Gertjan Van den Broek you think hamill is coming back from what he thought about the last Jedi? Are you kidding? It literally ruined the whole new trilogy. Maybe if the second movie had meaning instead of just killing off the best characters and most loved ones then the whole trilogy and the third movie would have been better. They sound so smug these writers because they made the story and they know mark hates them for what they have done. “It’s the realization that Luke isn’t Luke”... why the fuck wouldn’t Luke be the Luke we know? Rian Johnson wanted to subvert expectations because he hates Star Wars.

It's subversion for the sake of subversion and thinking it's avant garde. Void of logic. No respect for the past. Intentionally destructive. Some major miscalculations and incompetence happened all around, especially above Rian Johnson's level. Someone hired and approved this script, paid the bills, gave him the go-ahead. Reboot the trilogy. And do it soon.
@sahirkhan28355 жыл бұрын
Gold Fishy It’s absolutely not subversion for the sake of it. It’s about Rian’s take on how these people are PEOPLE. This is why Luke’s life has worn him down. And Rian’s realisation that JJ had no answers and no plan, so let’s get rid of the one-dimensional Snoke and let’s focus on the real meaty piece: Adam Driver. Then let’s offer a surprising and tragic answer to the mystery of Rey’s parents by revealing they’re just junkies who sold their daughter off. And he wanted to move on from the old cast and genuinely focus on the new stuff, rather than rely on endless callbacks. There’s a difference between ‘respect’ to past and ‘clinging to the past’. Every choice he made was quite logical. These choices may not be escapist and ‘Star Wars’ enough for the fans but that just means he was the wrong man for the job, not that he’s bad at what he does necessarily. And given the fact that he’s just released an excellent, intricately plotted and perfectly executed mystery film, it’s fair to say he knows exactly what he’s doing.

@@sahirkhan2835 Part of being a good director is knowing your genre, understanding your audience, and respecting the heritage if it's a sequel. Three areas Rian failed to accomplish. Yes, he's a great director otherwise. Brick is fantastic. Also, characters are not PEOPLE. They are representations of reality, not reality itself. There is a necessary economy to film-making and it needs to function on many levels simultaneously. Rian created an illogical story heavy on social commentary and not much else.
@MrTREEHUNTER225 жыл бұрын
@@sahirkhan2835 Success in a film doesn't validate another. M. Night S. (Don't wanna spell that last name lol) made tons of great movies but he also made The Last Airbender. Just because someone is capable of making a good movie doesn't mean they aren't capable of making a bad one. And subversions don't necessarily mean that they fix problems of unoriginality. In fact Rian creates even more problems by adding these subversions. Luke tosses his father's lightsaber. This is his FATHER'S LIGHTSABER. The man was willing to due for his father but once he sees it he tosses it. Rey's parents being nobody's would've been a wonderful subversion if Rey ever had to work for her power. It would've solidified that the power she has, she has earned, except in reality her character is so bland and poorly written that she doesn't deserve or earn any of the power she has Rian's job should've been carrying the story over from Force Awakens. If you remember, Vader never really was around for a New Hope. Sure he was the main antagonist but he was never really built upon other than the fact that he's evil, he was once good, and he's powerful. So Snoke's lack of character in ep7 is totally understandable. Rian didn't kill Snoke because he was one dimensional. He killed him because he didn't want to write anything clever for him and wanted to surprise the crowd. That's something he loves doing, and though I haven't watched Knives Out, apparently it's doing well and good for him. JJ gave him the setup (as unoriginal as it was) and what Rian should've done was take the time to develop the Luke-Rey relationship as well as the Kylo Snoke relationship. This would certainly be something new because we've rarely seen dark side training and it would've been a perfect way to build all 4 characters. People don't want endless callbacks but people also want what they love to be respected. Perhaps the largest mistake Rian made was fucking with Luke. For some reason Rian has this perception of Luke that he's a god and that we the audience needs to know that he's only human. Except the audience has known that he's just human ever since the beginning of Star Wars! Luke fails and fails and fails all throughout the OT and we love him because he doesn't let anything keep him down. He somehow always finds the power within himself to do what's right even if it means that he dies. That's why we all fell in love with Luke. Not because he was a hero, but because he was someone we could relate to. We all stumble and fall in our path and Luke inspired the same feeling within ourselves. We should pick ourselves back up and keep going. Now something really funny though is that Rian preaches at how we need to shit on Luke to make him "realistic" but Rey has barely had any sort of trials in her life, yet she's the strongest Jedi in history for some dumb reason. What exactly has she failed at? What hardships have shaped her into a better person? How has her character grown throughout the series? Why should we feel excited for her? Why should we feel sad for her? We never get these questions answered because Rey is a marysue. There's no depth, just power.

"In this trilogy he's not Luke Skywalker. He's Obi" Just shows how much they Fundamentally misunderstand Luke, Obi Wan, and the franchise. Obi Wan didn't abandon anyone or his Jedi beliefs. He stayed loyal to the Jedi and to Luke for years, watching, protecting. And later teaching. Whereas TLJ Luke abandoned his friends, family, and the Jedi ways. It shows how superficial they view the franchise. “Luke is old, and alone. Obi Wan was old and alone. They are so similar. We are great writers”. There’s nothing similar to the depiction of these characters. Their motivations are polar opposites. Obi Wan was selfless. Luke was selfish.

dude he didn't agree with anything they did with his character. he criticised the film time and time again. you can tell he can't stand Rian Johnson and that he also had some issues with JJ. Just because you like the last jedi doesn't mean Hamill did. Are you gonna tell me Alec Guinness loved the originals? What about Harrison Ford? I'm not stubborn, Hamill was very vocal for months about his views on TLJ, he tried to tone it down a lot there is obviously a lot more he wanted to say but tried not to be disrespectful. Eventually he realised, with the help of Kennedy or Iger or someone that he can't keep talking negative about TLJ. So he shut up like a good professional. Almost everything Luke did in that movie was out of character, Hamill knew that and didn't like it. Tom Kane who has voiced various characters in Star Wars spoke out against The Last Jedi at celebration this year, criticising the Holdo character and the fact they killed off Admiral Ackbar. Hamill did not agree with the direction the new trilogy, especially TLJ has gone in, he was vocal about it for months. There are full interviews available online in text, video and audio. Hamill started to praise TLJ after it came out because he had to. You are the one living in a fantasy world where Hamill is probably your idol but TLJ is your favourite film and it pains you to see him disagree with you. And if Hamill somehow magically changed his mind and looooooooved the movie, means next to nothing. It split the fanbase, people who hated the prequels worship them now. Disney and Lucasfilm effed up. Whether you liked the movie or not you have to be able to admit that

@sahirkhan28355 жыл бұрын
rjtomato How is it because of TLJ that ROS is a mess? It’s a mess because JJ didn’t have any answers, he just knew he didn’t like Rian’s. And he wasn’t going to build on them. Rian didn’t do anything to undo JJ’s work, he just went a different way with it. But JJ spent most of ROS actively undoing Rian’s work instead of picking up the pieces and telling a good story. And he desperately brought back to Emperor to paper over the cracks. No competent director does any of this. ROS is entirely JJ’s fault.
@xBornChampionx5 жыл бұрын
Sahir Khan Lets just be clear, I’m referring to the writing not the directing as which your comment remarks. The writing in which at the top of my head JJ did episode 9, Rian did 8 and I’m pretty sure (forgot his name) the writer of two of the three original trilogy movies. I want to also make it a fact, not an opinion, that Rian DID undo the story telling episode 7 set up. There’s an endless list of story points that I can say but I’ll start with two KEY story arcs that obliterate your statement of ROS being its own fault “entirely” The first is Snoke. Killed him with no character development at all. His death is not impactful. The more time a character has on screen the more invested you will be of what becomes of them. The second is Luke fucking SkyWalker. Why in the first movie it was written as if Luke went into HIDING but if there is an emergency here’s a MAP TO FIND ME if you need me. TLJ: “Luke, I need you.” “No, I don’t want to be FOUND!” Not even going to explain that character flaw, but mention that I’m pretty sure a CHARACTER DEATH can greatly affect how you write Episode 9. So yes it is a mere fact that the faults of Rise of Skywalker is in fault because of The Last Jedi.

The pushback against Hamill in this clip is softly accusing him of having a big ego and wanting to dominate the new trilogy. I don't get that sense from Mark's public statements at all. Yes, he wanted a reunion with Carrie and Harrison, and he definitely wanted a bigger slice of the action. For God's sake, he was only on-screen for 30 seconds in TFA. Could anyone blame him for being disappointed in that? I think Mark was very clear-eyed about the fact this was not his trilogy. He just wanted to be the same Luke he was in the first trilogy, and he also wanted to be the wise mentor. But, JJ and Rian denied him on both. This Luke was completely unrecognizable. At least Obi-Wan tagged along through much of ANH and played a wise advisory role. Mark didn't even get to do that! So, Rian and that other guy's comments about Mark were just nonsense. The new trilogy shows contempt for elders rather than respect. Literally the film's vision is that the best thing the old guard can do is die and let the young ones "who already know everything they need to (paraphrasing Yoda in TLJ)" get on with it. Pffffft!

I wouldn't blame JJ. I would say JJ definitely built up Luke a lot in TFA that made us excited to see him at the end and more importantly what happened to him. Why he left behind a map. How powerful he is etc. Even though Luke didnt have a lot of screen time, he had a lot of mystical presence. Ofc Rian reversed direction and gave him lots of screen time but a bad excuse for why luke disappeared and basically nulled the hype. The only good thing Rian did was make Luke a mentor and mention the fall of the jedi. And at least make Luke die in front of twin suns. Even with RoS JJ is giving Luke screentime. Tbh JJ really should have stayed on to at least make the story cohesive. Ideally Trevarrow as he and mark hamill agreed the most on Luke's character

@@Megadog33 It was George Lucas's idea to make Luke a depressed hermit and an unwillingly teacher of a young woman. That was one of the few things that survived the gutting of his story treatments for a sequel trilogy. Not saying it was a good decision. But JJ is not to blame on this one. Now Rian probably took that concept a few steps too far though. For the next movies we just need a completely new cast set in a distant time in the future or past. Stop tampering with Lucas' vision of the Jedi in Anakin's arc. Disney needs to form their own original arc to unite the fanbase behind something truly new. Like The Mandalorian. The dude could have played a role like Gandalf, powerful but plays a position suited for his character. My father watched the OG Trilogy as a child, and when I was growing up, the prequels were coming out. But he made sure I watched the Originals, and Luke Skywalker quickly became my favorite hero. My father passed away before Disney bought Lucasfilm and The Force Awakens. Star Wars was special to him. It was something that made him feel like a kid again whenever we'd talk about it. Now that dark humor of me just has to say, I'm glad he is gone, so he didn't see what had happened to his favorite hero. It's a damn shame for sure. After the last Jedi, I was so sad for Mark Hamill. I knew going into the movie that something was wrong based on his interviews beforehand. But I held optimism, but we all know how that turned out. It's just...a damn shame...

Is Mark Hamill crying at the end? He looks so sad of what they have done to his character. It's upsetting to watch.

Michael Tardi that’s what I was wondering. If so, it truly is heartbreaking. In my SW universe, TLJ never happened.
@monkeys500006 жыл бұрын
Michael Tardi it's probably the result of some method acting. Mark had to go to a dark place in his mind for that scene. Either that or this was the last day of filming, and he's thinking that he might never play Luke again.
@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE6 жыл бұрын
More likely it's the result of playing a role you think has been completely miswritten, for a character you have played since 40 years prior, 3/4 of your entire life, and what you are known best for, and realising that you can't do anything but peacefully protest.
@Marcusjnmc6 жыл бұрын
it could have been over Luke, it could have been over a more personal trauma, either way it just goes even more to show how incredibly talented he is, the only good thing to come out of this movie imo is the greater recognition for Hamil's talent

Bladeslair well definitely Rian Johnson didnt seem to give a shizzle about Luke’s part. But I don’t know if that was due to the sjw agenda. Leia didn’t really fill those shoes until Rise of Skywalker and by the time stuff was going on in that movie Luke actually seemed like himself. And I felt like at that point she was Obi Wan mainly cuz Luke was already killed lol

Hamill is passionate about his character and appreciates the very fans you have thrown in the gutter. um... hello.. millennials made Star Wars what it is... i was one of those bumbling children that was in love with R2 on the big screen. what made it worth 4 billion wasn't box office revenue, it was from the toys and games that millennial children played with. when they made the prequels.. they made it for us.. the millennials. but, stop throwing that word around.. millenials are now at their prime.. and its not their fault this movie sucks.. its Disney, Kennedy, Abrams, Johnson... LUCAS....NOT people born within those decades... and its a lot of the fans fault for driving George to such an end that he would want to abandon such a thing..... i didn't quite understand the prequel backlash like some people don't the backlash to Disney's attempts... but i knew from day one, literally.. the day George signed it away to prove a point to his angry fans, i knew they would fail. and his point has been made.. and he is 4 billion dollars richer.. and Disney is struggling to find a way to catch up and make their money back. he wouldn't of abandoned it if so many people didn't reject the prequels. he knew full well this would happen.. he looked straight into the camera with Kennedy at his side.. telling future directors there is more to Star Wars movies than space ships and battles....... she also sat there and promised to take care of these characters....... if they had, so many people wouldn't be so upset. its over... nothing to look forward to... as a Millennial i have to say i have a whole lot of stuff that causes nostalgia... but what they have done has ruined it. i don't get the same joy i used to. its just over. at this point the thrill is joining the resistance against Disney and the stormtroopers that defend these films.

It's propaganda, meant to pass along a "See? This isn't so bad?" vibe. They're having Mark Hamill repeat the words he said in truth concerning his dislike for the character, only they have Mark saying those same words in a calm fashion, spliced with commentary and behind-the-scenes footage that makes us think Mark was okay with it after all. The idea is to sell an illusion that will hopefully quell the rage of Star Wars fans upset by Rian's complete mishandling of Luke Skywalker.
