Getting out of hospital is such a weird feeling. I think short-stay should be the norm, I totally agree that the extended stays are detrimental. People make their home there. And it’s almost like they don’t want you to leave? Like when I was there I was lucky that I have the cognitive ability to ask to be discharged, and explain why I wanted to be discharged. But otherwise they don’t try to help you make progress. It’s just a holding cell. Thank you for doing this video! Lots of love

I was hospitalized in psych for 10 days & even that was enough to make me lose all sense of normal life. When I got out it felt like I had been there for months. I had a really hard time integrating back into the regular world again with no transition period, & even my friends were like even the way you speak is different, like you sound like you just came out of prison. I was like no, you actually have more freedom in prison. It was an awful horrible hospital too. Kinda traumatic even. To this day I start panicking at the thought of even stepping foot in a hospital. I can’t even imagine being in there for 5+ months.

Although obviously a hospital stay is never ideal, I am so so glad for the people with free health care who can utilize those services if they need it. As an american, I worry about how many people lose their lives/families because they're unable to get emergency treatment. Those who do seek help often end up in crippling debt and lose everything because of the cost, essentially, of keeping themselves safe. It's a horrendous system and I'm glad that you weren't burdened with it.

Just seen this video. My daughter is 19, has BPD and PTSD, ASD, she self harms horrifically and has tried to take her life many times since the age of 9yo. She has been inpatient on and off since 15yo, from a few weeks to 11 months. A week ago she was admitted to St Andrews hospital EUPD ward, on a section 3 for an intensive locked DBT rehabilitation program. We have been through so much with her and hearing you talk is like listening to her talk. This treatment is the only treatment that works for her condition, medication doesn't work, I fail at the moment to see a light at the end of the tunnel, I just hope this treatment works and she sets on the road to recovery.

If I could go back and hug 19 year old me, I’d tell her that she is going to be ok, and life is worth living. Please hug your daughter from me, an internet stranger. But just know that I genuinely wish the best for your daughter, and also for you. You all need to heal. I hope things look up for you and your daughter soon xx

American who lived in the UK here. Her experience is incredibly lucky and the majority of people in the UK who suffer from mental illness don’t get treated with NHS. I have a skin condition called HS and struggled for 3 years with doctors ignoring me, not showing up to appointments that were booked 4+ months out and cancellations due to being overbooked. Since the NHS is so flawed, it takes months to seek any sort of treatment if you’re lucky enough to get any. I had to move back to America to seek treatment for my HS since the healthcare was so bad in the UK. I also want to say I had private insurance as well and still could not get any treatment because of the NHS system. Free healthcare does not equal good healthcare and those with private insurance are just paying for nothing. I just wanted to point out to all the Americans in the comments that this scenario is highly uncommon and anybody there can’t just check themselves into a mental health hospital for 12 months for free. There’s also many things that NHS does not cover and the person is responsible paying for the treatment out of pocket.

I have paranoid Schizophrenia and was sectioned for seven months. It was ok in the psychiatric unit. The bad parts was when I got dragged to isolation room which was sparse; there was a sink with push button taps, a toilet , a soft chair and a two inch thick mattress on the floor. No bedding - slept using my shoes as a pillow, no quilt?was allowed. It was almost totally suicide unsuitable. I spent ten or eleven days straight in confinement, but got out when I stopped head butting the walls and door. They put my food in the room by just slightly opened the door...placed it near the door. Four members of staff were required when ever anyone entered the room. They wore visors and once I nearly got out the room. As they were closing the door, I pushed it back and they had to get 4 staff to prevent me escaping. My mate, Remi escaped by using a chair standing on the back on it, he clambered onto the flat roof then jumped off the nice side (the outdoor side) I got told off cos I helped him escape. In my hospital, Barnstaple in north Devon, the tv lounge was locked at 11.30pm and I’d take my meds at 10.30pm then again at 9.30am. I slept with a woman whilst sectioned: she was sectioned too. We both got into trouble but it was worth it. I had a fag every hour as this was the time schedule for ciggies or fresh air breaks. 12 months must have been extremely stressful, I did 7 months on level 2; checked me each 15 minutes, or quarter of an hour. Zero privacy. I got heroin into the ward, just percy; just a gram for 60 quid; put it down my boxers. Used to hide crack in the toilet paper thing, in the bathroom which was on suite !! Hooray lol!! Now I’m clean from all illegal drugs, including cannabis.

I got 10 minutes in and couldn’t watch any more. I have avoided being put in a psych ward (apparently I wasn’t ill enough, which makes me laugh), but I’m eternally grateful for not having been sent to hospital. I’ve watched others go through that hellish roller coaster ride, and have been made someone’s “nominated person”, an advocate for them without being next-of-kin. A lot of good it did for either me or the person I was trying desperately to protect. From my observation, it may be a good thing to have a psych ward, as long as the nursing staff, psychologists, occupational therapists and doctors gave a shit about their patients, i.e. being present with their patients, paying them attention and interacting with them as human beings, not jailers. My observation indicated that no staff member was willing to come out form their glass-encased fortresses unless it was to let people in or out of the locked ward, to administer medications, or to quieten down (usually by chemical means) agitated patients. I would like to think that a bit more love would go a very long way. Sending love, light, laughter, prosperity, peace and good health to you all ❤️❤️❤️

I went to a mental hospital twice when I was 13. It was no help whatsoever. Yes, it kept me from weapons to harm myself but they never taught me about self worth . It’s been 3 years since and I still hurt myself & feel like I don’t deserve to live
@patricialong2803 Жыл бұрын
Yes you do deserve to live you wasn't bought in this world for nothing the good lord your savior he loves you.I don't know you but i loves you because we're both from.God and we're his children's please, believe this earth that we all lives on is just temporary please,hear me out it isn't you that hates yourself it's the devil thats messing with your head you see.When we don't have a relationship with.God to pray to him only to give us strength, and to be strong,our lord he will guide you through this life he would take all your pain away and wash you clean as snow you see without.God the devil himself will take over your mind and he will mess with you he would put bad things in your head to make you feel as if you don't love yourself he knows that you don't have a relationship with your father in heaven that is why he sent his son down her to help us to come home to him.When we Lea this world if you take your own life don't you know that you can end up in hell thats what Satan wants is for you to feel unloved and crazy.When you are not please,get yourself a Bible, and read it talk to your savior ask him to get to know him so

When I was in a psych hospital It was dryI just slept most of the time because I was so depressed. I got there because voices where telling me to end my life. The psychiatrist was not too pleasant but the rest of the staff was fine. They were going to keep me longer but thanks to my psychiatrist said it was ok to discharge me.

I've stayed in a mental hospital for a week and a half... I thought I was going to go crazy! People were very thoughtful there, very helpful, food wasn't too bad but I'm BPD and NPD I can't be without my caretakers without going bonkers. They saw I was In too much sepparation anxiety and sent me out.

This is really how I felt and its really is hard coming home because I was at a psych hospital for 2 months and I didn't want to go home for a while. 💙
@Botoshel192 жыл бұрын
That’s what they do. They first break you and then make you swallow the victim pill. Before you know it.. You’ll want to be back there . They don’t have to extend your stay. Or through the constant abuse present in most mental hospitals.. Chances are you’ll break at some point and get back inside.

So beautiful and intelligent … I can fully relate to this subject, extremely well presented and described x
@fisharefriends5982 жыл бұрын
When your come to the end of treatment, you should have. Staggered release.. it does happen in many places. But depends . When your there and treat it like home, that’s what’s needed. You need to do the therapy and work with the the nurses to help yourself get better. If you don’t treat it like home, and immerse yourself it becomes a harsh experience And when your in there… always ask what you can do… phones allowed.. chargers probably not And omg admission on the graveyard shift is the worst… there’s not enough staff at night for admissions… or more accurately… the consultant in charge is never around

I’m really anxious because my Mum said she will take me to a mental hospital if I self harm again... it’s so hard because I’m trying not too. But i can’t stop. so I honestly don’t know what’s going to happen to me. Tbh I’m hardly going to school either which is effecting me, over the last 3 weeks I’ve been in 4 times..
