Get a peek into how I create my Viking hats. It is a multi-step process as I weave and sew these warm wool and linen hats. The tablet weaving is the most detailed part of the process and I show how I do that. Thanks for coming along on this journey of creative discovery!

I would love to know which brands of yarn you like for tablet weaving. I need to weave in wool but have been hesitant about which yarns will take the beating the cards will give it. I don't live somewhere where I can go touch the yarns and examine them for weaving suitability.

I have used a few different brands. Unfortunately many of them are discontinued and hard to find. The ones that have worked best for me are EPiC yarn from Timeless Textiles, La-Mieux, CUM from Denmark. For wool, you are looking for multi-ply worsted wool (worsted spun, not worsted weight). It is strong and smooth. Stay away from knitting yarns. Any linen seems to work well and smooth, shiny, multi-ply silks are a dream. In Canada we have a shop called Maurice Brassard & Fils that will send you sample cards or a sample book (for a fee) so you can touch the yarn. You might want to see if you can get something similar from stores in your country.

What brand name of wool do you use to weave the band? Do you use the same wool to weave the outer layer?

Thanks for your wonderful video. You certainly have a lot of patience. I would like to see how you connect the pieces of cap together. Wool and linen. Your banding is intriguing. I would love to see how it loom is set up. One critique, you refer to this headwear as hats. Hats have a brim that goes all the way around. Caps have a bill in front or none at all, like what you make. There is a difference. Did Lincoln wear a stovepipe cap? It was a hat. Blessings to. Keep ‘‘em coming!

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I suspect our headware language may be regional as around here a cap is a type of hat. I am not a citizen of the USA (I assume you are since you brought up Lincoln) and I know we have differences in our lexicon. Here in Canada, we wear touques in winter, but I'll forgive you for calling it a beanie or stocking cap or knit cap or whatever ;)

Your hats are absolutely amazing! Do you have a pattern for sale for this? I’d love to make one

I do not have a pattern for sale. It did not occur to me that it would be something others may want to do. Sounds like another item for my to-do list. Thanks for the suggestion!

Where along the Cabot Trail is your shop? I used to live in Cheticamp.

The Store is called ArtsNorth and it's located near Dingwall and Cape North. I sell items on consignment there. My own studio has a retail section and it's attached to my home in Sydney. When dropping off items at ArtsNorth, we always stop for supper in Cheticamp.

I'm very curious as to how it looks where the two ends of the tablet woven trim meet. Do they overlap, fold over, or just sit snug against eachother?
@KariFellWeaves
@KariFellWeaves 2 жыл бұрын
I usually snug them up. Sometimes there is a slight overlap, but I do not fold over as I don't like the bulk. It looks a bit raw, but it is secure. I can put a photo on my facebook page if you'd like a close-up?

I am wondering if I can make my own cards and use and recycle detergent bottles for it instead of index card material. Not for the reenactment event evenings at the fire, but for the at home production of bands, where it does not need to meet requirements.
@KariFellWeaves

You absolutely can! My first cards were a light cardboard, similar to the insert in men's dress shirt packages.

@@KariFellWeaves trying it then and hoping, my ocd will not get in my way, hand cutting the edges. My first set were playing cards, but the holes got worn out after two warps and made for wonky turning and crossed over threads, but I did the band free hanging, maybe on a boary like you did, the tablets last longer, too. Will hope to finally make some videos, once my computer and camera are set up. So far, I only use an older tablet and it is crappy in video quality.
