Yuuumaaaa Vector is my all time favorite Yu-Gi-Oh villain, personally. The dude is literally evil and manipulation on steroids. And, in his own twisted way, makes those traits almost seem fashionable. Almost like you'd want to pick them up yourself at the nearest clothing store. And that's not to mention how downright ABSOLUTELY APPEALING he makes absolute bloody mental psychosis sound as a personality trait. Like hot damn, everything anyone would want in a villain, and THEN some, times a thousand. Zexal had it's flaws....oh did it EVER have it's flaws, but Vector ALMOST makes up for them all just by himself. He is just an art form in and of himself.

In minor defense of Vector's overall personality, I feel the greatest culprit is, of course, Don Thousand. While the other Emperors went and died as a result of some of Thousand's machinations, Vector was the only one who was directly corrupted by Don Thousand, and that stuck with him all the way up to his reincarnation. Yes, his dad killing his mom was traumatic, but the Don outright admits to that being his fault... of course, Thousand's grip on Vector's mind is so great he outright _laughs off his own tragic backstory._ It takes until YUUUMAAA reaches out to him and states he'll gladly die with him so he won't be alone that that hold seems to finally drop as he accepts his fate... although the fact he still TA-DA-DAs in the final scene suggests that's just part of who he is now, I dunno. Still a fun villain, though.

I feel like any discussion of Vector is incomplete without bringing up that Vector doesn't torture and backstab people just for the hell of it, he does it to torture his sensitive side. He only acts the way he does to convince himself he's the type of evil who would kill his parents because it's less painful than accepting how much of a monster his father was. Every act of cruelty he commits against other is to push his potential friends away and try to hide from the reality that he's a sensitive person in a lot of pain and doesn't feel safe trusting people with that pain. that's why he hates Yuma and Astral so much. Their trust in each other despite all circumstances challenges his belief that he has to be this way, so their bond must be broken and they must be destroyed

One villain I did enjoy in Yu-Gi-Oh is Ai from VRAINS. He's actually very tragic - thrust into a situation where there is no happy ending for himself or Yusaku, the one human he loves and cherishes. Thus comes up with a plan to solidify his resolve and accept fate: Duel Yusaku where if he wins, the plan halts and Ai dies. If Yusaku loses, the plan continues and Yusaku dies but so does Ai since the plan requires him to spread out his data. So literally, a lose-lose situation. One could say he could just NOT go along with the plan, but he unfortunately can't given that his existence would bring upon the end of humanity.
@ChangelingRain3 күн бұрын
If anything, it's even more tragic than that - he assumes Lightning is completely correct, but right at the end he reveals he _never actually tried simulating out his duel with Yusaku,_ so it's open-ended if he would actually cause the end of humanity or if it's specifically _him existing without Yusaku_ that would.

tbh, Vector is probably my favorite villain of all time. not only of Yugioh but of... well everything. the amount of trolliness he uses in his plans, everything you explained and you haven't even explained the best part about him: his battle vs Nash. (spoilers for that in a bit) He became powerful enough to absorb Don Thousand, and when he was attacked by his number monster, he saw what happened to him in his past. the other Emperors switched allegiance after this. Vector used this to his adventage by seeming that he would indeed give up and let Nash attack him, while after that completely turning it on him again and reabsorbing Don Thousand. That's just amazing writing in my opinion

People sleep on Zexal and I think it has more to do with Yuma's English VA and English censorship of the anime series (cutting out vital episodes because of either death or religious symbology). The fact that the Water themed duelist pack went from Shark to Mako Tsunami is a prime example of this. Shark as a character and duelist is leagues better and more important than Mako who's there to lose in the early stages of two tournament arcs to some main cahracters.
@TheJoethud222 күн бұрын
I disagree heavily. The English dub is peak.

My thoughts were people never took Yuma seriously since he's not amongst the mature Yugioh protagonists.
@otterfire47122 күн бұрын
@@thatman666 Yuma is honestly up there in terms of protagonists of Yu-Gi-Oh and he does actually mature and take things seriously when friends are in danger. Yuma at the start of the series didn't quite take proper care about learning to play the game well, but still loved the game. His duel with Shark while he was making errors was him trying his best despite logical errors. Well before the World Duel Carnival, Yuma was serious when there were heavy stakes riding on the duels, win or lose, and they were dealt with accordingly. Through Astral's guidance in dueling paired with the training he did for the World Duel Carnival, he prepared to fight people like Kaite. Even after WDC, Yuma was serious with the Barian situation and was doing his best with what he had. With regards to his journey as a duelist, I'd put him on par with Joey Wheeler in that they start as talentless losers who didn't really understand deck construction to dueling legends of their generation.

Fun Fact: Vector LOST every single duel he ever had except his second to last duel in the show. And I bring that up to say that it just goes to show that you dont NEED for the main villain to be this unstoppable dueling god to be a compelling character and an S-tier villain. Nobody, and I men NOBODY, will tell you their favorite thing about Vector is that he is a good duelist. (cuz he's not). But what they WILL say, is that he was an impactful character and a very well-written villain. Also @Mangakamen missed an opportunity to mention the fact that both Vector and Zorc/Yami Bakura both play shadow games along with the similarities of their deck. Stellar Video Tho my dude.

A bit of an unrelated side note, but since you mentioned about the weirdness of the Number cards before they land into the possession of characters, it seems there's lore explanation for why they take the forms they have (which I assume it's not fully explained in the anime and rather through complementary material and the manga counterpart). So all Number cards start out as blank cards, with nothing on them. And the moment these cards fall into the possession of someone on Earth, they quickly take form based on the known qualities of the person (example being the Cob Ship Number card from the manga, taking that form because its user was a proud chef). And they have the peculiar trait that, if the person they fall possession to is fully aware of their nature as Number cards, the person can have full control over the form they take, shown by the series of Sin Spider Number cards that are all technically the same card but willfully changed by its user

Yuma starting off as an idiot thats just plain poopy booty cheeks at a game he loves is one of the biggest reasons why zexal is my favorite. Out of every single spinoff, yuma is literally the only one that isnt some 5000IQ savant at the game from episode 0
@WhiteFangofWar3 күн бұрын
Good analysis. With so many spin-offs it's hard to create a compelling villain in a series all about children's card games, but Vector pulls it off with gusto. Just as surprising is his reaction to learning that he was previously manipulated by Don Thousand into launching a bloody war with other kingdoms and killing many of his own subjects: He pretends to become traumatized and suicidal, seemingly giving Nasch a way to beat him easily and destroy him as punishment for his deeds... *except* that this is all another lie and he was just pretending to feel remorse to get his opponent to play into his hands. Another gambit, subverting the previous pattern where all the Barian Emperors change their tune once they recover their hidden memories. Pretending to have an emotional breakdown just to mess with someone. The ultimate troll.

One of the most fun parts of zexal in my opinion that helps it stand out is that the main character deck ACTUALLY CHANGED. Like we would see him pull out the number cards he won in his following duels. Honestly that was one of the most hype parts of zexal (since unlike say GX that also has some deck switching it was A) a drip feed insted of the protagonists bassicly getting a new starter pack and B) ther was a stronger emotional connection since we saw how mutch of a pain in the ass it was to EARN these cards. Wish more Yu-Gi-Oh series did this honestly!)

Love the comparison of Vector to Bakura, but one correction: it was Marik’s interference in that Slifer duel that brought injured main Bakura out. As much of a schemer as he was, Yami Bakura still had a streak of pride and declared that he didn’t want to win like that (plus claimed he still needed Bakura’s body) so he took control back and told Yugi/Atem to attack him and tanked the loss like a maniacal champ.

Zexal is absolutely one of my favourite Yu-Gi-Oh! series, it’s definitely top 3 for me and Vector might just be my favourite villain in all of Yu-Gi-Oh!, a massive part on why I love Zexal is because of Vector, the way he manipulated Yuma to the point where Yuma basically had a mental breakdown and damaged Yuma and Astral’s bond to the point that they later struggled to Zexal morph, he made a lasting impact on the protagonist shows just how effective he was as a villain. Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal honestly has some of the best characters in all of Yu-Gi-Oh! like it has the best rival with the GOATs Kite and Shark, the only rival that hasn’t ever lost to the protagonist, a rival that started off as a true threat intimidating threat, like duels against Kite felt like fights for survival, you weren’t just losing a duel, but then he turns into one of your greatest homies, one that would literally die for you. Then there’s Shark, a rival that started out as a generic bully and you’d think that’s all he would ever be but then he stayed being relevant and becomes the final antagonist holding the fate of all his people in his hands against his best friend who is also holding the fate of other people in his hands, no matter who winds one side dies but neither want to be the one to win because they homies fr, until Shark pulls out the ultimate homie move and sac himself so his homie could live. Yuma is also one of the better protagonist IMO, he starts off as goober that only took Ls because though all of the battles that battered him physically, mentally, and emotionally he came out on the other side as a God duelist even on his own, like I was actually proud of him when he was able to perform a shining draw on his own. Honestly the youngest and sweetest Yu-Gi-Oh! protagonist probably went through the most mind and soul crushing duels in the franchise only really matched by Jaden. Zexal is a GOAT’d series and hate that it gets so much hate, or really treat it like the black sheep when Arc-V is right there.

The thing with Bakura’s Battle City Duel against Yugi is that it was MARIK who made Ryo come back to the forefront, with Bakura actually coming back to take the potential brunt of the blow in service of his plan.

Vector will always be my favorite villain, and to think he was just like Yuma in the beginning, couldn't stand the thought of fighting and violence at all. Then his bastard of a father and Don Thousand soured his mindset in less than a moment's notice. He really cared for his Mother a lot, seeing his Father kill her right in front of him, no wonder he always felt so damaged. I always felt bad for how he ended up becoming a villain, but damn his backstory was insane. Don Thousand literally turned him from a Prince of Tragedy to Prince of Madness in less than a few seconds. Also, we need a total makeover for the Umbral Horrors, Vector deserves better than this. We need new chaos forms for his Masquerades and Doom/Chaos Chimera Dragon.

Responding to the Zexal hate I saw Zexal when I wss a teenager and I liked it, as an adult I can understand why some people would be turned off of it since it looks like the goofest of all the Yugioh series at face value. I appreciate the risk this series took with doing the whole hero and spirit companion like in the originial series. I think the series best aspect is what I call the One Piece effect Where its able to take characters with goofy designs and put them in both series and sentimental moments. Yuma for all his childish behavior goes through a lot of hardships.

That's me enjoying Kamen Rider in a nutshell. Some suits are dumb in design yet the story can be compelling.

Seeing Vector for the first time in Zexal threw me for a loop because it was crazy to me that a character like him was created for one of the Yu-Gi-Oh iterations. I’m super glad he does exist because he’s just so deliciously evil. One of my favorite villains of all time. ^_^

Dude literally goaded Nasch's sister & best friend into realizing he's betrayed them, and then when they try to do something about it, he traps Nasch and makes him watch Vector kill them both. THEN when Nasch duels him he goes out of his way to summon their cards and make him destroy them lol. Such delicious pettiness. Also: YUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMAAAAAAAAA

I do kind of wish we got more of Shingetsu as a Barian, just so that the reveal was more heartbreaking. Or at least more duels with him.

I was only half paying attention (have some real world stuff going on) but Zexal was meant to be almost like a reboot as this is the only series other than the OG that started with a Manga first. I think it took on more of its own identity as it went on. Also great video, always love villain talk

Vector is definetely my favorite of the emperors, he is just so fun. BTW will you ever talk about the mangas? like the GX, ZEXAL or R mangas? would be really cool

I'd also say that Vector was a great villain just because of how objectively terrifying he was to me as a kid, and not just because of the downright uncanny nightmare faces he'd pull with that "expressiveness" that even his Barian face projects. Over the course of Zexal, he manipulates, he possesses, he tortures, he betrays, and he kills. Even Astral acknowledges that he was a large part of the reason why Yuma stopped finding dueling fun, because wherever and whenever Vector was involved, it was all about survival and the survival of his friends, most of whom being dead by the darkest hour. While maybe not outright villains, I'd certainly say that the other Barians are all Noble Demons or Anti-Villains done right, even if the ways they qualify differ from person to person. Most examples of this are primarily them not being as actively malevolent as one would think that demonic aliens trying to destroy an entire world would be; hell, if you give even Dumon -- the acting leader of the Barians since they started becoming an active threat -- a chance to really think about it, none of them even know why they're fighting each other, and if not for Don Thousand, they probably wouldn't be fighting at all.

another note on zexal being an homage to DM: the entire concept of chaos vs order is prevalent in egyptian mythos
