Seems odd that they didn't mention that the mother dies in the process. She devotes herself to the care of the eggs, not moving from the spot, even to eat. While still alive in the shot with the hatched eggs, you can see she's looking pretty bad and is probably days away from dying from starvation. It's sad but it's obviously a reproductive strategy that works.

Why do people think its in their best interest to disturb the nest? Even just by being there and being around her was probably extremely stressful. She is literally using all of her energy to watch those babies and we think we need to be involved. Human nature sucks. People don’t realize how much damage we’ve done to the animals by being nosy like this. Dozens didn’t need to flock there. My opinion doesn’t matter though, but human presence isn’t the key to everything being successful. For animals it does more damage or harm than good.

Same thing happened here at a crested cara cara nest. People rudely flocked to the nest. The parents were frightened off of the nest. They were not allowed to feed and hydrate their chicks. The parents were not allowed to come to the nest and shelter their babies from the desert heat. The male abandoned the nest entirely. Those of us who genuinely cared about birds were grief stricken. Such suffering.

I was thinking the same thing: leave the mother octopus and her babies ALONE. She may have been stressed. Yeah, because every moron MUST have a selfie with the birds. People in general are so selfish and out of touch when it comes to just about everything, but our wildlife deserves better than this stooge behavior. Shame on them. We need to eradicate all zoos as well and just have preserves for endangered species - no human visitors except for caretakers. If a person wants to view animals, crack open a book or find the picture online.

Sad that she was probably moments away from expiring when that last bit of footage was captured. You can immediately see the massive toll the brooding process & lack of nutrition (they don’t eat while guarding their eggs) has taken on her health. At least she lived long enough to see her babies hatch. Tragic but also kinda beautiful to think that the last sight some octo-moms get to see is their lil’ babies awkwardly swimming off into the future.🥹

She had no option. When a female octopus goes into a den to have her babies, she never leaves them. I don't know if she'd fight anything that tried to enter the den (though the giant Pacific octopus in Attenborough's series Planet Earth - or Life. Think it's the former - didn't attack the camera or cameraman). She won't stop blowing oxygenated water over them or stop cleaning them (or they'd get fungus or algae on them) until she sees them start to hatch. Then she dies.

It is satisfying that the hatching and leaving the nest was not done with a crowd of people flopping around and disturbing the water, shining bright lights through. We nature lovers can be too much of a good thing sometimes....
