@@neogauntlet1008 Because it's player expression and a form of gameplay that has been slowly stripped away for profit. Customization is a big reason I even play games. It let's me insert myself into other worlds by expressing my own style. There's a reason Sims CC is so popular. People like creating. Now it's just $20 templates that have no individuality and force you to pay to look how you want.

You know why I started playing Destiny? Because when shadowkeep launched it went f2p. I'd heard friends talk about it over the years and thought I'd try it out, and the rest is history. Even ignoring Concord, with a price tag associated you're never going to get the drive-by, casual players who would have dipped their toe in and then get hooked. You're basically only targeting the existing extraction shooter playerbase - and if there are zero f2p alternatives, they're missing the opportunity to fill that hole in the market.

In Concords case the competition was free in Marathons case the game they have to worry about starts at $50 and it's competition has treated it's players HORRIBLY the last couple years so if Bungie can make a good extraction shooter, not add P2W like its competition then that $40 price tag isn't gonna be a barrier for most who actually care about the genre.

Whether the monetization is to sustain the development or its straight up gouging money. We have no guarantees the game will not be the same. MXTs with a 100k average players per month werent enough money apparently idk how their economics gonna work with marathon either

What have you been taking that you genuinely think D2 is monetized to hell? Other than seasons and DLC (which is standard across every damn game), the micro transactions are not only purely cosmetic, but a significant portion of PAID cosmetics get put up for FREE for brightdust (and these are easier to earn now than ever before). Pretty much every gun or armor ornament I've bought with brightdust by simply being a bit patient. That's it. Non of these things impact your game experience in the slightest either.

The difference is”Class” gives RPG vibes while “ Hero” sets off Overwatch PTSD sending the player in an incoherent mess. But no one has yet to establish a definition that separates the two just a lot of very flaky opinion that reall segments that most gamers think “hero shooter” means it’s a 100% xerox of Overwatch. The $40 is a calculated risk in the pay to try is a calculated risk. Sure it worked for games like Helldivers, DRG, Siege, overwatch, CS:GO, COD, PD, Titanfall 2, four honor, and quite a few other games. The specifics of $40 sound more like that the Financial office is taking note that pvp multiplayer only games at full or over full price don’t really work any more. I think Siege was the last big game to actually succeed with this selling tactic. The mass dominance of PVP FTP means that unless you have other none PVP online only content your game is seen as a bad investment. Sure you have sucess like CS:GO and overwatch, but then you have Lawbreakers that just don’t and the people who did drop the $40 don’t really have anything to play when everyone is gone. With the exception of COD and FIFA there just isn’t any room in the market for this pricing. I do think it’s good they dropped it down to $40 when we live in a era where dlc get priced gouged as expansion or new games such as ALL of Destiny, shadow of the urdtree, and Tears of the kingdom. Would ftp be better? Yea, but at least it’s not the $70 bs the industry is desperate to make standard.

Even if the game is good, it’s still going to be an extremely hard sell considering bungie’s horrible reputation that they brought on themselves. The internet knows this company is so greedy that activision of all companies had to tell them to calm down with monetization. Mainstream famous streamers like moist critical, some ordinary gamers, and Asmongold showed new potential players that bungie is a horrible company. Both Destiny’s had rough launches yet were charged full price, bungie forced players to buy dlcs for content that should’ve been there at launch, then they made destiny 2 free to play, then removed a bunch a content players paid for and made most guns useless, then sold back those guns in later season passes. Dlcs rose in price and shrunk in content and bungie started charging more money for stuff that came with the dlcs. Each season, they add overpriced armor sets the store while whining about having to create ONE free bland armor set per year. I think most people are just going to pass since they don’t want to deal with bungie’s bs.

Frankly, if a platform utilizes FOMO on their MTX, then they are being predatory. end of story. it does not matter if it is legally sound to put armors and colors behind a paywall and a timer. It is objectively, morally reprehensible when not even a full 10 years ago i could've gotten all of that for free by completing challenges. Challenges that unlock shaders exist. While I agree that people should vote with their wallets, the fact of the matter is that just because the choice is %100 mine on whether i purchase it or not does not mean that Bungie or Sony or whoever is pushing the MTX isn't responsible for their own predatory actions. just because your trap is laid out in plain view doesnt mean its not your fault as well as theirs when it hurts someone. The market needs to shift because its very obvious they dont look at us as their community. We are their bottom line. Marathon isn’t being made for the Destiny players. I’m sure Destiny players will still give it a try and probably play it, but why would Bungie make a game that would take away player count from their own game. Marathon is being made to break into new markets and draw new people into the Bungie games franchise. I have a feeling most PvE Destiny players are gonna hate it but at the end of the day this game isn’t for them. Im excited for Marathon because Bungie hasn’t released a new game in like 7 years, and you might be able to argue they haven’t released a new game in 10 years because Destiny 2 was a sequel.

Class vs Hero To use Destiny 2. A Hero would be Ana Bray. Locked to Golden Gun, Combustion perk, Super Ability focused gameplay. A Hero would be Uldren, Nightstalker, invisibility, etc etc etc... A Class would be Hunter. With the variety of abilities that are Hunter locked but you can probably cycle them out and only have so many equipped at a time. Wukong in the Prologue vs Erlang is a Hero, Destined One is a class.

hero based means that each character has defined traits and personality while a class based just means someone (you) filling a role and can customize and define that character how you want and is usually a self insert. For example: You know who Reaper is in Overwatch as a character and how he plays. Whereas in Destiny, you play a class (Titan, Hunter, Warlock) that you define and customize with weapons, appearance, and armor. That's the difference. For Marathon, since they're going by classes, there will be set roles that each will play with no defining character. So you can be a tanky class, a stealthy class, etc.

The issue with the Hero Shooter thing is that it HAS become kind of ambiguous. At what point does a game switch from Class to Hero based? Apex Legends and Valorant count as hero shooters but every hero can freely use whatever weapon you equip. Does BF2042 count as a hero shooter because it has specialists? Their voicelines are pretty generic soldier speak. Delta force is described as a class based game and BF2042 got a ton of flack at launch because of specialits yet as far as I can tell both gamesshares many of the same aspects apart from being able to see the face of 2042s characters.

It would be like choosing to play as Zavala (arc Titan), Ikora (void Warlock) or Cayde (solar Hunter) but those were the only 3 options. That along with the fact that they’re concerned about new player development already before the game is out is WILD. Like Cross said, it’s a lottery shooter…what new player experience? New player experience is irrelevant.

Making it $40 vs F2P makes it easier to police cheaters. I’m excited for this game, regardless of the attitude around it.

3 points on the price tag. 1 - Money is not illimited, if i pay to play destiny maybe i'll not be paying to play marathon, i live in Brasil and the prices on destiny made a lot of friends just turn down destiny for life. 2- Making the game free would make the audience for a Bungie game more broad, witch could lead people to try destiny since its a bungie game as well thus increasing the number of players on destiny. 3- The majority of extractuon shooters on the market right now have price tags, making your game free could be something diferent on the market that could make people try and stay at your game. No matter how you see, Bungie needs new players and putting a price tag on the two games just dosen't make sense to me, if marathon comes out with a price tag i would drop it, unless its a great game.

Hero vs Class shooter could mean either something like everyone has a roster of 7 shapes to pick from, which are fundamentally the same (a triangle is a triangle, but a triangle is not a circle) but with different skins. Or it could be like Apex/Overwatch, where every Hero is unique, but they're grouped up into supports, assaults ect. which would give say all tanks a minimum 50 shield or assaults only have the extra movement abilities or whatever. Also, (coming from someone who played The Division/DMZ and only watched Tarkov/Hunt:showdown), Extraction shooters could range from the simple kill everything, stay alive and bounce with loot, to the HC-esque of Tarkovs weapon building and body part healing nightmare.

Marathon will cost $0 because Bungie has lost my faith and business. Edit: Last thing I want to do is help Bungie's CEOs get another car.

Considering the cheater issues in Destiny, I really hope they have the 40$ price tag, F2P will be riddled with cheaters, considering the cheat makers already know how he engine works.
