Gooseworx already being a proven animator and composer is just the cherry on top of The Amazing Digital Circus. She's already created plenty of fast but well paced shorts and The Amazing Digital Circus is the culmination of her years of hard work, as well as being her first real attempt at writing characters seriously without being in equal parts a joke, and we still have six more episodes of the show to watch

Top that all off that there is a former animator from Bluesky studio working on the show too. Who has done amazing work and animation. With merchandise and views Gooseworx probably has comfort in production cost to be able to slow things down to improve the animation. The scripts are all ready locked, but the animators have done their own jokes and touches. Like in episode two with the two alligator brothers are dancing in the background while in the foreground there is a deep conversation happening.

Valen due to hatred forgot an important lesson from his mentor about checking the background of his source. It is very obvious that the mad scientist is a Granute(or at least working for them). He know too much, has access to a Granute organ,... + the way the mentor was killed is suspicious: Granute usually kidnap people alive to be turned into Dark Treats, they have no reason to kill someone on the spot(which make the victim unusable as ingredient). This as all a set up to make Valen agree to be experimented on. This is a tragedy: A person downfall due to their own decision/inherent flaw

This is my favorite trope(story wise at least) of a character who either starts out broken and we slowly get knowledge on what caused this or a character who becomes broken due to an event we get to witness and see them get worse. It’s part of why I constantly talk about shows like Murder Drones, Inanimate Insanity, and Bojack Horseman because they tackle broken characters, especially main characters, so well I don’t know much on Karen Rider but will fully admit to almost crying during Kinger’s backstory. He was already my favorite character but this solidified it
@theownerofthisaccount25212 ай бұрын
Since Bojack is incredibly popular with the analysis of his character and the possible finale for II is Saturday, I’ll talk about MePhone4 for a broken character I love. Admittedly, there are MANY broken characters in this show since around S2 ep 8, it became a lot darker. Suitcase, Lightbulb, Fan, etc. some break through this and grow while others get consumed but the one character everything goes back to is MePhone, the host. This will have spoilers for ep 13 of the second season but I’m not spoiling anything beyond that because they are genuinely great twists. Also why I’m only focusing on MePhone as a broken character and not the contestants. So the premise of the show started out as a sentient phone hosting a survivor show for other sentient objects to try to win a million dollars. Slowly over time he’s attacked by other newer phones and there are mentions of his creator and father, Steve Cobbs, who we eventually meet in episode 8. However, MePhone’s memories of him are fuzzy and when he is faced with a painting of him, he’s fueled by hatred and eventually passes out. This leads to episode 13 where where we learn that under Cobbs’s care, he was emotionally abused and forced to use his powers of creation for him or else. His only form of happiness was eating food on the couch and watching reality shows, which he became obsessed over to the point of not doing his duties. While sneaking around, MePhone found one of Cobbs’s earlier creations, 3GS, cracked and locked in a closet while the latter still had sentience and was screaming “Cobbs don’t” repeatedly. This caused MePhone to finally break, steal a MePad, and fled to an empty Forest away from civilization where he stored these memories in crystals and hid them in a cave. Afterwards, to escape his negative thoughts so he would never have to confront his past, he created his own reality show where he could create any zany outcome and have people compete for him. However, not only does he slowly begin cracking under the harder parts of managing a show especially when the others start losing the will to continue playing, but he begins treating them just as his father treated him and the other to the point of even locking away eliminated contestants in a closet. And when his past starts coming back to bite him, he would rather run away and risk the lives of the contestants than face it himself because he’s that afraid to even acknowledge his father and just how hurt he truly is, as well as willing to sever ties with even those he is close to if they have any association with Cobbs, even if they didn’t even know they did. That’s as far as I can see without giving away really major things but he’s just one of many interesting yet broken characters in the show. As for Bojack…oh boy that’s a lot to unpack but I highly recommend it to people as long as you are willing to slog past the first 6 episodes because of you love stories about broken characters, that might be for you since that’s a major part of the premise

What keeps surprising me about Digital Circus is how it expertly uses the juxtaposition between it's wacky setting and the dark stuff that happens to make the more human moments feel like they have more weight. Every single one so far feels like a moment the characters had to fight and claw for trying to survive the madness around them. As for Kamen Rider Gavv, I'm honestly scared for Hanto, it seems like he's letting his hatred of the Granulte's blind him and becoming just as monster as Stomic Ink and considering the main theme of this show seems to be the struggle to find true happiness...

Yup, Digital Circus benefits from the fact the characters immediately start in a very crappy situation, that being trapped in a digital prison they can't escape from with the looming threat of abstracting if they lose their sanity. This in turn allows us to explore how each character responds to said scenario, whether it's Optimism with Ragatha, Indifference like Zooble, Sarcasm with Jax or simply losing your grip on reality like Kinger. Because they are stuck in this world, whatever personal problems they had when they were human are irrelevant as they don't help them here.

I'm a huge fan of Vergil from DMC and Trunks from DBZ/S for this reason. Vergil in particular is my "Hanto" in the sense of being traumatized character that chose darkness- or in his case, power. He went through so much of his trauma as a child so he feels the need to be stronger than what he was. Unfortunately, his drive to distance himself from weakness pushes him to go to almost megalomaniacal extremes. He rips off his own son's arm, he frequently challenges those who he sees as obstacles, and he pushes away his brother (his only remainding family family member) with every single action he makes. He's trapped himself in a viscous cycle of internalized inadequacy and drive to improve himself beyond recognition. On the opposite spectrum, Trunks from DB Z and Super LITERALLY only has hope no matter what. I remember personally crying during the episodes in DBS where he was in the past and spent time with everyone there, particularly Gohan. He cried when he was in a healthy environment, he almost killed Goku on sight, and he is obviously riddled with nightmares whenever he rests. It's crazy to see the lengths he's capable of going to but doesn't due to seeing where such hubris would land him. He fights for hope and believes that even if he dies that hope will prevail.

Well I dont know if he is a 'Broken' Character per say but i can say that Grovyle from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky can possibly fit on the list. Dude came from a future in which Dialga is in a primal Feral state and the world is in a Time Paralyzed state. Most of the pokemon there most likely are either dead, feral themselves or just struggling. Who knows what kind of life Grovyle had when he was a treecko or during any point of his life before we see in him the game and sre introduced to him. But we do know that despite everything he still goes on with the hope that he can change the future and make it so that the Primal Dialga incident and the Paralysis of the World doesnt happen by returning the Time Gears to Temporal Tower even knowing he might disappear due to changing the future ESPECIALLY since the player character is(was) probably one of the last (or last few) surviving humans in not only that future timeline but probably in the Mystery Dungeon world. Special Episode 5 in Explorers of Sky 'In the Future of Darkness' expands of how much Grovyle holds onto that hope, even making former Enemies in Dusknoir and the Sableye into allies and friends despite the initial betrayal...Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky are the best entries In the Mystery Dungeon games and have some great stories and really are underrated

@CodeBlazeFate2 ай бұрын
Kinger's moment and reveal with Pomni was incredibly sweet, and has made him an arguable favorite of mine for the series. As for your question, I'd say one of my favorite overarching developments of a broken character is Ragna the Bloodedge from Blazblue. His foster home war burnt to the ground, his foster mother was killed, his sister was kidnapped, and his brother cut his arm off in a fit of insanity, all in one fell swoop over 7 years before where the main story truly starts. Now a world-class fugitive fighting against an oppressive world government to get both answers and revenge regarding what happened, he fights with an incomprehensible abomination power whose vessel replaced his right arm. He often has to dispatch murakumo units, artificial life forms who at present, have been made in the image of what his sister would look like all grown up. The prospect revolts him so much that he actively throws a fit when one of them, Nu-13, tries to actually communicate with him and remind him of what he did to her last time he killed her. The closest he has to a friend is his master, and all of his other relationships, few as they even are, are aggressively strained. He's a miserable anti-hero protagonist with edgelord powers, frequently getting into pissing contests or being on the verge of tears, and he's usually in the dark about the true nature of things while often being treated like an idiot. And yet he's still able to find people to (begrudgingly) connect with, show off legitimate understanding and wisdom with other folks who are struggling, and both of these factors snowball in later Blazblue games, especially after a pivotal moment near the end of the 2nd game shows the true limitations of his revenge in the cruelest ways imaginable. He's still a pissy bitch even in later games, and somehow things keep getting more tragic for him, but his growth as a person becomes monumental and rewarding, and the way his story ends is honestly beautiful. I definitely have a fondness for characters like Guts or Batman, broken people who keep going in spite of it all, either for the people and community around them or because fighting is all they know/have left. Ragna will probably never have anything even remotely resembling the level of global prestige these two have, but there's a reason he's celebrated as one of the best fighting game protagonists or even video game protagonists in general by most Blazblue fans who check out the series' story.

I think Nishikiyama Akira from the first yakuza game is a good example of a character broken by despair. You have a man who’s best friend takes the fall of for a murder you committed while justifiably enraged so you can take care of you sick sister and all your best friend asked you to do was to watch over everyone. Years of things slowly falling apart and being constantly told how much better your best friend is then you never being able to escape their shadow. Now through the course of the game Nishiki lost everyone he was supposed to protect and inadvertently killing his sick sister making his best friends sacrifice worthless

Some other examples of broken characters that I like is Darth maul in TCW series. You could see how the obsession for revenge drove him insane, to the point he saw his own brother as just his apprentice. Something I’d like to point out about kinger is his obsession with bugs. He says in episode 3 that he did 7 years of computer science, which related with resolving computer bugs. His wife studied entomology, the study of bugs, so kinger liking bugs is probably because of his wife

I know other good examples of broken characters Eddie valiant and Rick Sanchez. Spoiler warning for both. Eddie valiant from Roger rabbit: Eddie and his brother teddy used to be a great detective duo helping toons in need. Photos showed he used to be a more happy and fun loving person. It all changed when a toon they were after killed his brother and thus destroying the happiness and fun loving side of Eddie, leaving only an alcoholic, toon racist, bitter man. It’s only thanks to his adventures with Roger that Eddie came to slowely become the fun loving detective he used to be and finally bringing the toon who killed his brother to justice. Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty: Rick used to be a good man with a happy family until a version of him took it all away. Rick then spend decades searching the multiverse for the version of him that took away everything. In his search though he began to ask: if there are infinite numbers of universes with an infinite amount of people in it, how did any individual life matter? This led Rick to become an alcoholic nihilist.

Sumire Yoshizawa from Persona 5 Royal, prior struggled to step out of her twin sister Kasumi's shadow in gymnastics causing her to develop an inferiority complex and low self-esteem. Things took a turn for the worse when after a fallout Sumire runs onto the street in frustration and Kasumi saves her from an oncoming car, killing her in the process. Her sister's death mixed with survivor's guilt and trauma drove Sumire into severe depression. Fearing their daughter is suicidal, her parents sent her to Maruki for counseling and during their sessions he uses his Persona's ability to rewrite Sumire's cognition to think like Kasumi after the latter expressed a desire to take up her sister's identity as an misplaced apology for indirectly causing her death and achieve their dream of performing in the gymnastics competition. Throughout the story, "Kasumi " interacts with Joker on a daily basis along with the Phantom Thieves, showing to be a bubbly and polite hardworker. But during the Third Semester arc, the facade is completely shattered when Maruki reveals memories of her past, causing her Persona to go berserk from Sumire refusing to accept her true identity out of guilt. After the Phantom Thieves return to Maruki's Palace, Sumire finally accepts her identity, allowing her to reawaken her Persona

Handsome Jack. A man made through betrayals. He wanted to be a hero and save people. He used to see the world in the shades of gray that it is but after the betrayal of his former girlfriend moxxie, and later on Lilith scaring his face his world view shattered. There was no more grays only black and white, bandits and heros, and he was the GODDAM HERO!

Speaking of hope and despair, I'd like to hear you talk about the trauma from various characters in the Danganrompa franchise. There's a lot of variety there as despair always takes on many forms. Including the very existence of the two DR anime shows, the adaptation of the first game and the sequel to the first game, second game and Ultra Despair Girls.. Also the fact that I have yet to play Ultra Despair Girls and haven't actually made it that far into V3 yet....

I try my best to explore these themes in my own writing, especially when it comes to depression and overcoming trauma. For example, every character has another whose plot mirrors theirs. One succeeds, the other fails, and maybe a third to show an alternate route of that success. How one can claw their way out and win the day but how that resulted in them taking a darker path than they were already on, and vice versa. No one is truly guaranteed to see the next day, which makes the fact that they manage to despite the pain that holds them back all the more compelling. The story that I really explore this concept in detail is called Where Dead Men Roam.

15:05 I like this question it lets me rant about something I haven't mentioned in a while. He's not in media he's a character I've been writing about for years, he's a cyborg wanting to avenge the death of family and in the story he's taken the path down darkness and despair while the people he's met try to put him back on the right path, a good example is when hes in a fight with one of the antagonists, they taunt and mock him for losing his loved ones and when he defeats him hes still cocky thinking he won't stoop low to kill someone. But he does and after he kills the antagonist he proceeds to continue to beat on the corpse till it's unrecognizable. He only stopped when the others pulled him away from the body while he was hysterically crying
@leonardoschettino31622 ай бұрын
beserk, and the best part is not that the main character is broken, but how the manga deal with it and make him finaly realise how broken he is and how vengance is holding him and preventing him not to only live his life, but also to be with the people he really cares about, and the manga itself changes after that point too. its incredible i really can't recommend beserk enought

Honestly, a detail i really liked about valen's introduction fight is that hanto seems to go through a shitton of pain just transforming into valen. the dude came fresh out of surgery with an alien organ that his body barely got any time to get used to and it really shows just how hell bent he was on doing this.
@1ace10002 ай бұрын
I was honestly surprised to see both of them together in the thumbnail, but I find it highly appreciable that they got covered for this very aspect. Hanto and Kinger are both definitely done right as broken characters and it's funny too how both show themes do something whimsical, then low-key turn out to have a twisted plot development for the characters involved.
