@error53ish5 жыл бұрын

@latina17005 жыл бұрын
jeremy spencer well it depends on the hibiscus. The flavors might not turn out as you thought since its being mixed with a different type of substance/ meat/ flower whatever you like to call it lol. But hey why not try it! Certain meats such as lamb I don’t like to put cumin on it, doesn’t taste good, but cumin taste great In salsa. Things like that.
@MrDrSonGoku5 жыл бұрын
I did not think of that, but I was thinking of adding the "not chicken" bouillon cube or two to the water when I rehydrate the peddles and hope it adds a meaty taste to the leaves, then cook it with the seasonings as you said.
@juliejunkyardx5 жыл бұрын
Hibiscus is actually pretty naturally sweet, sour and astringent (in a pleasant way), so the bitter earthiness of "traditional" taco seasoning would not compliment it at all. It's got no umami notes to it that cumin or chili compliment, and adding a faux meat savory element would play on the sour note pretty badly. Simple aromatics, like the garlic and sweet onion, is a better way to go.

Then rinse it again and with fresh water pressure cook it one more time in the instant pot for 20 minutes. It makes it very tender. I then rinse and squeese out the water. I cook it in the skillet with a little oil and a Poblano Mole sauce. It makes the best tacos. Serve it topped with fresh onion, cabbage and cilantro!!

I use hibiscus quite a bit for tea. Just today (a few hours ago) I made a batch of tea that was hibiscus, Chinese hawthorn and cranberry. Also, if you look up hibiscus sepals before they are dried, you can kinda see why they would be "meaty".
@ImdaVP5 жыл бұрын
I haven't watched the video yet, but I looove hibiscus. Also, the part we use isn't actually the petal of the flower, but a "floret", but which is somewhat like a little pod with little petal like bits on the outside. You use those petal bits, since the inside pod is actually very similar to okra and has tons of naturally occurring pectin.

Calyx, IIRC they're right beneath the petals. I normally don't get into 'word-policing' until I read young mother blogs so proud they've saved $ by using petals from their hibiscus bush in the garden to give to their CHILDREN🚫👎 The tea we buy from Mexican markets are calyx (it has a weird spelling for plural, sorry) from the Roselle plant. I've read that more than one decorative garden type of hibiscus are NOT considered safe for consumption! But as long as people use bags purchased at markets, I don't usually bother? So thanks @TheBrink

The reason roselle (aka carcade in African countries) is “meaty” is because it is not the “flower” per se. It is the calyx, a cluster of sepals which texture is much thicker than the petals. You can make hibiscus agua fresca (agua de jamaica) with the red water. Put it in a pitcher with sugar and ice cubes. So refreshing! If it tastes somewhat bitter add more water to dilute and a bit more sugar. You can find this drink at Mexican restaurants. I add about a half a handful of hibiscus flowers to about 3 cups of boiling water plus add sugar to the hot water to help it dissolve. After it boils take it turn off the heat and let it sit for a good ten minutes. Pour the liquid in a pitcher and fill with cold water. Then add ice. You can also add cranberry or apple juice instead of sugar. I as about half hibiscus water and half of juice.
