Start slowly, reward him for just looking at you for the first few days. As his attention span increases, you can gradually increase the difficulty of your exercises. Also, pre training exercise really helps with some puppies.

This is exactly what I'm doing with my puppy that is about the same age as yours. I got him on Wednesday. This breed is great for training and I love how easily they learn! Mine was more reserved in the beginning but still always keeps his tail up, then once he's settled in he's looking for things to chew and is starting to test me to see what he can and can't get away with. He'll start off chewing his toys and then try to sneak and chew his bed or my pillow, or a shoe. It doesn't take much correction to stop him though as he watches for my reaction. Usually just saying "Uh" and giving him a look gets him to stop.

New sub here. As a trainer of some 45 years this is so great to see. So many breeders don't even bother handling the pups let alone start the training as you do. I give you loads of respect for this. The last pup I bought had no handling at all and very high drive ,so was a biting monster for a while. Now at 16 months she is amazing but it has taken loads of work every day 5/6 times daily. Well done :) Look forward to watching many more of your videos. Lovely pups to. Thank you .

Wow, great work. You have an excellent way with these dogs. I saw dog #3 get up on the table and instantly thought "uh oh, an unconfident dog...he won't learn as quickly"....within 30 seconds you had that nervous dog performing the basic steps. Amazing work - you really know what you're doing.

It fascinates me how different the personalities of the puppies can be! Love the fact that with patience, each pup responds to the training in their own way. I enjoy the way you modify the training to respond to the needs of the puppy's personality. I agree it's important to match the personality of the pup to the prospective owner.

God, SPOT ON!!! You are nailing the Essentials of Training, IE; The Patience Needed, The Tolerance Needed For EACH Personality, describing that each dog has a different temperament and the way an owner should choose a puppy which should be based on temperament NOT looks. A+!!! Thanks for making such a GREAT video about training. YOU'RE AWESOME!!! Wolfy :)

Stonnie, I've trained dogs on and off for 6 years. Mostly off, due to shoulder and back injuries I love to watch others who use the dog's energy and temperment to adjust to how to train the puppy or older dogs. I love shephards and malinois, so thank you for your highly instructive video. Full disclosure: I do not know Stonnie at all, just found his terrific video after searching Malinois here.

thank you for taking the time to make the video's, it has really helped with training my Malinois pup. i have a few questions if you dont mind. 1: what are you using as reward treats in the video and how much are you giving at a time? 2: I got my girl at 11weeks (she 12weeks now), i work with her everyday and have got sit, stay, no and release commands down but come and down are intermittent (her focus i believe), are we far behind the curve at this age with commands? 3: i crate her every night and make her take naps inside as well (i leave the crate door open during the day naps), is this suggested? 4: at 4 months we will be going to k9 academy for both general obediance and protection training, what would you suggest she should be trained in before our first day? you may get im just nervous we are behind on training for the age but yet i understand i cannot cram everything at once as well. many thanks, Paul & Ghost

Hello Stonnie Dennis! First, I love the videos you've been posting. Targeting is a fairly new concept to me, even though my family has had dogs most of my life. We are looking into getting a Belgian Malinois, and I've been interested in training our pup like this. I've read that 16 weeks is the max you can probably train and socialize a dog. Would you agree or disagree with that? If you disagree, how long would I possibly have? Thank you so much!

He's almost a year now...I recently began watching your videos for training tips etc. I had some behavior trouble at first... Chase was very "Skittish " of others. I noticed in your video that most of the reserved puppies were males and the energetic puppies females? Is that common?
