I had the incredible experience of spending a few hours on the set of NCIS and having multiple conversations with Mark Harmon. I can't fully describe his kindness and lack of ego. My son, a Down syndrome guy who is a leukemia survivor, is a Leroy Jethro Gibbs fanatic. The Make A Wish Foundation arranged a visit for my son, daughter and I on the set near LA in March of 2019. I thought that we would get a short tour and maybe a quick intro and an autographed picture. I could not have been more wrong. Mark Harmon met us at the door, calling my son's name. He was clearly busy that day, but he found 10 minutes or so every hour to spend with us during the 4 hours that we were scheduled to be on the set. Yes, they scheduled us for 4 hours! When the time was up, I thanked everyone and asked that someone call our transportation. Mark Harmon came over, walking quickly, and asked me if my son was feeling OK. I replied that he was but that it was time for us to go. Mark said, "You don't have to leave yet if Nick feels like staying. You haven't seen the ship, Gibb's basement, the diner" and continued to name things that we had not yet seen on the set. He had been keeping track of us the entire day and knew exactly what we had done. He found us for conversations and pictures many times during the visit and then insisted that we stay longer than planned. We stayed another 2 hours for a total of 6 hours on the set.and ate a meal with many of the stars and an incredible team of writers and staff, all of whom were incredibly kind. Mark and everyone who extended such an amazing welcome to us had absolutely nothing to gain from their generosity. That is just who they are. Of all the successful people that I have ever met, I can say that this guy and the NCIS team deserve every bit of it. Mark Harmon was exactly as he appears in this interview with Stephen Colbert except that, because he was not in an interview setting, he never spoke much about himself; the focus was on us as his guests. Amazing person!

Which - was pretty damn cool at the time! Otherwise it wouldn't have been in the window of the tux store. No. I didn't enjoy that part of the interview at all. Maybe I'm just too empathetic.

@@kateluxor2986 I know, you're right 😊✌ ...I'm just a very sensitive person, mega empath. Drives my husband nuts. Just imagine you hand picked an outfit right now for a special occassion. First day of school. You're really proud of it then, and still think it's cute today. You show someone today, and they talk about how ugly it is. I guess what I'm trying to say, it would have made me feel better if Mark ALSO thought it was ugly. But he was defending it. Not once did he agree with Stephen... and imagine doing that to your friend today!!!! Your friend Shows you an outfit they love and you say to them it's so ugly, not even they can make it look good. I guess it would be honest...but it's hurtful too. Like a wife proudly wearing an outfit, showing her husband, and he says it's so ugly not even she can make it look good. Again, yes, it would be honest...but unnecessarily mean. I'm realizing that it's hard to explain. I just don't like hurting someone's feelings. If you're wearing something and love it, I would NEVER tell you it's ugly and make fun of it - especially if you didn't ask me for my opinion. To me that's just straight up mean, something a bully would do. Damn! Sorry for this being so long 🙈🤣 Thanks for listening 💚😊✌

For those who don't know, this is Mark Harmon's dad: Thomas Dudley Harmon (September 28, 1919 - March 15, 1990), sometimes known by the nickname "Old 98", was an American football player, military pilot, actor, and sports broadcaster. Harmon grew up in Gary, Indiana, and played college football at the halfback position for the University of Michigan from 1938 to 1940. He led the nation in scoring and was a consensus All-American in both 1939 and 1940 and won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the Associated Press Athlete of the Year award in 1940. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954. During World War II, Harmon served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Forces. In April 1943, he was the sole survivor of the crash of a bomber he piloted in South America en route to North Africa. Six months later, while flying a P-38 Lightning, he was shot down in a dogfight with Japanese Zeros near Kiukiang in China.

What wonderful insights into Maulden and Caine, two noble giants of the industry. Loved for their talents and graciousness. Mark Harmon has and is having an interesting life. He seems so down to earth.

I think he looked adorable in that tux. He looks even better now. How is that possible? What a sweetie.

FWIW, I met - and got stoned with - George Carlin at a coffeehouse in Ft. Lauderdale just before he went on The Tonight Show. Funny and socially-aware caustic, treated our band as old buds - and shared some great new buds. 😉 He was for real, told it like he saw it. Wish somebody in WashOutTown would do the same.

What an amazing run. Not his career (which is great), but the people he's been privileged to meet.

Indeed; we live in a time of appreciation and … let's face it … adulation.

I have NEVER liked Micheal Cain - but got to admit my estimation of him went up after this - the real hero of the story is Karl Malden - I had never heard of this guy - primarily a "character actor" according to wiki - but one who not only stood up for the 'little guy' even though he wasn't a big name star

@@juliaconnell Absolutely. Karl Malden is us.

I know! 🥰 he took stephens insult about the tux very gracefully "not even you can make that look good". ....what an a$$hole stephen was about that! So disappointing.
@2011joser4 жыл бұрын
A dorable In defense of Stephen, he knew there had to be a story behind the tux. Mark proved his hunch right, even John Wayne agreed with Stephen! Mark was very gracious.
@adorable38174 жыл бұрын
@@2011joser I know what you mean 😊✌ Yes, Stephen could have worded it better. You know, less insulting. It's a fine line with jokes sometimes. There's a fine line between kidding and roasting. It would have been a WHOLE DIFFERENT story if Mark was making fun of himself and the tux....but clearly he was not. Mark was put in the awkward Position of defending his 1973 taste in tux. Bottom line, that part made me cringe, and uncomfortable - and feel sorry for Mark. 😊💚🎄
