I served in the Army and was in the Middle East during Desert Shield/Storm. I brought home a rare form of cancer that cost me a kidney. My brother was a Marine and was killed in the bombing in Beirut on 10/23/83. I think all of us lose something when we deploy to combat areas. Wanting to “be myself” has to be the exact feeling I’ve had for a very long time, w/o knowing it. Tyler, our world of veterans and patriots recognize what you’ve given for this country, even if the president doesn’t. I met with President Reagan at the memorial service for the marines in 83. He spoke privately with immediate family members. When I told him my brother’s name, he knew his rank already. He had memorized the names of every young marine, sailor, and soldier killed that morning. I’m sorry you gave up your pain meds to meet Biden.

I got a visit from Bush when I was in Walter Reed in 06. It was awkward as hell. I wasn’t tough like this dude, because I sure as hell didn’t have the morphine drip turned off, which pretty much explains the goofy ass grin I had on my face when the the photographer snapped the picture. This marine talking about that bus ride brought in a flood of emotions, because I remember it like it was yesterday. Landed in the dead of night at Andrew’s, and was packed on that bus, I was in bad shape, but there were guys that were hurting way more than me. Those grunts, groans, and screams from their pain still haunt me. I’ll always remember that when I got unloaded at Walter Reed, that there were these ladies, I’m pretty sure that they were civilian volunteers, one older lady walked up to my stretcher, put her hand on my arm, and said “don’t worry, you’re safe now.” I had to grit my teeth, because tears started flowing, I couldn’t open my mouth to respond to her kindness, because if I did I know I would have started bawling. Then I got moved, and I never seen her again.

In subsequent months, my humvee was hit three different times and the worst that happened to me was being peppered in my face with shrapnel. The VA rated my buddy at 50% for the limb. I was rated at 100% for ptsd. Mam, don’t rely on them to care for your son bc you may be disappointed.

Had a "D.C VA rep" (what she identified herself as) say to another VA employee from Edmonds, WA VA clinic at Everett, WA VA clinic grand opening, "If he was suicidal he would have done it already." Received response back from the VA saying that there was no wrongdoing from that employee. And I have been banned from getting treatment at the Everett, WA VA clinic by the VA Puget Sound.

There's all kinds of help available these days for dealing with the VA, from lawyers to people who fill out applications for you and they know how to work the system. I would tell him to seek help.

To all the men and woman who served and are still serving i salute you for your sacrifices and time served. Having a grandpa who has a purple heart from fighting in korea i must say was something special. There was something about my grandpa that made him stand out from other men. I was young when he left this world so i never got to know him the way id liked to, but the time i got with him was everything to me looking back. He never spoke about war. His grandkids meant the world to him and there wasnt anything he couldnt build out of wood. I miss him more as life ages and often wonder what lessons he could have passed down to me that would have made my life just a little bit easier then what its been. You men and woman have so much to be proud for. We all bleed red white and blue and no matter where life takes you there will always be someone around that willl extend a hand to ahow you their gratitude for all you done. Just a reminder, not all heroes are on the battlefield. My disabled veteran daughter served in Afghanistan from afar in Washington DC. She has PTSD just like a soldier in battle, as she was their ears, listening to the enemy and helping to guide our soldiers. If o something got messed up and a soldier paid with their limbs or life, she suffered right long with them and still does. I don't think she'll ever get over somethings. It wasn't her fault, but she feels directly responsible just the same. She can't tell me what happened for 70 years, so I'll never know exactly what she went through. So, I pray for all of our service men and women, and those who have suffered physically and mentally, on or off the battlefield. They are all heroes. 🙏🏻🇺🇸♥️♥️🇺🇸🙏🏻
