Excited to have seen how this line worked for them. I'm in the States and have tried a couple of their products, including the gel and cream in this video though I have not tried the mousse. I wasn't very impressed with the products in my hair either. I began my wavy transition around the beginning of the year. I've had better results with other lines. I never knew my hair was curlier until I was pregnant with my daughter who is now 18. My mother had pin straight hair, but my father's hair is wavy and my grandmother's hair was very curly. When I was a kid, my hair was like my mom's, super straight. Looking back, I think my hair's texture began to change from super straight to wavy back in high school, but I just didn't recognize what my hair was doing. My current profile pic here was just taken last week after 8 months of actually wearing my waves and I love my hair. I began with very short hair. I had a pixie cut over the holidays and have been growing it out since. I would not have lasted without this channel to help me. Thank you

I totally agree with you on these products! The gel is very drying on me and gives little to no hold. The cream is great but not if your hair is super dry. The mousse, however, is one of my favorites in humidity. I use it with just a cream and not layered with a gel and it works great for volume and strong hold!

Gotta say this whole line is 50/50. The mousse, the deep conditioner mask, the cleansing “oil”(basically a hella light shampoo) and the leave in conditioner spray are the only products worth buying for me. Those products are super nice and work really really well on my hair, but the rest of them are just meh or total trash for me.

If I need a lazy routine, I use the curl smith air dry cream and the NYM curl talk curl cream together then let air dry. Putting the two together I find helps with the moisture/protein balance that you kinda miss using only the curl talk line.
@jessicagalyon58403 жыл бұрын
Hi, my hair hates protein. I was looking at the curlsmith air dry & the Ulta chick came & recommended the hold me softly balm or the in shower styler. So.. after standing there for 5 min, I decided to not get anything lol. I love the NYM cream but I can’t use it often bc my protein sensitivity. It’s only product w protein so far that I can use at all. Do you find the air dry cream similar? Have you tried the other ones by curlsmith?
@hayfeverray3 жыл бұрын
@@jessicagalyon5840 the air dry creme is totally different from the NYM. I find it to be super moisturizing, I has lots of slip so it's great for detailing and also helps the hair feel super soft for me. I've got coarse, bleach damaged, wavy hair and it loves the air dry creme. It's nice because it really doesn't weigh it down. I use the air dry creme and the nym curl defining creme together because I find the nym does define really well, but it doesn't give enough moisture. I've also used the bond curl repair treatment from curl Smith and really love it! I want to try more of their products but haven't gotten my hands on them yet.

Oh...and when it's been windy and rainy all day and my hair still looks good....you KNOW it's a good product!

You are SO amazing, like just the analysis omg! Last August, I became a HUGE fan of this line, and I was using all the products but by January, I felt that my hair did not feel like how I like - soft, conditioned, flexible and I really feel the cream does not work as well on higher textures. My bsf has a loose wavy type and she personally loves it, and it always gives her gorgeous results, so this really isn't to say it's a bad product, it just will not give everyone the result they want. I feel like the things you said really voiced the experiences I had with the stylers from this range but I can't help but wonder how these products would perform on Amanda's hair though... My personal favorites from Curl Talk are the 3-in-1 conditioner, the leave-in & the mousse, and you might really enjoy those conditioners if you can get a hold of them! Awesome review

I haven’t tried the mousse in a while bc I have other mpussss currently in my stash, but it was BOMB, especially for refreshing. I tried out the gel and I HATED IT. Quite drying, nothing very special on the definition front, and no hold the following day. I also hated the curl cream, since there was absolutely no moisture for my high porosity coils. My mom, who has high porosity 3a-b curls, also was not wowed by it. Also I’m completely agree with valuing results over ingredients. So many of us curly people get super scared of certain ingredients (which also leaves us vulnerable to companies that base its marketing over fear-mongering about ingredients) without knowing that they aren’t harmful and can even be beneficial to curly hair. My high porosity hair LOVES sealing ingredients, so silicones are my jam.

I have 3c/3b curls. I’ve been using these products for a while. I agree with needing extra hydration with the curl cream and gel which have been my go to products to give me at least a full week of hold and humidity control. However, I have to have to use a leave in or I will only get a max of 3 days before I’m a frizz ball. My go to leave in is Moroccanoil. I also use the tiniest bit of the conditioner as a leave in to switch things up every so often. I do prefer the mousse for humidity control but find it doesn’t give me the hold that I like. I seal/scrunch out cast with Verb Ghost Oil. Btw… it’s because of you that I have fallen in love with the leave in and oil. Thank you for the amazing and extremely thorough content you provide!!

Your mom’s hair looks so good!!!!🔥🔥🔥 I have a question…I’ve heard you say to layer products from light to heavier but I see you did the mousse last. Should mousse generally be the last styling product?
@nova44763 жыл бұрын
i’ve only tried the mousse & it definitely HOLDS. i always have a problem with gels not holding but with their mousse i need to not be so heavy handed! thanks for the review 💕🙏🏾

I've been using this product for a few months now. I will say I use Cantu Leave-In conditioner and make sure to work that through with my head upside down and scrunch along the way. Then I go in with the NYM Curl Gel, same way, and I can keep this hair for at least 4-5 days. BUT my hair is thick, with a mix of Puerto Rican curly hair and smooth Mexican hair. Mine holds up well as long as I use the Cantu with it, otherwise, yes I get ALOT more frizz without Cantu.

Thank you for this honest review! I was disappointed in this product line and surprised that so many reviewers raved about it. I have been using Ecru New York Defining Styling Potion which my hairdresser recommended and I love it. My hair is more like your "seester's" but I would welcome seeing a review of their products. Love your videos!

I looooove your videos, i think i watched every single one twice XD Thank you Mell for those Videos! Could you make a video about how to fix a bad short haircut? You would help me and problably a lot of other people who had bad experiences at salons! I did a big chop end of 2020 and i kind of liked it but my hair still was a little uneven at the front and I didn't want to continue experimenting myself so I went to a hairstylist almost a year later after letting it grow out and asked for discret layers and let me tell you, he did a second "big chop", which was so unnecessary because I didn't have breakage or split ends. I litterally cried 5 days in a row because I can't believe a professional destroyed my hair like that. He cut my hair as if it was straight, my curls are very tight in the front, just like mells and he "evened" it out and now that it's curly it looks so wrong. And the "layers" are looking like two "levels". It looks so bad, i'm just putting it into a bun. My Ends are so thin and I feel like I'm getting a lot of fairy knots and my hair tangles a lot more than it used to. I lost hope in finding a good hairstylist. I think I'm going to continue watching mells videos about how to trim/style my own curly hair, I had better experiences with that then with going to a salon. - A curly girl from Germany

I LOVE Not Your Mother's Curl Talk line. I have fine, high porosity, 2c/3a, dense hair. My hair loves protein and this line is great for that, though I haven't used the mousse yet. I don't cocktail, but instead I layer Knot Today leave-in conditioner, the curl talk cream, use my Denman brush, curl talk gel, and then diffuse. I think it has great hold/definition and makes my hair feel really nice, and I'm in FL where you basically feeling like you're in hell most days of the year. 😂 Also, the deep conditioning masque from this line is wonderful!

The kinky coils in this product is what works amazingly for me! Not the curl cream. You need to try it! I use that and the mousse, and also the hair scalp scrub once every 2 weeks.

Oh Mel your momma is so beautiful and what a sweetheart! She seems so quiet and reserved compared to you and seester. 😉😉 Looks like a great family and fun vacation. This old momma is so glad I found you at 63 and 3 months into my CGM journey. I have long dyed blonde, 2a-2c fine, low density hair, it seems balanced enough. ?🤔 Thank you for all the great advice. You always give me a much needed laugh and a lot of needed information. You were recommended by Swavy Curly Courtney btw. I'm a former licensed manicurist in the state of Maryland and I've worked in salons but this modified CGM can be so confusing.❤️ Geeze I forgot to say I loved your momma's hair!

Hi Mell, I agree with other posters, try the line again without the gel, just the cream and then the mousse. This line is HG for me EXCEPT the gel and the conditioner. I just ordered the new hard hold gel to see if it's an improvement. I have high porosity hair, fine texture, 3b curls.

What is the difference between Mousse & Foam? It’s so fun to see Mumsey with her curls! She’s beautiful. I wasn’t a fan of NYM curl talk either. I didn’t like the smell & it felt weird on me. I do really like NYM Naturals Curl Defining Tahitian Gardenia & Mango Butter. Their cream is a little oily if you’re not careful. I like the shampoo, conditioner, & leave in. Great slip! They don’t have a gel or mousse, so I have to use something else. The fragrance isn’t overpowering & it is moisturizing but not too much.

Mell would you consider trying Not Your Mother’s purple shampoo/conditioners? They were the first I tried and used to take care of my highlighted curls. I really liked them and saw a difference vs when I’d use regular (sulfate free) products, but since your hair is colored too I’d love to see what you think about purple/blue/etc shampoos in general!!!

I've gone back to using NYM after trying some other lines. Using both the CurlTalk leave in and defining cream work well for me, but not their gel. Looking forward to trying the mousse and also giving the new hard hold gel a go when it's in my area. Thanks for the tips on cocktailing vs layering!!

What's the difference between curl mousse and foam? Is it just the consistency? Or hold, ingredients, etc?

Yes!! I have the mousse but have always wondered about their other products!!! Thank you, Mell!!! Also I do have a question, my wavy hair is really long, and really prone to tangling, is there anything I can do to make it less likely to form knots?

I use the curl cream followed by a little bit of gel scrunched in, then I plop. After 10ish min of plopping, I add mousse, followed by gel for a cast. And it's been working great for me. For ref I have 2a-2c hair, lower porosity. Thin strands, but lots of it!

I agree with your assessment. When I use the NYM Curl Talk, I also use the shampoo and conditioner. I love the Raspberry Tea smell. The conditioner I also use as a leave in, then the curl cream and mouse, which is my favorite, since I live in South Carolina. I only use the gel in the winter, when humidity is low.💜

Layering is much better I think. But I have to admit, I've used "Not Your Mother's" products and I was not all that impressed. In fact, the shampoo kind of dried my 3A/B hair out a bit. I use the "Living Proof" shampoo/conditioning combo despite its higher price point, and sometimes Texture ID shampoo/conditioner combo, along with a curling mask which keeps my locks looking good. When I want a gel in there especially in the summertime, I use "Biotera" defining gel. Great video Mel; love you guys... look forward to your videos all the time! Perhaps your next video can feature "Texture ID" shampoo combo. It's a great product.
