@jscottlewis71: The irony is that Cass apparently spent months pestering John and Denny to let her in the group -- they thought her obesity would be bad for the young, sexy image they wanted. But then, of course, her voice ended up totally defining the group's sound, and it's impossible to imagine them without her!

Denny was actually very much in tune with Cass. Supposedly it was John who was the holdout. Cass Elliott really supported and defined the group. She was honestly, the voice of the group.

I met a man last year in Vista, CA, and we talked for a few hours, who was the Mamas' drummer for their first tour, as well as in the studio. He worked with the Wrecking Crew, of course. I asked him a lot of questions, about Philips, Phil Spector, etc. Very educational for me.

Simmond Cannon you really cannot be serious. Mamas and papas were one of the best vocal , harmonies type groups ever. They had fantastic voices. As far as the music saved them, while John philips and Denny Doherty played guitar, studio musicians like the wrecking crew played the fantastic music

@@stripervince1 they did not have great vocals and could barely harmonize, they were OK and had a unique sound. My father was a professional singer(tenor) and I know what I'm talking about. Not to mention that John and Michelle were busy helping set up the festival (along with producer Lou Adler), that they did not have time to rehearse before the show. Plus they were the closing act and had no chance to try and top what the Who and Hendrix did earlier. Not a bad performance, though

And Sharon and Roman went to Monterey Pop...they bought a large fabric wall calendar with a big carrot on it with the months of 1968 on it. It’s actually seen in the movie, ‘Monterey Pop’ when the camera films various spots throughout the art fair outside the amphitheater...one scene shows the calendar hung on a display above people sitting on the ground. The calendar is on the wall of the living room just beyond where Jay and Sharon were killed.

The group's set was ragged because John (and Michelle to an extent) coordinated the festival with Lou Adler made rehearsing and getting into musical shape impossible. The tech issues (a lot of it due to the Who and Hendrix playing earlier) didn't help either. All four were at the Festival every moment and were really burnt out when it came time to play

A "straight shooter" is someone who doesn't miss when he shoots. Michelle's infidelities triggered John's jealousy, which was in turn the inspiration for many of the group's songs. The song is a warning from John that it might be dangerous to cross him.

It is about johns pastime with heroin , "holding " is slang that means you are in possession of drugs . Come on people this is basic 60 "s slang . If you know what I mean. He was a "shooter " he was shooting heroin at that time of his life . He has been very public with his long term drug use , that started before the band was formed. "Baby whatcha holding , half of that belongs to me " Bonus Triva : Hotel California : " Warm smell of colitas , rising up through the air " , he is smoking a joint people , in So. Calif in the early seventies "colitas " was common slang for the little "buds" you would get in your "smoke" (pot). the Eagles were based in So. Calif.
