Also one of the saddest. All love described in the song is in the past and main hero is looking backward on it. There is something unsettling for me in this song, which stems from it backward looking nature.

I was fortunate enough to see Marillion live at The Chance in Poughkeepsie NY in fall of 1989 I believe. I'm 66 now, and I've seen many live shows, Pink Floyd, The Who, etc. but seeing Marillion up close and personal will always be one of the favorite shows I've ever attended. I was actually standing shoulder to shoulder with Fish as he made his way through the crowd while singing this song. Almost 35 years ago, but I'll never forget that show...
@quillishwhammy3686
@quillishwhammy3686 Жыл бұрын
That show at The Chance would've been in 1987. They played two shows there in October of 87. Fish left the band in July of 88, and Marillion released Season's End (their first album with Steve Hogarth) in the fall of 89. They didn't play The Chance again until June of '90, and you certainly would never mistake Steve Hogarth for Fish. 😆 Sorry to be a nerd, but your point is well taken. 😄

It was...."Kayleigh" is a song by British neo-prog band Marillion. It was released as the first single from the concept album Misplaced Childhood. It is the band's most successful single in the UK, where it peaked at number two and stayed on the UK Singles Chart for a total of 14 weeks. It also became the band's most successful single worldwide, reaching the top 10 in Ireland, Norway, and West Germany. In the United States, it gave the band their sole appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, reaching number 74 in October 1985..."

Berlin sometime in 1985 or 86? I was on the technical team for the video shoot. Sound assistant. Shooting with the Arri SR on 16mm colour negative, playback sound with the Nagra ... Active speakers on a handcart, voltage transformer and a car battery. It was a bulky technique. Marillion was not so well known in West Berlin at the time of Einstürzende Neubauten and Industrial Post Punk. They lived in the middle-class hotel Heckers Dehle .... somewhere across the Kudamm. I remember that they were all very normal and friendly musicians. Especially the keyboard man. There were also quite a few others in Berlin. They produced the video in Berlin because Marillion were recording at Hansaton..the recording Studio no 1 in Berlin. Shooting locations were the wall die Mauer near Alfred Döblin Platz, Meistersaal Hansatonstudio, Schloss Charlottenburg, and on the west bank So36, near Schlesisches Tor opposite Oberbaumbrücke. But of course it was still closed at the time and I think it was pretty broken. It's strange that it was so long ago and I can remember it. Fish was a huge guy. ..and the model became his wife....the 80s in Berlin 😂😂😂 ...and many girls in England are now called Kayleigh....

Do you remember? Chalk hearts melting on a playground wall Do you remember? Dawn escapes from moon washed college halls Do you remember? The cherry blossom in the market square Do you remember? I thought it was confetti in our hair By the way, didn't I break your heart? Please excuse me, I never meant to break your heart So sorry, I never meant to break your heart But you broke mine Kayleigh, is it too late to say I'm sorry? And, Kayleigh, could we get it together again? I just can't go on pretending That it came to a natural end Kayleigh, oh I never thought I'd miss you And, Kayleigh, I thought that we'd always be friends We said our love would last forever So how did it come to this bitter end? Do you remember? Barefoot on the lawn with shooting stars Do you remember? The loving on the floor in Belsize Park Do you remember? Dancing in stilettoes in the snow Do you remember? You never understood I had to go By the way, didn't I break your heart? Please excuse me, I never meant to break your heart So sorry, I never meant to break your heart But you broke mine Kayleigh, I just want to say I'm sorry But, Kayleigh, I'm too scared to pick up the phone To hear you've found another lover To patch up our broken home Kayleigh, I'm still trying to write that love song Kayleigh, it's more important to me, now you're gone Maybe it will prove that we were right Or it'll prove that I was wrong

"Dancing in stilettoes in the snow"......if I put my 'teen lad growing up in the 80s' head on, that line conjures up the most amazing images. "I'm too scared to pick up the phone".......how many times since 1985 have I been just that? Did we deserve such beautiful music as this?? You bet we did! 🙂

Anytime I get a blank look, 'marillion? ' say Kayleigh, and they always say dancing in stilettos in the snow. Oh yes, that one . I clearly have great taste in music but terrible taste in friends if they have 2 be introduced to the best band of all time. ❤

Its 2024, and I've been listening to this song for 35 odd years, and I JUST realized that when Fish sings "Im still trying to write that love song", hes referring back to Script for a Jesters Tear where he sings "I never did write that love song". Fucking incredible.

When this song came out & i was with my first 'true' love we BOTH wanted a daughter named Kayleigh...we broke up and that dream died. MANY years later, i moved away and went to find a new hairdresser...her name was Kayleigh and her parents had the same first names as me and my first real love!
