite the research I've put into other such locations. Keep up the good work folks; wonder if at some point you might even venture beyond the pure Dalek content and branch off into vintage Who filming locations.

I absolutely loved this film when I watched it as a kid, the sound of the Dalek spacecraft, just before it appears was spine-tingling. What as always intrigued me is some of the dialogue in the part of the film when the Doctor arrives back at the London underground base, to find it deserted. After discovering the Dalek base of operations, the Doctor works out the safest route. Tracing the shortest route on the map, he declares that they should avoid Bedford, as it is crawling with Daleks. How does he know this? Even if there is a warning on the map, the next question is Why? What is the strategic significance of Bedford? Why are the Daleks patrolling deserted ruins? They have conquered the Earth, why are they wasting their time pottering round in the deserted ruins of towns, instead of concentrating their forces on their base of operations, the mine which is their reason for invading the planet?

The reason this documentary is much more absorbing than most others is that it's unmistakably a labour of love. You could have built more suspense (e.g. the turquoise door) since you're clearly talented sleuths. Subscribed.

Thanks for a great series of video's. As an 11 year old watching the film in the now long demolished Morden Odeon my biggest issue was with the vehicles. They were clearly contemporary with early sixties London. Other than that I loved the film and it was the high light of the school holidays. Later on in my life a similar thing happened when I went to see Quadrophenia, late 1970's cars in a film set in the early 1960's.

Y'know other Doctor Who documentaries would focus on something like the history of the Daleks or how certain eras of the show played out. Never in my life would I imagine I'd not only watch a documentary series on the filming of the Dalek films with trivial info like certain props, but that I'd also be heavily invested! Hard to put a guage on how much, but something like this can't be done without some help from others and they have been credited. With regards to the props in other shows, there is a small like-minded group on twitter that have helped out as it means lots of eyes in lots of different places! But Gav did alot of work into getting dates etc and producing charts to show what order they were used in and therefore who could have supplied them. As for the specific locations work of Shepperton, I would guess that 95% of that was us. Finding out exactly where the street was, or the villa for example was down to us entirely. But again, we had some help is spotting these places in other shows and films. Then the real work is putting it all together and formulating the timeline and changes. The street was fun to do?! And the work on the signs going up during the filming of the Van scene was all us.

Stumbled on these 2 shepperton videos and having seen the 2 dalek films endless times I wondered why I hadn’t seen your videos. Then I noted their release date which was a few weeks ago. I have never been so mesmerised in your documentaries specifically aimed at the 2 films which have been a big part of my like since the mid sixties. The incredible accurate detail (and back up proof) set them apart. You have a real talent here that deserves to be seen to a wider audience. These nostalgic gems are NOT just for nerds on here (me included)- you can see from the high viewing rates that there are a hell of a lot of people out there watching and every comment made is a glowing one to your dedication and attention to detail-made all the more difficult because of the passage of time. Will savour the rest of your you tube output. Well done to all who participated. The big question is -will there be a third documentary on the two films??

Wonderful video! I must admit that I have learned a lot that I was blissfully unaware of regarding a large number of my favourite movies and other productions (not just 'Doctor Who') the 'Oliver' connection surprised me the most and I can't wait to tell my GF about it because 'Oliver' is one of her all time favourite films. I was also surprised (via watching both parts) regarding the fact that this epic movie was filmed in such a small localised area, I already knew that the street scenes were filmed on the back lots (rather than on location as was the BBC version) but it amazed me on the inventiveness on the part of those who worked on the production to reuse so many props and other equipment to represent so many varied parts of London. To be honest I was fooled into believing that they filmed the entire movie over a much larger area, with loads and loads of new sets made from scratch each and every time a new location or setting was needed (I did spot the reuse of some of the props used in the Dalek base were used in other productions though, but I was surprised at how many props were used in productions of which I never in a million years would think would have any kind of connection with each other, barring perhaps actors and writers and the like) and that much of the location work had been done so close to the main studio, I knew that the TV series tended to use locations in or nearby London, but to be honest I actually was fooled into believing that given that the films had larger budgets than the show, that they cast and crew filmed the scenes set in Bedfordshire were filmed in Bedfordshire, or failing that some place somewhat similar, perhaps nearby. All in all, yet another wonderful video thank you for uploading and keep up the good work. Happy Times and Places.

3:43 - The unknown dome seems obvious to me, once you've seen the columns, and know that the Thames is meant to be behind the camera (and another clue being the shot at 3:49 which shows the triangular pediment above the columns.) The building in question is meant to be the National Gallery. The scene is set in the vicinity of Trafalgar Square. Compare with the still at 4:40, the shot looking up Whitehall towards the Square showing the Gallery behind.

Captivating stuff, amazing research and production values. A fantastic series that transports me back to when I was a young lad that thought this film was the best that ever had or would be made. In some ways I wasn't too far wrong. Thank you for doing these.

Hey, this is a really interesting programme and it is nice to know that the same stage was also used for Star Wars (1977), Batman Begins (2005) and so on. I thought that Out of the Unknown was produced by the BBC and NOT ABC! Ah well, as Dr Who still once said, "Can't complain, we live in an imperfect Universe!" Hey, it was also interesting to hear that the child actors in Oliver discovered the film Dalek props - I do hope that they had loads of fun with them at the time.
