I like the piano music starting at 4:51. I remember being at Yorktown with some middle-school friends around 1970. On a dare, I dropped a blob of mustard from one of those little packets from the 2nd-floor balcony onto the top of some kid's big helium balloon down below on the first floor. I was about 15 years old at the time. They never knew what happened since the balloon was big enough as to not be fazed by the small amount of extra weight. I still feel bad. 🙁

Hard to believe it opened in the 60s

And it's still going strong despite Oakbrook being just down the street

I first came here as a kid in 1970. The mall has done a better job than most at keeping it nearly full of tenants and safe and clean. Over 50 years and still going strong. I miss the days when malls had bookstores and music stores

Been coming to this mall for years. I remember how the fountain used to look (with metal bars) and that there was a Disney Store right where the T-Mobile is now (and it had the original interior layout, with patterned carpet and big TV screens). I also remember the food court having an arcade (I guess it's closed?) as well as an Egg Harbor on ground level (it's over by the Oak Brook mall now).

This was the go-to mall growing up. I probably went through twelve years of back-to-school clothes from the stores: Wieboldts, Montgomery Wards, Carson Pirie Scott. Saw Star Wars in 1977 at the Yorktown AMC, with lines wrapped around the theater. Got to meet Walter Payton at his club there. Loved the Kroch’s & Bretano’s bookstore. Spent hours on a science fair project on human psychology where I categorized walkers’ habits by age, sex, and presence of children in group: whether and how well they followed the walkway patterns, observed how oncoming collision interactions were resolved, trolled them with fabricated collision interactions. Dated a girl who lived in Lombard my last summer living in area before I moved away to college, and we had a lot of fun dates coming here. Had opportunity to go back in 00’s and ate at the Buca di Beppo’s. Last time I was there was in 2018 and saw Creed 2 at that same (but redone) AMC with my parents. Good times and glad this is still around, hanging in there. Thanks for the video and bringing back memories.

Yorktown picking up lately. Just shopping there this weekend after a long while away, they've added an FYE, a bookstore and a few other shops, much busier.

Yorktown appears to be a great mall! Have they torn down Carson's yet and would that be apartments? I do like the video quality.

I haven't been there since the Fox Valley was built. I always liked the way that you could walk outside to get to other stores. Oak Brook was also like that and I always liked to go and browse there too. Hillside was another place I loved to frequent. Thanks for the memories. You did an awesome video. GB

Thanks again for doing this! Love Yorktown mall although it has declined some once Carson’s closed. Miss that store. Another mall I’m close to and have going to since I was a little kid. I believe the Mrs Fields cookie is the only business there that’s still around and still in its exact location as far as I can remember. That little Main Street place used to be Montgomery Ward. Oh the memories!

Wow, I have not been to this mall in several decades! When I was a kid, this was the premier indoor mall to shop at in the Chicagoland area. If I remember right, it also was the biggest indoor mall in the country when built in the late 60's. Anchored by Montgomery Wards, Carson Pirie Scott, J C Penney, Wieboldt's and dozens of smaller stores, you could get lost there! There was also a store called Madigan's that had fashionable clothing for young people at very good prices. Do any Chicago suburbanites remember redeeming their S&H green stamp books at the redemption center on Wieboldt's third floor?🤔

Has this place changed a lot over the years. Von Maur used to be Weiboldts and where the shops at Butterfield sign is used to be Montgomery Wards. As you go up that escalator used to be stairs and at the foot of the stairs was the Harvest House Cafeteria which had amazing food! Miss the old Yorktown!

Reason why these malls still holds up cause they’re near the tollways.

The Yorktown Mall reminds me of Somerset Collection Mall in Troy, Michigan. The Somerset Collection Mall has 4 Department Stores 🏬. The Department Stores 🏬are: 1. Macy's 2. Neiman Marcus 3. Nordstrom 4. Saks Fifth Ave. Troy, Michigan is a rich suburb of Detroit, Michigan.

Oakbrook down the street from this has the upscale stores. No Saks though.

I always thought that Yorktown was a very clean Mall. I like going to the Billy Goat up on the second floor at the food court.

Despite Oak Brook being just down the street this mall holds up very well. I think the large population helps both malls be viable simultaneously.
