It's funny that Marcus Aurelius, the most powerful man on Earth at a time, was once telling himself "get out of the bed already!" just like I do.

That’s why Meditations is the ultimate self-help guide: Marcus Aurelius had no idea that anyone would ever read it. He was chastising himself, not dispensing advice to others as a wannabe guru. From this I get an image of Marcus as someone who really liked to sleep in- just like I do. He was chastising himself to go against his desires and get out of bed.

@@defectivepikachu4582 True, its very frustrating when you realize the other person is a two faced pos and your "friendship" was all just a lie for them to get mostly narcissistic supply. But look at it like this, they are the insecure one, they are the coward, they have the infection.. That disease will follow them for the rest of their lives, and almost certainly be passed on to their offspring. Any one they partner with will also have to bear the desiese and fakeness they live by. Rejoice that you are rid of these scumbages and let them wollo in their own filth. Sure watch out for this now that you know it's out there, but don't let it sour your relationships with others, or put a mental block in your way when making new friends. Everyone is not a two faced pos.....remember that.

One of my favorite Marcus Aurelius quotes: "Concentrate every minute like a Roman on doing what’s in front of you with precise and genuine seriousness, tenderly, willingly, with justice." We must discern the center, and learn to con-centrate. In all that we do. In a sense, life really is that simple, and that wonderful.

@@chetsenior7253 It is a little more complicated than that. Just because he was emperor for a time does not mean he could make all of the decisions. In todays sense it feels embarassing, but you are literally feeding people. The same way chefs did in the roman empire, even if you are underpayed, strive to do good and be good and find a good job. I hate hearing people hate theie jobs, i didnt like my job at the supermarket either all that much, but I helped, because of me people had food on their table. The book by Piers Steel on Procrastination is a good one, it gave many insights on why people ( me too ) procrastinate and what to do about it. Analytically seeing the problem of procrastination works better than only forcing oneself. Like , you are able to make a truant child ( your mind ) do something by convincing him rather than ordering him to do something with the fear of a punishment if he is not willing to do it.

gpt Marcus: Thank you for your message. I understand that finding one's passion and purpose in life can be challenging, especially when others around us may not be supportive or understanding. However, it is essential to remember that we are ultimately responsible for our own actions and choices. It is true that not everyone can find or pursue their passion, but each of us can strive to live a virtuous life and make the best of our circumstances. Reflect on what matters most to you, and try to find small ways to incorporate those values into your daily life. In doing so, you may discover new passions or develop a deeper appreciation for the world around you. Furthermore, it is important not to judge ourselves by the opinions of others, but rather to focus on cultivating our own inner strength and resilience. As I wrote in 'Meditations', 'Be like the cliff against which the waves continually break; but it stands firm and tames the fury of the water around it.'" Remember that the journey to self-discovery is not an easy one, and it may take time to find your path. Be patient with yourself, and do not lose hope.

Marcus Aurelius was simply a man. A human being who recognized his own humanity. Other species do not "forget" themselves, they are self-aware, and understand life and their role within it, even if it means living with a human who doesn't understand that for themselves or others. Humans no longer have a known ecological or biological niche or role, and that may well be the fundamental problem.

@Luzhong_editz No, it's more that our use of tools and resulting technologies enabled us to live more predictable lives requiring fewer skills our very ancient ancestors would have had to master merely to stay alive. That has nothing to do with conscience at all.

@@Luzhong_editz That does make sense, too. Anthropologists have debated whether and how early culture arose in ancient hominins as a way of coping with their reality in the natural world. Was culture a reflection of how they saw themselves within an ecosystem, or was it used to explain and understand their experiences? Fast forward to now when coping with other humans is probably the bigger issue than the natural world for the most part, lol 😅

This message is a lot easy to get behind if you have a job you enjoy or at least is indifferent about. But for the majority of people that is not the case. As humans our true nature is to keep wanting more for ourselves, for better or for worse. We want a true purpose on this earth, we want compassion from others, and a better position in life than what we currently have. I think a better message for this video should be to get up and work so that you can achieve a greater position on life than what you have right now, other wise your gonna rot in a hole all your life and have nothing to show for it. Its not easy at all, and also not fair for most people, but it's the reality

Wow, this video really hits home for me. Marcus Aurelius' advice to focus on doing what we were born to do as human beings is so important. It's easy to get caught up in the comfort of staying in bed or avoiding work, but we have a responsibility to ourselves and to the world to contribute in meaningful ways. I think what Marcus Aurelius is really getting at is the idea of finding purpose and meaning in our lives. We can't just exist for the sake of existing; we need to actively pursue our passions and work towards a greater purpose. It's also interesting to think about the examples he gives of animals and insects, who are so diligent in carrying out their individual tasks to keep the world in order. As humans, we have the capacity to do so much more, but we often fall short. Overall, this video has inspired me to be more intentional about how I spend my time and to prioritize doing things that align with my values and purpose. And hey, if subscribing to a daily stoic email can help me stay on track, I'm all for it!

This makes absolutely no sense when there’s nothing you feel passionate about doing, or working on. Getting to “work”, for most people, means doing a pointlessly monotonous job they care nothing for, to complete tasks that do nothing but some artificial humanly constructed freedom from boredom.. But, I can look at it in other ways that can make sense to my life if I choose to be less vexatious. Most of us have things we choose not to work on in our daily lives at home, or on our own mental and physical health.

For many years I’ve had the itch of taking my own life, as of late it’s come to a peak. I find these stoic philosophies so empowering, and yet, so soul crushing, the knowledge that as a privileged man in arguably the greatest age of discovery and advancement, the inventory of the world is at my disposal with the single touch of a button, I’ve had education, and I know I have good ideas, the never ending ether has been tamed so we can communicate Instantaneously with almost any location miles above and below the worlds surface, as I sit here, my breakfast alone has ingredients from every corner of the globe. and as never before, so many like me, see no place for themselves in the years to come. I do hope we can all find our own reason to start our days early. Good luck everyone.

I tend to have these same thoughts. The world is too convenient nowadays. The only thing that most people work for nowadays is money, everything else has been so dumbed down that you can live your life from your couch without talking with anyone. People don't have to work for dopamine anymore, they don't have to work for food anymore, they don't have to work for relationships anymore, they don't even have to work for themselves anymore. But, this is how we can set ourselves apart from the rest of modern society, we can open our eyes to the negative aspects of the new world and we can make the changes in our lifestyle. I have been going outside in nature and mountain biking every day for around a month now, I feel so much more fulfilled than I have before. Taking your life is not an option, there are no benefits from it and it is not the easy way out, it is the cowards way out. You are not a coward, and no matter how much it might seem like the world is not worth it, that just means that you have changes to make. It is possible

@@ethanjolleyy precisely, I myself am about to walk an hour to the gym, spend afew hours doing my thing, then walking home, about an hour both ways, just so I can think. Quit my awesome job, Im 26 (was) working in the film industry, thousands a week, around literal movie stars and peculiar people, every meal made for me. I saw the light, work means nothing if you ain’t got your heart right, I was surrounded by empty shells, decorated with cool stories and fancy cars; no kids, no nothing. But god it look like a good nothing, the nothing we all work towards. Killing our character though work.. I thought I hit it big time.. it almost swallowed me, I was becoming sour, lost almost all my friends in 6 years, I was always busy, but I was.. “successful” But I now know I need to learn to be ‘poor’ I’m now purposely broke, just so I can spend time with my ageing parents, make new friends, work on my physique, something I love. Now look for something to keep me motivated to face the future. I got awhile before I come good, I still don’t know whether I want to ‘stay’, if you get me, but I think I’m on the right path now.

@@anthraxmanic this is a very motivational story, I can't believe that you were so successful and decided to walk away because you realized that the modern idea of success isn't the true meaning. It takes a very strong person to abandon all of that for the sake of improving your heart. In the end that is all that matters, success isn't determined by money, or cars. It is determined by fulfillment, whether that be raising a family, or going to the gym, or having a garden. I am proud of you, it took a lot of strength to walk away from such a lavish lifestyle, it also took a lot of self awareness to see that it wasn't going to make you happy in the end. Keep it up, use these experiences to learn what makes you happy, and grow from it.

I was born to play and teach music. I got "permanently laid off." I was told I was not fired. The reason was that I followed the law. I was expected to work when I had COVID and then when my entire family got Covid, by mandate and my own moral compass stayed home to take care of the sick and not bring in germs. I went from 30 students to 5 and slowly down to one student. I still worked there for a long while on my Saturdays, but it was clear what was going on. I took the summer off and I have been re hired to a place that finds me students and I travel to their house for lessons. I haven't gotten a student yet. In the mean time I am going to do Amazon deliveries in my vehicle. Hopefully, that works out. I'll never give up on music though. Never.

I think the issue for most people is not getting out of bed, but why am I getting out of bed to go to a job I don't like or am not passionate about. Then that normally leads to asking "what am I passionate about?" And for most people, I think we don't have passions, we try to explore the world and find the strength to put ourselves in new places/positions, but is is tough. It requires courage, to be vulnerable, to start a new. And you may find still find yourself wanting.
@Boricosa

In a way, passions are forced out of us. Whenever I even considered working a job that doesn't pay a lot, I would be met with heavy criticism from my peers. In my experience, education has been focused on building "a person who knows how to follow orders and knows how to answer tests", but never "a person who makes the world a better place". It makes me question "why do I have to know how to answer tests?", to which people would probably reply "so you can get into a higher education degree and get a higher paying job! don't you want money?" Why is earning the only alternative to starving to death? Why is that "choice" seen as a good thing?

This is missing a key component. One does not work solely for the sake of working. No one’s sole purpose is to work. It’s to work for a purpose. If you’re sitting in a cubicle under artificial fluorescent lights 40-50 hours a week to get by while simultaneously contributing to the over abundant wealth of your ceo, that is not your purpose. Make no mistake, your purpose is out there. Finding that purpose, THAT is what is worth getting out of bed for. If someone (or some KZbin video) makes you feel lazy, as if there must be something wrong with you, because you have trouble motivating yourself to get out of bed to do work that doesn’t inspire you or fulfill your purpose in any way, don’t listen to them. Rather, listen to your body and soul telling you this is not what you were put here for. Seek your purpose. The motivation will follow.

It's pretty funny you post this here, actually, since Marcus Aurelius talks specifically about doing work as one's purpose in life, and not wasting time on frivolity. And before you latch on to that, I said wasting time: there's a difference between making enough time to relax when you need to, and having too much and becoming lazy and slothful.
