I like to turn everything down and work from there. My kicks I start low and I use a lp filter to clean up any distortion. Then I'll gradually turn the kick up a notch until it sounds right. I like to use compressors on samples and sounds. Turn them down a bit and work from there. I'm still learning mixing so I got lots to learn. I also like to run my mpc with studio one. I got a faderport controller with fader controls and if I channel it to the right outputs I can mix and master with the faders which is nice.

I love the part "you know how good music sounds in your headphones" and it's true. If you train your ears, you can mix using headphones. I have headphones because my room is part of my living room, and I don't want to transform my living room into a studio, I want to have fun making music and push my creativity with the limitations I have. I learned a lot trying to figure out how to get the best mixing with headphones and it was totally worth it and probably I learned more things than just mixing in a perfect mixing room. Thanks a lot for the videos and your advice. I bought my MPC one yesterday. I use Cubase but I wanted to avoid distractions from my laptop and use a hardware sequence for the raw idea, and of course later mix and master everything in Cubase. I used a lot during the 90s a Kawai Q80ex with my Emax II (and I still have both), but after watching your videos I fell in love with the MPC because it is a machine that can do much more than just some hip hop beats, and as a sequencer it's pretty strong and of course I have a super powerful sampler as well inside the One. Cheers!

@@malobeats I come from a sampling background, too! As a non classicaly trainied musician it is hard to get into playing chords and I struggle with it myself. But: Grooveboxes like the new MPCs and Maschine have these chord features. So, use them and then randomize the notes and create your own melodies to sample. Use FX like saturation, bit-crushing, filters, LFO' s if you want to get a sound close to "real samples". It takes time and effort to learn this sound design skill but to me it' s worth it. What' s cooler to say than: "I sampled myself!" 😉?!?!

Hi mate, lovely content. I really wish Akai would implement better metering and just for selfish reasons a freeky reverb like the Eventide Black Hole. Perhaps they will add better metering tools in the future. Version 2.11 is released on June 23rd. I'm sure you have seen the excitement in the MPC Community with the anticipated new firmware release. I've been making underground electronic music since 1984, Djing since 1988. Last summer I obtained a two week old mint condition MPC One for a very reasonable price. I haven't released anything for one year, partly due to not feeling inspired cus the music scene in Berlin is fucked. Anyway I thought it was time to use new tools to create an album and a few eps for 2022. This machine is more than capable of doing it all from first concept to final mix down. Mastering, will be done elsewhere.... Blessings from a Brit living in Berlin.

Are you sure that it's really clipping on the master just because the overall mix is in the + dB range? Yes, it will clip if you play it like that, but if you add inserts on the master track, the 32bit floating point audio will route through that before the DA conversion happens. If you do that mixing right and apply a limiter after a compressor, in theory it should be the exact same analog signal as when starting from a - 3dB master level and adding some gain to the compressor to get closer to 0dB before doing anything else like a limiter. That's at least how modern DAWs operate: it will only clip if the signal gets above 0dB at the very final stage of DA conversion.

I'd be really careful about a general EQ on the master that isn't specifically addressing any mixing issues of that particular song. I reacted when you said you'd cut anything below 50 Hz, that would be killer for certain genres where you definitely want some sub bass. Applying a HP filter around 20 Hz and turning anything below ~200 Hz to mono makes a ton of sense though, as a general rule of thumb. But any EQing beyond that (on the master) should be done with caution and where the ears really need to guide you. Every song will need different EQ. All this said, I 100% agree about picking the AIR Compressor on the master. It is *by far* the best compressor on this machine. I made the mistake initially of assuming that I should use the Master Compressor plugin on the master outputs, but it turns out that this plugin sounds like crap. Personally I love the AIR Compressor so much that I don't see the need to apply the Maximizer on top of it. Subtle EQ as appropriate, the compressor (with slower attack and release) as the second step, and then the limiter as the third step is all I need for my songs. Still learning though. 😊

Hey David, I appreciate you taking the time to share your input it really means a lot and there is a lot of valuable information here. It was hard for me to do this video and I did not want to release it since mixing and mastering is a whole separate art and it’s pretty impossible to explain it within 15 minutes in a video lol but I still did my best to put it out and of course there’s so much more technicality that goes into mastering and mixing but this method has worked for me so far to get a rough mix and master for my beats when I export them. Again I appreciate you taking the time to share this information with us thank you brother
@sinewaymusic3 жыл бұрын
@@malobeats It's good that you're helping people get started with it, I appreciate the effort! Just want to encourage your audience to really use their ears. On that note, I recommend that you try to replace the Master Compressor with a second Air Compressor on your mixes to see if that sounds even better. When I A/B tested it here, I stopped using the Master Compressor entirely. Plus, it's way easier to see the impact of the Air compressor visually so you don't accidentally crush things too much. I believe the Master Compressor was developed by Akai themselves when they must have been drunk, while the Air Compressor is clearly high end. 😂
