Fouts was a product of Don Coryell basically getting more and more pass happy with time. I think Jim Hart would’ve put up numbers if Coryell wasn’t so relatively conservative in St. Louis. Marino was the offense for Miami.

I’m glad Don Coryell got inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. The passing offense we see in today’s NFL was thanks in part to Coach Coryell who introduced a lot of unique ideas such as using the tight end position in the passing game and using a simple number play system to signify route combinations. Also despite Coryell not winning any championships himself there have been teams after his coaching reign that have won with his offensive system like the 90’s Cowboys and the 99 Greatest Show on Turf Rams. I know many will say that those teams had stellar defenses as well compared to the 80’s Chargers whose defenses were terrible to say the least but can you really tell the story of football without mentioning Don Coryell? In my opinion, you can’t because of the modern offenses we see today.

@@24hockeydad82 Not saying that they’re the same thing, both offenses have transformed the league into what you see today. While the West Coast was more of a short range, high percentage offense with sprinkles of a run game, Air Coryell was lighting up the field with astronomical numbers, even though the percentages are lower than the West Coast. It’s like Tecmo Bowl nowadays, it’s now pass first, and the running game is almost an afterthought.

Funny that when he was drafted, they had the #1 defense in the NFL. In '84, #7 defense. In '85, #12. In '86, bottom falls out, #26 ranked defense. Only 1990 did Marino in his prime have a top 10 defense at #4. By the time 1998 came, Jimmy Johnson got them back to #1 ranked defense, but Marino was average at best during that time.
