my art teacher told me a year ago the biggest rule in watercolor or any type of medium where you are combining paper and some kind of moisture (paint thinner, water, etc) is to ALWAYS tape the paper to a hard surface before starting. it stops hour paper from morphing and wrinkling and it will dry completely flat! just a tip. love your work so much, I've been watching for years!

markcrilley I think what you could do realistically is pick a .wav file or something similar to put on your phone so you can make it sound whenever you pull out the black Prismacolor pencil. It would add even more hilarity to your videos. I just started attempting to draw in general and I was completely captivated by your videos. I've been doing nothing in my free time other than watching your "How to Draw" playlist and I post my progress on Facebook and Tumblr, and apparently I'm not too horrible at following your instructions. I even surprise myself because it has always been my younger brother who drew anime in the family, but I guess he'll just have to share his torch. :D

I like how you showed great examples of what you use each type of tool for. That makes your video very original and different from every other video on KZbin. No one else shows an example of what they get out a certain tool like you did. And it was very helpful.. I really. Like how you use the white to really contrast or brighten up spots with it. Of the many other videos I have seen, I relate to you and your methods more than anyone else so far. Again, many many thanks Mark, your so helpful, and enjoyable to watch and listen too. My favorite things to use when drawing are colored pencils, and prismacolor pencils are my absolute favorite. They are amazing. They colors are deep and beautiful and they go on so smoothly and blend easily, and they last forever because the leads don't break as easily as other colored pencils. I use my mom's set of 50 that have to be at least 20 years old, and they still work wonderfully, and I've been slowly adding to my collection. They are pretty expensive though at about $1.50-ish per pencil, which adds up very quickly, but they are so worth it. I highly recommend them if you can afford them. I need to start actually using mine more.
@Edmlady9210 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry if I'm that "guy" but Prismacolor pencils are terrible quality now. I used to love those pencils because how deep and vivid the colors are and how great the blending. They were top-notch. A few years back, the company switched manufacturers. Right now, they're being made in Mexico and ever since they've switched, the quality went downhill. They constantly break when you try to sharpen them and the wood is so cheap and fragile. I ended up throwing mine in the trash due to all the problems I had with them. The reason yours is still good is because you have the pencils dated back 20 years ago. At that time, they were still being made in the USA which was great. I'm not trying to be mean. I'm speaking the truth. I've seen others say on customer reviews on art store sites that used to love them but now they dislike them due to the current low quality considering they're being made in Mexico now. Right now, I use Faber-Castel Polychromos and Dick Blick colored pencils. Faber Castel is more expensive but they're an excellent, high quality brand that doesn't constantly break. Dick Blick is good too. I'm just letting you know Prismacolor isn't the same as it used to be. :(
@audriwong483910 жыл бұрын
StrawberryLove315 is quite correct. If you manage to get your hands on an old set of prismas, you can see its quality. A while back, prismacolor was bought by a company named Sanford, I believe, and switched manufacturers. The quality went downhill from there. The wood casing was once sturdy and quality California cedar, but it was switched off to cheaply made wood casing that are dry and crackable. The lead's quality hasn't changed too much, but it has gotten less lightfast. If you look at the pencil like a bullseye, you can see the lead is generally off center, making it more prone to breakage while sharpening. The lead, being so soft, breaks easily when dropped and can cause internal damage. Because of the fact that the lead is not bonded to the case, the lead can fall out. Some more high quality brands like prismacolor: Lyra Rembrandt- Polycolor, Caran d'ache- Suprasoft (or was it supracolor, idk). They're easy to blend and are buttery and smooth, an artist's dream. Currently you call prismacolor expensive, oh no no no child, look at those suprasoft pencils. Lyra Rembrandt is fairly cheaper though. Another plus is that they're oil based, not wax like prismacolor, so no nasty wax bloom.
@brambleflower25610 жыл бұрын
Ahh. I haven't really used very many of my newest ones, so that may be why I haven't had any problems yet. I love the old set to death though and I'll definitely keep them and continue to use them, but for new pencils I'll look into some other brands. Thanks for letting me know!

A few days ago, I was searching Google for help with my art, after a while I stumbled upon this guy. I watched some videos and you were showing your books, and I was wondering what they were and they look really interesting, so I'll definitely be getting your books as soon as I can. :) After I was looking at your books on Amazon UK, I watched a load of your how to videos and still am right now because I'm needing some help for my art work for school. And now, I must say that you are an amazing artist, really.

Yeah me 3 (or 4). Once I start watching I can’t stop. I’m binging Crilley art vids when this tired mom should be recharging my batteries and sleeping...but I’m recharging my soul so that’s important too, right? Lol Thanks Mark so much for all your awesome work and sharing with us!

Thank you for this video!!! And all of them really! I love how you take the time to talk us through your steps and process, as well as your silly jokes! Wonderful teacher! Are you ever interested in seeing how the "students" interpretations turn out? Again thank you!

I was watching this on my uncle's tv,while he was doing some stuff near there not paying attention to what I was watching at all (the foreign language helped),and at 2:23 he stopped and looked at me wordlessly,but the way he looked at me was saying: "Boy,what the hell are you watching?". I was sort of looking at him like: "Man,not like it's MY fault!" It was quite embarassing...

Where do they sell those "Touch" markers and how much are they?
@goldieoswald11 жыл бұрын
They sell them at micheal's and hobby lobby. They are VERY expensive.

I just bought the paper since i saw how you were able to make the prismacolor premieres so smooth and because i always use black, i only can find a single black prisma without buying more colors at the same time. I FINALLY HAVE SMOOTH LINES

Great video and I totally appreciate that you tell us to find out what tools work best for us personally. That shows me what a great teacher/person you are!! Still, it is great to have some kind of a guide line to work with! I wasn't sure tho when you started talking about the paints you use. Are they acrylic paints? I know you use water colors, (Thanks Mom!) but you lost me after that with the tubes. I use to paint with oils and the tubes can look alike. Thanks Mark!!! :)

Love your videos! I have learnt a lot from watching them. I enjoy when I can watch whole drawing without the fast forwarding. You are an amazing artist thank you for your time and sharing them. Can’t believe you create such masterpieces with few items...thought I’d have to spend millions to acquire your drawing materials. I’ve just ordered a set of the 150 Prismacolors and i haven’t received them yet.... but have been worried because now I’ve read tons of comments regarding the quality of them. Saying the leads all break and all the cores are off center. Do you have any of these problems?

Thank you for showing what those tubes of watercolors look like. I honestly had no idea that you could buy watercolors that didn't come in dried forms. Same with the gouache and how you can mix colors into it--I'll have to give both of these a try sometime! :) Can't wait for "Brody's Ghost" 5! Thanks again and take care!
