Absolutely agree. He reminds me of some of the gifted human cell culture researchers I've been fortunate to meet and have in depth conversations with working in the medical field. I think it comes down to being aware enough to understand what a reasonably intelligent layperson can grasp quickly to give a window into the perspective of an expert. Not a common thing!

What I love about Lex's podcasts is that such smart conversations are made for the audience. Manolis doesn't explain stuff to Lex, because many things he already knows, and they both know it. He explains to the audience. Lex doesn't ask some questions for him to understand, he may already know it, from own studies or from conversations outside the podcast. Lex wants the audience to know the answers. And for myself Lex is asking right questions at a right time. Just really great podcast.

I think you put the nail on the head for what makes Lex such an awesome conversation partner. He asks *exactly* what folks would be wondering at each moment. That, and his excitement about life, science, and everything. Truly a pleasure to be part of his awesome series of podcasts. :-)

@@ManolisKellis1 also, he doesn’t try to dumb down the concepts his guests convey. I appreciate that very much, even though I don’t know much of what you’re saying in this podcast, for example, but I’ll read up about it and educate myself.

Manolis is one of my favorite guests on your podcast and one with who I find I share a fair degree of philosophical overlap. I am working on developing quantitative methods to tease out spatial structure/function relationships in the human oral microbiome. I use a model culture system simulating the human mouth and CLASI-FISH (combinatorial labeling and spectral imaging) to simultaneously visualize eight (or more) taxa. There have been so many excellent computational tools developed for learning all facets of genomes and how they are regulated. My goal is to adapt these tools for use in understanding 3D spatiotemporal relationships.
