It's just like my grandpa used to say: the purpose of comedy is to hurt people. That's why when someone gets gagged or goofed on, we say, "they've been victimized by the joke". Everybody knows that. Everybody knows that it's impossible for anything to be funny unless it is accompanied by an equivalent amount of real human pain and suffering, that's the alchemist's first law of comedy.

He's just an old guy who can't/won't keep up with what's actually cool and what isn't. Atkinson is one of the many people who, aside from anything else like how obviously not all jokes have victims, how all victims aren't the same, what is and isn't prejudice, punching down vs punching up etc , doesn't understand the difference between someone being offended and something being offensive Someone could be offended by any manner of things. Ppl are offended by Starbucks not putting merry Christmas on its cups. Someone could be offended at road runner because their mother was killed by a falling piano. Being offended is about you. On the other hand something being offensive is about what it SAYS. Its about the content. If i make a joke about how trans women are men in dresses, that joke is objectively offensive because it carries with it an offensive mesage, ie its transphobic. Someone might not take offence to it but that doesn't make it not offensive Also, completely irrelevant, but this mam gave the ok to a set of mr bean nfts. Just want ppl not to forget that this is a thing Edit : by the way this is why ppl who say offensive jokes usually do know they are saying offensive jokes say they do so and defend that by the its just a joke bro instead of claiming ita up to the listener or smth
@Nionivek
@Nionivek Жыл бұрын
Oh I know the answer to your edit! Because MOST offensive jokes... the joke is simply how offensive it is, not how true it is. So for example if I made a joke saying that "all women do all day is wear high heel shoes and wash dishes", the JOKE is how untrue the stereotype is with the shock at how I'd actually say it (Which is a DOUBLE joke because it also is a joke at our polite society). The joke isn't that women actually do this. . THAT is why people who say offensive jokes say "Its just a joke" and don't defend themselves by claiming "It is the eye of the beholder". . People tend to get the context of offensive jokes wrong quite often. My favorite example of this would be jokes making fun of tragedies. The person who misunderstands it goes "Your belittling a tragedy" when the joke is actually "This is extremely tragic". . Mind you... Not that an offensive joke... can't be just plain offensive... Only that there is a little bit more to offensive jokes than just "Offending someone".
@DimT670
@DimT670 Жыл бұрын
@@Nionivek you don't actually understand what im saying What you describe isn't actually offensive jokes, except i suppose for the shock humour or poking fun at polite society which are no less offensive than any other offensive jokes. You are mostly describing a joke making fun of offensive jokes, which is completely different thing. An actual offensive joke is not that. Its a joke that carries within it an offensive message, or requires the audience to be racist, sexist etc instead of having a punchline, or both What you are talking about is, for example, someone going " yes and my boyfriend assumed id have a closet full of shoes and dresses, because as we all know that's all women do right? Buy clothes and shoes and nothing else". Thats not an offensive joke that's a joke making fun of sexist stereotypes An actual offensive joke would be something like "well ofc his political proposals are terrible and evil. What can one expect from a person in a wheelchair am i right?. This joke isn't making fun of any prejudice it has prejudice built into it as it assumes all people in a wheelchair are evil because of that. (by the way this is a real joke a dude did in greek national tv and was then slammed by disability advocates and apologised) You see how these two are different? Also again. A joke being offensive is different from someone being offended. A joke is objectively offensive based on the content and context while someone being offended is subjective and someone can be offended at all manner of non offensive things for a multitude of reasons. And the goal of offensive jokes isn't to offend people usually, its to cater to an audience that already caries the prejudice you include in the joke. People make offensive jokes to receptive audiences they don't make offensive jokes to people who aren't receptive. This is why people usually won't make a homophobic joke in front of a person they know is gay, because they know the audience won't be receptive

The victims are the people too dumb to realize that escalators are still usable when broken. I once had an electric toothbrush that ran out of battery in the middle of brushing my teeth. I thought to myself "Great, now how am I supposed to finish brushing my teeth?", took me five seconds to realize it was still a toothbrush. In that moment I was the but of the joke. Assuming the escalator joke truly has no victim, what exactly makes it funny? What keeps it from being an observational statement?

@@pallydan893 to answer your question with another question: why can't an observation be a joke? they're not mutually exclusive. besides, if you have to explain why something is funny for it to be a joke, then nothing is a joke, because there's always someone who doesn't find it funny.
@lordlemmingman
@lordlemmingman Жыл бұрын
@@pallydan893 First off, I think comedy is a very hard thing to define. Different people find different things funny and even the greatest comedians can't figure out a formula for a joke, it's like creating a formula for a hit song. But I think a big component of humor is subversion of expectations. The escalator joke is funny because it subverts our expectations of when is an escalator considered broken. Another example, musical humor. There is that guy, Jon Sudano, that really hit it big because he replaced the lyrics to various songs with the lyrics from All Star by Smash Mouth. The humor comes from the subversion and juxtaposition of the music and the lyrics. I personally do not laugh at those because I am thinking of someone being lesser, but because of the absurdness of the situation. I'm not saying that you can't ever have a victim in comedy, comedy can be a very powerful tool for bringing attention to and dealing with some terrible things in our lives. But to say that EVERY joke has a victim feels like an over simplification of a complex and nuanced topic. It's like trying to say every show follows The Hero's Journey. Yes, you can fit a lot of stories into that mold but you can't make EVERY story fit it. A game show does not fit the Hero's Journey. You can't make one mold fit everything.

Not every joke needs a victim! See, I made one up! A Star Trek crewmember is turning into a werewolf and biting the crew. Spock turns to Kirk and asks, "What should we do about this situation?" And Kirk responds, "I don't know, we're in a real Kobayashi AROOOOO"
@dadladfrag
@dadladfrag Жыл бұрын
Kirk would be the victim, as you are making him act foolish. And in turn, anyone who really likes Kirk and believes his character wouldn’t do that would be the victim.

But like, thats actually Beans point isnt it? That a joke will always have a butt, something or someone getting punched AT. Like its fine to say don't punch down, but we have to acknowledge that humor is based in poking at things from strange perspectives in an effort to find amusement with the subject. Slapstick works because we view suffering from a perspective where there isn't usually long lasting pain or trauma; Tom the cat gets his tail cut off and we laugh and are fine with laughing because we know Tom feels no actual pain from it. I dunno.

Hi, I loved this animation! Just a small thing, you've listed the wrong episode in the description as the source, it was ep 616: professor honey that they did this bit in. I only noticed because I've listened to it quite a few times now... 😬 I really liked the animation though, you've elevated an already pretty incredible bit!
