Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
-- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

For a bit of fun - Magnitude 10 has BP 150. Being underground means that is doubled. It has a quad weakness and STAB. That magnitude against the Camerupt therefore had an effective base power total of 150 * 2 * 4 * 1.5 = 1800 .

Scott, just so you know, there is a move tutor in the sootopilos Pokémon center that will teach double edge, so you don't have to wait till lv 63. Also, those magnitude 10s are crazy. It's literally a 5% chance to roll that.

The reason you beat the 2nd Geodude on Roxanne in one hit is maybe partially damage rolls, but also because you levelled up from 13 to 14 and your Attack stat increased from 40 to 44 (insane for just 1 level). Even though it's not a damage rounding threshold the attack stat increase still matters.

So Scott since you have done this multiple times at this point I am going to list the types that hit both the skarmory and Claydol neutrally when you are using earthquake. Ice, Fire, and Water. You may note that none of these are physical types and that is correct. No physical type pairs with earthquake against Steven’s team to hit for at least neutral damage so you either need 3 attacks or need to go mixed with earthquake. Otherwise you are going to keep getting walled by either the Skarmory or the Claydol when running earthquake. For additional reference Fighting type hits 5 of the 6 for neutral damage which means any move that hits the Claydol neutrally is fine. This is partially why fighting types are so dominant against him.

In Winona's gym you can skip the first of the two double battles by pushing from the right side to the left instead of from the left side up, the Bird Keeper's vision range is short enough that he won't see you and you can skip both him and the other trainer there. To be fair Aggron is very hard to use in Hoenn. I love the metal Dino but I remember it being almost dead weight on my team for key battles, I tried to use it multiple times with all kinds of sets. It's a more solid team player than a solo runner, lets you switch in on a resist and then switch to a flying or ghost type. It's actually good in Gen 6 and onwards, as the last few games really favour the steel type (and/or fairy).

Sorry this one didn't turn out the way you wanted it to. Enjoyed the vid, even though I was hoping Aggron would do better. A few things to consider that might improve Aggron's performance next time: 1. Obviously more efficient routing. Now that you know where it hits walls, you can plan for them, and you can avoid back tracking (like Brawly) more easily. 2. Looking into a nature that drops Def and boosts Sp. Atk or Speed. Aggron has so much Def, and access to Iron Defense, that the reduction doesn't matter, but the crazy type coverage would be a huge help. Ice Beam and Thunderbolt can take out a ton of problem mons all throughout the playthrough. Flamethrower or Fire Blast/EQ/Double Edge/Iron Defense(Rest?) @Shell Bell might be an answer to Steven. Keep up the good work!

I love Aggron's design so I very often had one in my Hoenn teams, but I definitely share your frustration with it: despite a massive 110 base Attack, it always feels like it struggles to deal a lot of damage unlike Rhydon, due to no STAB on Earthquake and very poor Steel and Rock moves. It just doesn't have a strong, reliable STAB move unlike most slow bulky Pokémon until it learned Head Smash next gen (and then Heavy Slam a bit later).

Great video! I had an idea for your gym/elite four battle transitions. I like how before the champion, all of Wallace's pokemon are shown before the battle screen shows. It would be cool if, for example, the Wailord sprite is animated to resize to fit it's location as it appears when the battle starts. I think this would be a slick and seamless transition. Aggron has pretty much everything going against it for a modern Pokemon endgame: no offensive setup, no great STAB move, no good recovery, Earthquake weakness, laughably ineffecient stats. Imagine if 60 of that Defense went into SpA so it could confidently use that sweet coverage or SpD so Water isn't such a problem. Also the classic Rock problem of only being allowed to boost its already-more-than-sufficient stat. It's frustrating that a Slow growth behemoth only has cool factor to reward you for the trouble of raising it.

Honestly, I think for solo challenges you mostly want to use your Pokémon as mixed attackers (physical and special), especially up until Gen 3 when move types are exclusively one or the other. Your Pokémon need to be versatile and ready to take out all threats, including ones that are defensively strong on one side or the other, and that have a variety of weaknesses and resistances. I think people who are telling you otherwise are drawing too much on their competitive experience where mixed attackers are generally not great, but then you have a full team of 6 in that so your Pokémon do not need to be jack of all trades like in solo runs. Gen 4 might favour Adamant and Modest builds though given the Physical/Special split, will be interesting to see when you do start playing Platinum.

My own Aggron (when it was an Aron) was meant to be a mere HM slave until I get got the Pokémon I wanted on my team, Castform, and yet the metal/rock lizard won my heart and has become one of my favourite Gen 3 Pokémon. Naturally, I'm looking forward to this solo challenge. 0:52 - So very doubtful we'll be seeing your Aggron going with Thunderbolt to deal with Wallace or Ice Beam to deal with Drake. Probably for the best, as whilst it has access to those moves, it'll probably work better going with a hard hitting STAB Steel or Rock move in such situations. 3:05 - I did wonder whether you would manage to reach Metal Claw given your Slow growth rate. I assume you didn't skip any trainers, so that slow growth really was an issue for this early bit. Given Titanic's sheer strength, you might have been able to plough through Roxanne's team with Mud Slap and Headbutt. 5:52 - I'm not surprised how strong that Mud Shot was but the sheer damage the Water Gun caused was a surprise. 8:33 - It is rather funny that Manectric has Howl and only one move to take advantage of it. An it's not like the situation has gotten better for it after the Physical/Special split; electric physical moves aren't exactly the most common. 11:38 - Man, you really had some rotten luck against Maxie. The inability to set-up early because of Mightyena's Sand-Attack is a right nuisance. Shame Titanic here doesn't have access to either Swift or even Faint Attack. 15:37 - Feels like there is plenty of obstacles that could be addressed in a second run with Aggron. 19:02 - Love the Magikarp trainer art here. An it's a fun little story. He's doing quite well given his Gyarados are all underlevelled compared to his surroundings. 22:38 - Man, if only that Aerial Ace was available before the fight with Maxie. That would have certainly made life easier. 24:59 - Did you name your Aggron that just for the joke here? Wow; wasn't expecting it. Hilarious! 28:43 - The problem I feel with this run is the unfortunate case of things not going well for physical attackers. Aggron doesn't have access to reliable STAB moves; the Steel moves lack types it hits hard against as well as accuracy and Aggron lacks Rock moves. It's TM pool is oriented towards Special moves but the Pokémon has a low Special Attack and even lower given it's nature. 30:47 - Nice to see my own observation somewhat noted. I'm not sure I'd go with a Special Defence lowering nature, but I suppose the 4x weakness to Ground and Fighting makes you want to aim to raise Aggron's pitiful Speed to a somewhat higher level and avoid lowering Physical Defence. 32:57 - The Skarmory tends to be your biggest obstacle, so it's nice to see you take it down without issue. Shame Claydoll has been a consistent obstacle for you in this playthrough. 36:49 - Yeah... that would be a fitting term for it. Aggron did not do as well as expected. I believe it could do a lot better, but again, the lack of reliable STAB options and the presence of faster Earthquake users holds the Pokémon back. It certainly makes the far flung future prospect of you doing a second playthrough with Aggron really exciting though.

In a lot of videos you tend to mention funny looking back sprites, I always thought the shoulder guard for Aggron was a small arm 😂

I haven't got around to watching all your emerald runs, but one move you really need to make more use of is Substitute. So many pokemon can get a free substitute against the bad leads like the aqua/magma/Sidney MIghteyena's (blocks sand-attack and scary face, can't really do damage). Steven's Skarmory, and Drakes Shelgon. Aggron in particular with a +speed nature can outspeed everything but his Salamence (which can't damage him too well anyway) and can OHKO all the dragons except Kingdra with Ice beam (and you have double edge for that). It might be some gen 1 muscle memory, but Dig is not a good move at all in gen 3 either, too many things know magnitute and 60 base power and a two turn move is really bad. There is a rollout tutor in Mauville that can give lots of pokemon a free flannery fight. There is also a double edge tutor in Sootopolis that helps out rock head mons (like Aggron).

Very pedantic observation but I think the gen 3 E4 should at least have their aces beside their concept art, another great video anyway

this was a fun video but this one definitely needs to be revisited and retooled the way you do in the other gens. it feels like there is a lot of room to improve the play-through here. the presentation is great as always though

I think the Rock/Steel typing is similar to Electric/Steel typing. The main difference being rock is a better type for fire types and electric is better against water types.

FYI, pretty sure you can buy vitamins at the Slateport Market, which is way faster given less movement and no rival battle.

Yeah, aggron is a subtle mon, theres a lot of substantial weaknesses and a lot of unusual ways to play!

It's also probably the case that magnitude straight up doesnt undergo standard damage rolls, its probably a 'power 0 move' internally. May or may not be subject to super effective calcs, which i think would force its selection here ~60% of the time (specifically cuz its 4x effective!)

When you were stuck at the E4/Steven Stone, would it have been worth trying blackout training against them?

It's kind of out of reach, but you had dragon claw available for Drake 🙂 not like it would do much against Wallace tho... And Ice beam/blizzard are great coverage options against Steven: Claydol and Cradily are usually the best walls of his team, and the move counters them. Skarmory doesn't have great Sp Def either

1:51 I thought you'd name her Titania. 9:58 Likely because it figured Magnitude 4 would come up in the pre-move calc. 15:26 Aggron's attack is decent but isn't that great, and Slaking is physically pretty bulky. 27:17 Replacing Rest with Substitute would be pretty helpful, I think. Substitute is a great move in Gen 3, even blocking Intimidate.

Where was Brick Break? Feel like that could have helped somewhere. Maybe just used to seeing that move be used in competitive sets.

Hey Scott! Love how passionate you are about your productions and I’m especially enjoying your investment into those little techs you implemented over time to make the experience even more… mathematical? 😅 But could you please (!) start taking the rival’s ace’s ability into account? It’s hard to watch how you had the three shot against Brandon’s Marshtomp at hand (around minute 6) and instead of doing chip damage on turn two you triggered its torrent ability and got wrecked 😐 pretty sure you would’ve had survived a non torrent boosted watergun. 🤓 Anyways, thanks for the content 🙏🏼

Aggron *is* Rhydon; Gen 3 was supposed to have been a Gen 5 style soft reboot, but it had to be fluffed out with old mons because of time issues. That's why you have so many mons filling the same roll/design philosophy; Gulpin/Grimer (right by each other in the dex, iirc), Pikachu/Plusle-Minun (far more similar than the Gen 2 Pika clone) and Aggron/Rhydon (now with baby!) being the ones that come to mind immediately.
