When I use a kneaded eraser, no matter what, even though it doesn't leave any residue, I always swipe my hand over the area I erased. It's just a habit I can never break

my art teacher told me a year ago the biggest rule in watercolor or any type of medium where you are combining paper and some kind of moisture (paint thinner, water, etc) is to ALWAYS tape the paper to a hard surface before starting. it stops hour paper from morphing and wrinkling and it will dry completely flat! just a tip. love your work so much, I've been watching for years!

markcrilley I think what you could do realistically is pick a .wav file or something similar to put on your phone so you can make it sound whenever you pull out the black Prismacolor pencil. It would add even more hilarity to your videos. I just started attempting to draw in general and I was completely captivated by your videos. I've been doing nothing in my free time other than watching your "How to Draw" playlist and I post my progress on Facebook and Tumblr, and apparently I'm not too horrible at following your instructions. I even surprise myself because it has always been my younger brother who drew anime in the family, but I guess he'll just have to share his torch. :D

I like how you showed great examples of what you use each type of tool for. That makes your video very original and different from every other video on KZbin. No one else shows an example of what they get out a certain tool like you did. And it was very helpful.. I really. Like how you use the white to really contrast or brighten up spots with it. Of the many other videos I have seen, I relate to you and your methods more than anyone else so far. Again, many many thanks Mark, your so helpful, and enjoyable to watch and listen too. Your a really great Guy!

Mark, Your videos are so inspiring to me! I had no idea how to draw manga and anime, but after I watched some videos of yours, I practically smacked the subscribe button! Now all my friends are asking, "How do you draw anime so well!?" and I tell them about you. I've read Miki Falls, your drawing books, and I really want Brody's Ghost(which my mom said she'll get me for my birthday.) Keep up the great work and amazing videos! Love from Germany!

you don't know how comforting and inspiring it is to know I'm not the only 'cheapy' artist out there. I'm always torn by the 'buy the best quality materials' thing, especially when I'm playing around and not even sure if I'll like the medium. To see you do such great work with very simple tools is terrific.

My favorite things to use when drawing are colored pencils, and prismacolor pencils are my absolute favorite. They are amazing. They colors are deep and beautiful and they go on so smoothly and blend easily, and they last forever because the leads don't break as easily as other colored pencils. I use my mom's set of 50 that have to be at least 20 years old, and they still work wonderfully, and I've been slowly adding to my collection. They are pretty expensive though at about $1.50-ish per pencil, which adds up very quickly, but they are so worth it. I highly recommend them if you can afford them. I need to start actually using mine more.
@Edmlady92
@Edmlady92 10 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry if I'm that "guy" but Prismacolor pencils are terrible quality now. I used to love those pencils because how deep and vivid the colors are and how great the blending. They were top-notch. A few years back, the company switched manufacturers. Right now, they're being made in Mexico and ever since they've switched, the quality went downhill. They constantly break when you try to sharpen them and the wood is so cheap and fragile. I ended up throwing mine in the trash due to all the problems I had with them. The reason yours is still good is because you have the pencils dated back 20 years ago. At that time, they were still being made in the USA which was great. I'm not trying to be mean. I'm speaking the truth. I've seen others say on customer reviews on art store sites that used to love them but now they dislike them due to the current low quality considering they're being made in Mexico now. Right now, I use Faber-Castel Polychromos and Dick Blick colored pencils. Faber Castel is more expensive but they're an excellent, high quality brand that doesn't constantly break. Dick Blick is good too. I'm just letting you know Prismacolor isn't the same as it used to be. :(
@audriwong4839
@audriwong4839 10 жыл бұрын
StrawberryLove315 is quite correct. If you manage to get your hands on an old set of prismas, you can see its quality. A while back, prismacolor was bought by a company named Sanford, I believe, and switched manufacturers. The quality went downhill from there. The wood casing was once sturdy and quality California cedar, but it was switched off to cheaply made wood casing that are dry and crackable. The lead's quality hasn't changed too much, but it has gotten less lightfast. If you look at the pencil like a bullseye, you can see the lead is generally off center, making it more prone to breakage while sharpening. The lead, being so soft, breaks easily when dropped and can cause internal damage. Because of the fact that the lead is not bonded to the case, the lead can fall out. Some more high quality brands like prismacolor: Lyra Rembrandt- Polycolor, Caran d'ache- Suprasoft (or was it supracolor, idk). They're easy to blend and are buttery and smooth, an artist's dream. Currently you call prismacolor expensive, oh no no no child, look at those suprasoft pencils. Lyra Rembrandt is fairly cheaper though. Another plus is that they're oil based, not wax like prismacolor, so no nasty wax bloom.

Ahh. I haven't really used very many of my newest ones, so that may be why I haven't had any problems yet. I love the old set to death though and I'll definitely keep them and continue to use them, but for new pencils I'll look into some other brands. Thanks for letting me know!

Congratulations on being published in so may countries! I love watching your videos & always learn something from them. I'm sorry to say I not really into manga but a few grandkids of mine are. I love your regular drawings, such as the eye & the wolf. You did a great one on infant to teen. You make it look so easy & I know it isn't....I'm taking classes on several things right now, but I'm always coming back to your videos. Also I'd love to draw & or paint our little Doxie.. He's gotten so much grey hair around his face now I'm not sure I could capture that. Have you ever drawn a ?? (Wiener dog) they are the most fun for being little...with a big bark & loves to burrow under anything!!

Dear Mark, to be honest i didn't actually watch this video until after i commented.... but this isn't about that i'd just like to thank you for all your help with my drawing, I'm in year 8 and i have to admit half (seriously) the stuff i can draw is from watching your videos! you have really helped me develop my skills in drawing and from watching you draw I can observe different techniques and know what i need to draw, because usually i just have a pencil and rubber, but you have showed me different things i can use and how! all you tutorials are amazing and all your (i cant remember what you say) fast forwarded (is that even a word?) videos are really helpful and i have actually learnt a lot about them too! so stop apologizing when you do a fast bit in a tutorial! thanks again and please keep drawing! from Kate!

I personally like to use mechanical pencils because of the different lead size and because you don't need to sharpen them. :D

I know nothing about drawing, but doesn't that make it more difficult to apply the appropriate amount of pressure with the pencil on your drawing? What I mean is that they are very fragile.

AtotehZ Not at all. I use mechanical mostly but I also use the wooden pencils like he uses when I need a wider coverage.

I like to use regular pencils because the mechanical sometimes leave hard-to-erase lines that aren't really that good when you erase the pencil lines after inking

I'm 11 years old and I love art. I feel like I understand art better than most kids my age. Almost everyone in my class draws stick figures and wanna-be anime. In my own personal opinion I'm a great artist and my class mates complement my art. I Learn more everyday from mark and other EXTREMELY talented artist,From shading to new styles of art. One of my good friends gave me a kit filled with colored pencils,pastels, water colors and graphite pencils. Now I understand how to use them.

I'm 11 too but I mostly stick to just drawing and sketching. I just have never seemed to get the hang of other materials like pastels or paint. I once drew a picture of Ryan Lochte (I'm a swimmer, and this was before the scandal although he's still my favorite) and I said to myself " I'm gonna paint this one!!" And guess what? I never did (._.) --|__| -- why am I like this | |

A few days ago, I was searching Google for help with my art, after a while I stumbled upon this guy. I watched some videos and you were showing your books, and I was wondering what they were and they look really interesting, so I'll definitely be getting your books as soon as I can. :) After I was looking at your books on Amazon UK, I watched a load of your how to videos and still am right now because I'm needing some help for my art work for school. And now, I must say that you are an amazing artist, really.

I was sort of looking at him like: "Man,not like it's MY fault!" It was quite embarassing...

Great video and I totally appreciate that you tell us to find out what tools work best for us personally. That shows me what a great teacher/person you are!! Still, it is great to have some kind of a guide line to work with! I wasn't sure tho when you started talking about the paints you use. Are they acrylic paints? I know you use water colors, (Thanks Mom!) but you lost me after that with the tubes. I use to paint with oils and the tubes can look alike. Thanks Mark!!! :)

Love your videos! I have learnt a lot from watching them. I enjoy when I can watch whole drawing without the fast forwarding. You are an amazing artist thank you for your time and sharing them. Can’t believe you create such masterpieces with few items...thought I’d have to spend millions to acquire your drawing materials. I’ve just ordered a set of the 150 Prismacolors and i haven’t received them yet.... but have been worried because now I’ve read tons of comments regarding the quality of them. Saying the leads all break and all the cores are off center. Do you have any of these problems?

Thank you for showing what those tubes of watercolors look like. I honestly had no idea that you could buy watercolors that didn't come in dried forms. Same with the gouache and how you can mix colors into it--I'll have to give both of these a try sometime! :) Can't wait for "Brody's Ghost" 5! Thanks again and take care!
