Way to go, Luke! It's good to practice and, it can be a fun day. We used a Clorox bottle tied to a brick. (Drew a face on it ...like Wilson from the movie.) Good stuff. Thanks.

Great video Joe, I've been taking my young boys out sailing with me and we've been practicing these drills so we all know what to do if/when it happens. No amount of theory can replace a good practice session!

My partner and I were recently out sailing on his Hobie 16 and he fell overboard while out on the trapeze. This video instantly popped into my head and I knew exactly what to do. Thanxs for saving our sail!

wow, that's great that this worked - that's my intention when making the videos but i never really know if they are working for people. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for lesson. I only knew ( and practiced ) the 3rd one, and taught it to my grandson when sailing with him.

Awesome video Joe! As a fellow sailor, I do not think we do enough man overboard drills. Great job and I thought how you talked about and showed the different techniques for different situations was spot on. You are the man Joe!!!

Last time that I went out, I lost my crew member in 15/20 konts of wind. I've tried the tack technique but the jib that was free, toke my bow downwind, I was really far away from he yet so I had to capsize 180 to stop the boat. I was in a sailing school so obviously there were one rib ready for us. The boat was one topaz Argo and my weight is only 65 kg so... I don't know that maybe was the best method in that particular case. Good video.

Best option sometimes even for an experienced sailor is shove into wind and get the MOB to swim back.

I've just been watching through your channel, it is awesome Joe! So much good stuff! I take my wife and young kids on a Caper Cat 14. Just wondering why you do the pickup on the windward hull rather than the leeward? I was thinking leeward would be best so that you get blown towards MOB rather than away if you stop too soon?
@JoyriderTV4 жыл бұрын
The reason is so that you are able to help. If you pick up the MOB on the leeward side, if there's much wind and you go down there you risk the capsize.

Anyone ever do anything crazy/dumb stupid that may or may not resulted in a capsize? The other day I was coming in from trapizing and somehow threaded the tiller extension arm underneath a strap on my PFD. It was quite the challenge getting it back out around the end of the extention arm in high winds without capsizing. Lol

What about if your by yourself? Not sure if you covered that or not. I’m usually by myself on a 14. Thank you.
@JoyriderTV5 жыл бұрын
If you fall off and you're on your own, unfortunately all that you can hope for is for the boat to capsize, for someone to spot you and pick you up or that you're still holding the mainsheet - another good reason to always be holding the mainsheet.
