OctoMom is already in the process of dying when she lays her eggs. I'm sure the divers knew this. Having drivers around may have been stressful but didn't affect the outcome and we have this amazing footage for everyone to enjoy.

Seems odd that they didn't mention that the mother dies in the process. She devotes herself to the care of the eggs, not moving from the spot, even to eat. While still alive in the shot with the hatched eggs, you can see she's looking pretty bad and is probably days away from dying from starvation. It's sad but it's obviously a reproductive strategy that works.

Same thing happened here at a crested cara cara nest. People rudely flocked to the nest. The parents were frightened off of the nest. They were not allowed to feed and hydrate their chicks. The parents were not allowed to come to the nest and shelter their babies from the desert heat. The male abandoned the nest entirely. Those of us who genuinely cared about birds were grief stricken. Such suffering.

I agree- when they showed the shot of all those divers at night, I was kind of horrified. They seemed so happy that so many people were seeing the octopus! If Octopuses are as sensitive as they say, this must have been stressful for her.
@starjunkie5328

I was thinking the same thing: leave the mother octopus and her babies ALONE. She may have been stressed. People are only interested in nature all of a sudden when they can become part of a rubbernecking horde. Meanwhile, the boaters are probably throwing trash into the ocean and polluting it with gas fumes.

Yeah, because every moron MUST have a selfie with the birds. People in general are so selfish and out of touch when it comes to just about everything, but our wildlife deserves better than this stooge behavior. Shame on them. We need to eradicate all zoos as well and just have preserves for endangered species - no human visitors except for caretakers. If a person wants to view animals, crack open a book or find the picture online.

Wonder how she felt having all these maroons with bright lights filming her while she was trapped in that pipe? Did a single one of them, I wonder, think to bring her a clam, crab, small fish to eat? Not that it would have saved her but it might have made her slow death less painful. 💖🐙

She had no option. When a female octopus goes into a den to have her babies, she never leaves them. I don't know if she'd fight anything that tried to enter the den (though the giant Pacific octopus in Attenborough's series Planet Earth - or Life. Think it's the former - didn't attack the camera or cameraman). She won't stop blowing oxygenated water over them or stop cleaning them (or they'd get fungus or algae on them) until she sees them start to hatch. Then she dies.

It hurts knowing she starves herself to death and when they go out on their after hatching many feed others and some survive. The octopus is an intriguing animal. But it still puzzles me. Why does a spider have 8 legs and not more. Why does an octopus have their number of tentacles, not more, not less. Why do four legged critters have four legs not 6 or 8 or more. Since dogs have been living with humans for a long time, they are said to be able to read our emotions. Many dog owners may have some idea of what they are feeling, such as going to the side of someone who is sad and comforting them with a lick, or wagging their tails vigorously when they are happy. Dogs have excellent senses and cognitive abilities, and can distinguish the slightest sounds of breathing, heartbeats, and tone of voice, and respond to human emotions

Devoted until death. I wonder about the soul of an Octopus and where she is now. There was a very famous band that sang a song about where the octopus is and they were called the Beatles.
