Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
-- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

Hey Scott, friendly reminder that thief is super good against Tate and Liza's final two pokemon. They both have sitrus berries, and you can just steal em for way more recovery than the shell bell. Also hidden power water is a little weird in gen 3, I think you coulda got a lot more utility outta grass or ice instead

i find it interesting that Scott decided to give the rival the grass starter for this run. i think Mudkip/Marshtomp would probably cause more problems with its ground typing. mainly in the 2nd mandatory rival fight. Manectric might be one of the pokemon fast enough with its 105base speed to use a -speed nature. it basically out sped every single pokemon in the 2nd half of the game by like 80 speed. HP grass might also be better than HP water, especially against whiscash. HP ice could also work, mostly against the Cradily but Whishcash would only take neutral dmg just like HP water.
@WorkInProgressX

It might just be force of habit for gen 1 and 2. Though it’s not super influential because besides R113, the rival isn’t good.

@@ThatGuyThai no he doesn't, he usually gives himself the hardest one. If he did easiest then he would've made the rival choose Torchick, which doesn't resist or is immune to Electric attacks. Like that other guy said, it's probably just from always doing gen 1 and 2 runs, which the grass type would be the hardest for an electric type to fight since they resist those attacks, and probably didn't consider that Marshtomp would be ground type later.
@finally_dorian
@finally_dorian 5 ай бұрын
@@ThatGuyThai Actually in Gen 1 and 2, he claims to go for the most difficult. I just need someone to tell this man that Brendan's and May's teams are the same in Emerald... the different rosters are for different starters... like in Gen 1.
@ryomaanime4563
@ryomaanime4563 5 ай бұрын
@@finally_dorian The actual difference is that they don't use the same lead. Brendan lead with Slugma, while May lead with Wingull (when you pick mudpik, otherwise there' no difference). It's important for speedrunner because Wingull can break the 3 turn setup they use by using growl/supersonic Otherwise, it's ok. And this fight is a lot easier in emerald than ruby/sapphire where they have numel/wailord with grovyle in this fight. A tanky opponent with rollout is always kinda terrifying

As a heads up, a super effective non-STAB Bite will do less damage than a neutral, STAB Thunderbolt/Ice Beam/Surf/etc. There is nothing that resists Electric in the Hoenn Elite 4 where but would be better, so unless you are worried about PP or tryting to flinch an opponent, keeping Bite over Thunderbolt for Phoebe was a misplaced. People have already mentioned HP-grass over water (i personally think while it is better, HP Water wasnt a bad idea at all). Great video overall!!

I actually love Manectric. I think it looks great and as a kid, I was super excited to see my Electrike evolve. I just wish it was a bit stronger in terms of its special attack and had a better growth rate. On the note of that growth rate, I'm pretty sure they did it because it was enough of a power boost early on enough in levels that they wanted you to have to grind a bit more for it

You can use the thief tm earlier in the game and get items like the sitrus berry from Watsons manectric and the white herb from flannery torkoal, Also the best way to set up on the wailord is to bring it down to red HP as it will still use most of its water spouts regardless of it hp once done it will start using body slam.

Electric could very well be the single worst mono type for solo play. The fact that Ground is both super effective against them and immune to their STAB is something no other type has to deal with prior to the introduction of Fairy as a counter to Dragon. To make matters worse, unlike Dragon types, Electric types tend to get poor coverage options, especially in early generations where Rock/Ground walls them hard, and even without Rock typing, most Ground types tend to have higher than average defense that makes them almost as good as resting to non-STAB normal attack.

I figured that you had deliberately picked Naughty nature with Roxanne in mind, giving yourself an Attack boost without sacrificing any important stats with regards to beating her. I'm also unsure about which HP would be best for Manectric; Ice definitely has its upsides, with Drake as well as Steven's Cradily taking super effective damage from it. However, Water is really good for Camerupt, as well as having synergy with Rain Dance. Grass is really good for Whiscash, though, so it's hard to say for sure. I'm sure you'll figure out an answer to that question when you've gotten a better feel for this game though.

Should probably have lowered speed here. I'm going to invest more time in figuring out key speed thresholds needed for solo runs. Wallace's fastest Pokemon is 118 speed for example and Drake's Salamence is one of the faster Pokemon in the game. As long as a mon can move first against those, extra speed is superfluous.

Plus, I have a soft spot for dog pokemon XD Its stats may not be the best, but its SpAtk and Spd are pretty good all things considered and make it a solid in-game poke to add to your team. The most optimal way to play a solo challenge is probably to support its available set-up moves rather than its inherent superior attacking type. HP water is great for the ground and steeel types plus rain, but I wonder though if perhaps having Howl + a physical HP would be better.

I kinda agree with you: largely I love the Gen 3 designs, but there are some really strange over-designed ones and to me, Manetric is one of them. You've been doing these runs for a while so I guess you know how to do these better than me but in my opinion: 1) HP Water is nice for Camerupt which I know you struggled with but it's basically not as good as Grass or Ice for anything else. In particular, Ice would have helped for a lot of Pokémon you had a problem with. A regularly effective Thunderbolt is better than a super effective Hidden Power. 2) I think you were completely paralysed by fear of missing against Sydney; it REALLY wasn't worth keeping Shock Wave, especially if you went for HP Ice. 3) Your movesets against Steven were hilarious. I do kinda think with Slow rate Pokémon, you really can't use rare candies earlier than the champion. I don't know if you do use the Pokénav Trainer Eyes, but the route with the day care is pretty good experience once the teams get better from a few battles. I think it's better to do training then using that, although I do appreciate the late Fly badge makes this a bit of a pain in the butt. Worth experimenting with though at least. It's such a shame it doesn't get Flamethrower in this generation!

That Steven battle was an emotional roller coaster. Funny thing about Manectric, in gen IV they decided all of a sudden that it should get Fire moves as coverage, so it can get Flamethrower in those games which helps a lot with coverage. It feels like there's a giant gap in effectiveness between Electric types that have solid coverage moves (The Electabuzz line comes to mind with Ice Punch) and those that are stuck with mostly Electric.

I adore Manectric! I caught it in my original Emerald run because I wanted an electric type to complement the team I had at the time. I didn’t expect much, but she saved the team many times in my Wallace fight, Steven Stone fight, AND pretty much carried the entire team on her back for the Battle Frontier. I was also getting into battling friends at the time, and she beat two of my friends AND a kid who said my team was garbage XDDD Since then, if she’s an option, I catch an Elektrike. I used her again in ORAS, and named her after my OG one as I lost the cartridge years ago. Elektrike/Manectric was always an MVP for me, so seeing this run was a fun trip down memory lane.

I actually often wondered in your playthroughs if it might be wise to use the nature that boosts the pokemon’s weaker offensive stat in order to make it slightly more balanced. Thought it might reduce the risk of it running up against a wall if it’s forced to use an attack of that type.

Charge is to punish moves like fly, protect or even switches for example ...still kind of useless for sure but it is slightly different from attacking twice

I think all moves which force an enemy mon out are in the lowest priority bracket(or second lowest?). makes sense considering that otherwise a fast mon with roar or similar could just switch the opponent for free, deleting stat boosts and effectively eliminating their turn, because they haven't moved yet.

I'm a big fan of Manectric, even appearance wise. I'm not entirely sure why, though, but I want to say it's because of the game cube games. I also enjoy that it learns Fire moves in later gens, giving it a small niche as an Electric type with natural Fire coverage.

So I thought I might have found an interesting strategy for Manectric when thinking about strategies from older gens. I was going to suggest that you use Substitute + Petaya Berry for the Steven fight. Substitute would allows Manectric to safely shield itself from Skarmory on turn 1, allowing you to bring the Substitute into whatever Pokemon comes out next. Then, if you haven't activated Petaya Berry, use Substitute to guarantee that you activate it, allowing you to KO the Metagross with +1 Thunder. The problem? Petaya Berry is locked behind an event in Generation 3, which probably means it's not available in your runs. Substitute is available on the rooftop of the Department Store, which still should be useful against Steven's Skarmory (hoping that Scott uses this strategy sometime!) HOWEVER, Liechi Berry is available on Mirage Island, which you could theoretically get in one of your runs if you do some RNG manipulation. Liechi Berry could be used similarly to Petaya Berry above, especially physical attackers who might need the damage boost against Steven's more physically-oriented team. Extremely specific I know, but it might be easier to just boost through Steven's team rather than survive his team's repeated attacks.

Kane trick is the standard early gen Electric type. Great at going first and hitting with Thunderbolt, but not much else.

Manectric was always on my team for these games. When it has access to flamethrower and hidden power ice, it makes this pokemon so much better. On a side note, do you have a link to your discord? I can't seem to find it anywhere on the channel or video descriptions.

I had to guess the idea would be to Charge if you think your opponent is going to Protect, so that you can do double damage the next turn

Mane trick looks like a mid-stage Pokémon that is supposed to evolve so that the cone unravels or flourishes into something else. The cone looks like it’s supposed to be a temporary stage of development.

Honestly I thought Naughty was a good choice - might help with Roxanne a bit. Though the attempt at Level 18 it left me hoping you would use Thunder Wave to try and stun the Nosepass; not a consistent strategy, but I figured it was worth a shot.

So, there are reasons you would use charge instead of using an electric move twice. For 1, it conserves PP of the attacking move. And for 2, in the event you get stuck in a healing loop...as you have been known to do against Wallace. If you see that you don't 1-shot on say, the Wailord, you know the next turn, and possibly the turn after that could be full restores if you again fail to knock it out. If you used Charge, you would only have to suffer through one full restore. Though arguably you want him to waste them on Wailord as well. It is sometimes advantageous to simply take a 'mon out in 1 damaging move instead of walking into the pitfall of healing loops.

What u could do for the endgame for steven is that u could get some ev reducing berries to reduce the uneeded EVs u have so that u can use vitamins or do a small grind for the necessary evs for fights like this. It is kinda underrated but i believe it may lead to u having more consistent fights in the long run. Also HP ice will be the best overall just due to how gd the boltbeam combo is. Also consider a brave/quiet manetric since any excess speed is wasted

As someone who got into the series relatively late (Sinnoh and a bit of FRLG 15 years ago), I have no strong feelings towards Manectric. That said, I think its 105 Speed and Special Attack make it more than strong enough as a final evolution in a traditional playthrough, although its shallow movepool makes it more difficult to do a solo run with. Speaking of movepool, I was surprised that it doesn't get Flamethrower and Overheat since it does in every subsequnet game. Flamethrower would've really helped with Steven!

I love Manectric. I personally think it looks more cool than silly 😅 I’ve used it on my original team back in Ruby. I just love all the doggo Pokémon. Bonus: when ORAS came out, I encountered a shiny electrike with perfect IV’s in Sp.Atk and Speed, it’s shiny is black and yellow and it’s awesome! 🤩

13:13 - This thing just reminds me of Buu Saga Super Saiyan Vegeta. Also, I agree that this thing looks like a mid-stage evolution. It's not grand enough like Arcanine or fearsome enough like Houndoom.
