I’m an artist that painted in my room as a child, so I totally understand your dilemma. How about dedicating a corner in her room with good lighting. Then get a outdoor rug and put a solid rug pad underneath. Then for the walls you can use bead board or other wall treatments sold at Lowe’s an install with 3M tape so it’s not permanent, but washable. Paint the “wall panels” with glossy paint so it washes off well.

My daughter was the artist among our two children and she did a crayon drip piece against the white wall in our main bathroom. When she moved out (she's 27 now) we also found neon pink glitter glue in the carpet in her room. I never got upset about any of it because her creativity always brought me so much joy... Watching her brain work in full color as she grew. As much as I love every age with my children, I still really miss those innocent days of color and self expression❤

Kim watching you sorting toys on Meredith’s floor ought back so many memories for me. I had two boys 9 and 6 and then a girl! It was a wonderful time! My sons are now almost 56 and 53. My daughter passed five years ago. But I can remember sitting on the floor sorting, sorting. With the boys it was cowboys and Indians, excuse me, Cowboys and Native Americans, green soldiers, Revolutionary soldiers and British, and of course legos. We had a dark moss green deep rug and of course the soldiers would always wind up on the rug with their bayonets aiming up. My husband who never wore slippers had bandaids on his feet for years! Then when my daughter came along any little tiny thing was her favorite even Smurfs which I couldnt stand. I was back on the floor again! You were working like crazy and I was just sitting here smiling with my memories! Thank you!

You could try a plexiglass or clear plastic frame behind her desk on the wall, and on top of the desk itself--she could layer cute pictures behind it so it's decorative, but easy to clean and doesn't stain any surfaces. This is what we did for my daughter who is also an artist. 😅 And you can always remove it later. And as far as the floor, a good boho rug from the thrift store under the desk will work and if it's colorful no one will ever know! 🎉

So happy for you! You are such a great example of patience, humility and living life without having to make things perfect. I wanted to cheer when you just threw those dresses up in that closet. This is my girl right here! When my oldest child went off to college 2 years ago I pulled her aside and said I have the most important life lesson I need to teach you. It is how to fold a fitted sheet properly. Once I had her FULL attention I proceed to quickly ball it up in a giant mess and throw it in the closet. She looked at me so strange and I said, "that's the lesson- life is too short to care about how your fitted sheet is folded". 😂

Yes! I have friends who are so stressed about folding a fitted sheet. I don't get it. It gets put on the bed where the wrinkles come out, who cares if it is folded perfectly and put in the linen closet?

One of the bunks with a full bed on bottom and a twin up to would be fun. Then the girls could have sleepovers, cuddle and watch movies. Etc. that’s what we had in one of the bedrooms at our ski house, and it was so much fun. All 4 of us girls would literally crash in the same room watching movies. In fact we are all in our 30’s and 40’s now and we still occasionally have movie binges when we can get time together.

The joy on your face! So happy you finally get to move in to your new spaces. Re the kids art work, open five folders on your computer, with their names and then in each folder, add separate folders for the years, either by age or date and add all the photo's of their artwork. That way, you'll have it all in the right spot for each child and you could print the whole years worth off in one go. You could also save them and just make one giant photo book for their 18th birthdays. If you save to a back up drive, it'll keep them safe. If you start from this point onwards, it won't seem so daunting and you can still gradually add the photo's that Alex took.

Also sell what you don’t want or aren’t using. Then you can put that towards the new beds, etc. this is a dream house, make it special for everyone. Even if you shop at thrift shops or antique shops you can get beautiful things. I have a “Princess” theme room as my sisters tease. I prefer more Jane Austen inspired. I have my desk for work, paying bills, grad school stuff…. Then my grandmothers antique vanity and stool that I took floral curtains and Velcro and made the skirt around the bench. It came out gorgeous!!! Then I just went with my old Full size bed. And a beautiful tv stand with more storage and a dresser. I’m one of those girls who still likes a dresser drawer for undies, bras, pajamas and workout wear. It’s just this thing I have. Plus I have a ton of clothing and need all the closet space. So start with a theme. Now I don’t mean pawpatrols. Think broader, like “Art Studio” or “Jane Austen” or …. I don’t know what theme for boys? Space? 😂 dinosaurs, monsters, sports and like Varsity letters and pennants and trophies would be cute. But that can help a lot when decorating. Feel free to reach out if you need any ideas. I love decorating by theme and I’m the queen of finding great deals.

Each box was stuffed with 12 plus years of memories for them to now share with their children.

Re: painting…go get a big square of sheet vinyl flooring to put on the floor under the easel she’s using. The walls can be protected with something as simple as hanging a curtain, even a shower curtain. Remove acrylic paint with ammonia, rubbing alcohol, or acetone. Don’t use rubbing alcohol on the walls, though, it’ll take off latex paint too.

Per the kids artwork- take the best or funnest of their artwork and frame them and hang them in your office- as they make new artwork, change them out after taking a picture of them. My oldest is 40 years old, there are Christmas ornaments that she and her 2 siblings made that I either laminated or framed to either hang on the tree or hang up on the wall during the Christmas season and all of it goes back into the holiday bins. My grandchildren always gravitate to those keepsakes and I have artwork from each of them that I have framed and hang and rotate through out the year- my decor style is not so precious that my children’s and grandchildren’s artwork can’t “mar” the decor- it is incorporated into our home and our home looks up to date but curated and not cookie cutter like a lot of influencers and trends are- and so many visitors always make admiring remarks on our style of decorating, curated eclectic is what I call it but on the minimal style because I can’t stand a cluttered over done look- hence changing things out throughout the year and storing things in bins to change out later.

Maybe a trundle bed for Meredith for when she has guests come over. I loved that as a kid. At one point my mom did buy me legit bunk beds (I was an only child), but I loved that option for awhile. Also, when we bought our daughter a loft bed from IKEA on the one we got the bunk was like extra high. There was a rail, but even growing a bit made it uncomfortable to sit up in bed. But our daughter decorated the crap out of that lower section as a hideout, a castle, lots and lots of imaginative play, bead curtains, she loved draping fabric around. It’s a fantastic reading nook and easy to set up plushies around in there like little friends. We used a blow up mattress for slumber party. She was so imaginative, painted, sketching, all the art stuff, loved princess dresses. She never really was one to watch TV much, she was just happy playing make believe. Art, putting makeup on mommy and herself. I feel my daughter is between your Elanor & Meredith as far as preferences!!

Happy you guys got to move in finally. Here’s a tip from one mother of a dress up fanatic to another. Also, my daughter has a tiny room. I recommend you move the dresser out of the closet to provide more hanging space. The dresses are big and bulky, and they will only get bigger as she does. Maybe buy some of those dresser stickers and let her help you decorate her dresser so that it’s more appealing to look at without having to paint it.

A storage bed would be great for Meredith. The extra drawers under the bed could be used for off season clothing, extra bed linens or toys. The armoire in the office would look great in natural wood. A good sanding and some natural stain is all you need. You might want to wait until you decide on a different desk or where you put your current desk before you sand and stain it though. For the kid's artwork and keepsakes, get a storage bin with a snap on lid (to protect from bugs and rodents) for each kid and sort what you have into their bins. Throw random pictures, trinkets and all those ultrasound pics into them. Put them up somewhere for storage and keep a smaller folder for each kid in your office or desk. For items the kids want to display, put a cork board in each of their rooms where they can enjoy their own creations (at least for a while). Once or twice a year, transfer the contents of the smaller folders into the bigger bins in storage. When the kids grow up, they will love getting those keepsakes that you have saved for them. For your own room, a dresser and a chest of drawers will now fit into the room, which will free up some of your closet space. How nice would it be if the only things in your closet are dresses and shoes? I'm so happy for your family to finally be moving into the new spaces. A reputable builder could have rebuilt your entire house in the amount of time it took the current guy to do it. Have a great day!
