The guy who came up with the alpha wolf theory, Rudolph Schenkel, spent the rest of his career explaining he was wrong. A captive wolf thrown together with other captive wolves will have an alpha which is where he got the theory. But when they started studying wild wolves he found that the packs were just famalies, run by the parents

In wolf packs both parents are dominant over their offspring. Wolfpacks are families, they are not intensely competing for rank in the pack, the parents are the alphas if you will.
@matthewbooth9265

correct, though in exclosure situations, with packs formed often without their parents etc, the alpha thing is a bit more relevant.
@MrCrunch808
@MrCrunch808 Жыл бұрын
@@matthewbooth9265 not relevant for correctly documenting behavior of wild wolves though. Only in rare instances would multiple wolf packs be forced together and have to go through doing the whole alpha thing. The alpha theory, ironically, is far more applicable to humans, chimps, and gorillas. Though it stops really applying to humans since we are smart enough to not have to organize ourselves in that manner.

Wolves are wonderful, intelligent creatures. I've gotten to know them quite well over the last 30 years. It actually made me so sad when I saw them heading into the pond area a few months ago and saw there was a new alpha, a son of the old alpha. The last alpha I had gotten to know over 7 years. I never saw him again after I saw his son had become the leader of the pack.

Yeah Shaun Ellis is a showman and that is it. As a wolf handler elsewhere, don't be Shaun. No need to get down, eat liver, growl, get in face of wolf etc to show dominance. It's all just great tv but dangerous and a wonderful way for you or someone else to get bitten. Just raise the wolves well, avoid conflict, use distraction and good socialisation and the wolves will be chill, like ours are:)

We know now that wolf packs in the wild function as a family and the parents are the leaders. If the guy in joes story was dealing with wild wolves there would be no alpha, just the father of the pack. In captivity wolves are in a group of nonfamily members and change their behavior to what we used to think was how wild wolf pack hierarchy was structured.
@iibessebastien2103

So the father of the pack is the alpha..
@hamzamian6048
@hamzamian6048 Жыл бұрын
@@iibessebastien2103 In a sense but there is no beta or omega and the younger males (pups of the leader) don't challenge the father for control over the pack. When they become old enough they leave the pack to find a mate and create a new pack. The person Joe is talking about probably was interacting with a pack of wolves that are placed in a large wildlife sanctuary setting and the pack is artificially created by the people that rescue the wolf and raise it with non familial wolves before attempting to release the wolf to the pack in the sanctuary.
