In this video we walk around the Petty Museum in Randleman NC with stories about the artifacts from legendary crew chief Dale Inman and Richard's daughter Rebecca Petty Moffitt! There is some serious NASCAR history on this property including the property itself. The museum buildings are actually the former Petty Enterprises race shop facilities and the still active Pettys Garage! We have a separate video with Dale about the history of the buildings and another video with Richard himself showing us the house he grew up in next door! Make sure you are subscribed and check out the channel for more videos like this one!

I worked for a small underfunded Truck series team in the early 2000's Many times the Petty's "lent" us things from fuel cans(far too often) crewmen and an engine(once) They were and are a class family both on and off the track

They all are humble . I can’t remember any of them ever being about themselves. It never was I did this or I did that. Always WE! Richard, Dale, Kyle, Lee, and the few times Maurice ever did interviews, it was always the same. The only exception may possibly in the Petty Blue documentary, Maurice took responsibility for that oversized engine in the 80’s. However, that is the only time I recall. Very humble family. And it trickled on down the generations. You can see that. Sharon, Lisa, and Rebecca as well

I was a fan of Adam Petty and it was so sad when he passed. I remember that they started talking about head and neck restraints.. and then Dale died pretty soon afterward. Who knows how many lives the HANS device has saved in the past 20 years.

There's no way to know and it a great thing that we don't have to worry about that anymore. Since I've followed it mid 70s NASCAR seemed to have pretty good safety record as far as the cars went. I'm sure fire was and is the worst fear. The roll cages were bullet proof and the belts and all. They had the 5 pt. harness. Biggest improvement I think is with the seats from early 2000s on and the Hans and safer walls. Driver don't get crushed or have stuff hit them from the outside. It's the driver hitting on the inside. That sudden decrease from 180 90 whatever to basically 0 that is violent. The impact that Earnhart had is that kind. Yet I've seen many drivers walk away from crashes just like his but not him. With the #3 there was no middle. On the track he was your guy or you "hated" him. I was a Petty fan but also a Ford guy Elliot, Martin, Jarrett. Earnhart was just another tough driver. He was good. I thought what he did with Elliot at Charlotte was bs. I couldn't stand him after that. Then he got that black car and thought he had something more to prove just wrecki everyone. T. Labonte at Bristol. But you always need the one villain the guy you love to hate. Loved to see him not win at Daytona for so long. Or Gordon beat the pants off him. It wasn't as fun after he was gone though.

My dad has an old picture of Richard petty at a local race track that used to be at Riverside Park in Agawam Mass. Story goes one of the local modified Drivers Bob Polvalerie Dressed up as "the king" knowing Richard would be there. Richard got such a kick out of it he came up to him. Stole his hat. Then gave him his. That's when my dad took the picture of them dressed the same wearing each others hats. Mike Joy actually started his career announcing at Riverside park. Six flags bought the amusement park and tore out the track to build the superman roller coaster. I was there for the last race, never been back to the park since. Keep up the awesome videos. The history is amazing. When I was a kid I loved Nascar in the late 90's early 2000's.

Porting and polishing a cylinder head or a pair of them makes a difference. Usually a huge difference. I'm sure as you know they're are many other little things you can do cc-ing the chambers, smoothing sharp edges of the flashing in the cc. Then if you can get to a flow bench oh baby you can clean people's clocks and they'll never be able to see what you did. It's the most HP gain for your $ Not buying any extra parts! I've seen guys open the entire area where the guide comes through including shortening the guide. They don't last long but if you're racing, no big deal. I had an instructor at UTI in PHX, AZ. Jerry Sefranek. Big Ford guy. He ran a 351W in a '66 Mustang coupe, FMX A/T. At this time there were no affordable heads for the Windsor. Exhaust flow on Ford SB heads is notoriously shitty. Too damn small. He'd grind the ports out until he hit the water jacket and weld it back up. Crazy! He made his own intake manifold. I think he was using Chevy rods and also the ex. valves too. His son would drive it running consistent low 11s 11.20 in daytime down to 11.15, 16 at night.

Better car than the Pontiac. Pontiac had too short of a trunk lid and did not create as much down force on the rear of the car. Richard had the same problem with it. Ever notice it spun out from going lose in the corner? Very ew had success with the Ponitacs back then.

I went to the petty museum in '97. Met the Petty's... all of them at the time. I have some signed valve springs, tires, shocks, springs, and a couple private things from the shop.... (I was 10yrs old at the time, and from a *Drag Racing* family, but it didn't matter to the Pettys! - they treated us like Family!)

I sorta cringe when I hear Dale Inman correct himself when he says "we"- there's no way Petty Enterprises would have been as wildly successful as they were without him. I get his total reverence for Richard and I admire his humble demeanor, but he deserves all the accolades and yes- it was "y'all", Dale. Awesome video, I really enjoyed the Petty's Garage section- that was the only area I didn't get to see when I visited the museum. It's so heartwarming to see the race shop put to good use and not left to decay.

I remember hearing people say “ he drove with the best of both Richard, Lee and Kyle”. Sad that he never got to get and part of me feels had he lived, Adam would’ve taken Thad under his wing and helped him. Especially would’ve loved to see him in a Mopar. Great video

I saw some pictures a drag racer sent me 20 or more years ago when he was trying to buy the crashed 43 Jr Barracuda (there were at least two of those) They had dug up several cars when excavating for the new building (in 99?) and the pic showed the crumpled Barracuda along with a few stock cars, one looked like a big finned late 50's Plymouth or something. At that time Richard didn't want to sell the wreck and would not authorize it being rebuilt and displayed as a Richard Petty car. I guess he changed his mind. It atill bothered him because of the accident but it's an important part of history and sure nice to see it displayed there.

That;s the image he projected at or on the track. It even carried over to the fans. Here's a story that he didn't want people to know about. When Dale Jarrett won his first WC '96 I believe, he and his family had to fly to NYC for the awards ceremony. The only person around there who had a plane big enough to carry his whole family was Dale Earnhart. So he thought he'd give it a shot see about renting his plane. If Dale said 'no' he wasn't out anything. So Earnhart says he can use it. When Jarrett gets back from NYC a few days go by and he gets the bill from Earnhart. It said, "Dale, Congratulations on winning the WC Championship." No Charge.- Dale Earnhart.

This was awesome. So glad I stumbled across it. Lifelong Petty fan here; got a 74 Charger in the garage with a license plate frame that I bought at the museum and 43 stickers on the windows. 43 Forever.

I have always loved the Petty family. Richard was my driver from the time I was a little kid. Still in my late 50's now. And still pull for the Petty cars.

I've been to the Petty Open House numerous times..used to hold it each July on the off weekend after the Firecracker 400 @ 'Tona..RP would sit in a rocking chair on the front porch of the old homeplace and sign autographs / take pics for 2 days..8-10 hrs at the time..tour the museum and free parking..Everything was free except for what souvenirs/food u bought. 50k plus...line 4 deep as far back as u could see from all over the world..just to get a autograph and pic with the King...

Every year in September or October Randelman NC (just below where Richard lives) there's a Nascar day with Richard signing autographs and Dale's Daytona car in display. Y'all should look it up. It's not much but hey figured I'll tell ya.

Petty's Garage parts on bad to the bone! Had a '15 Challenger Scat Pak. I installed the strut tower braces, adjustable point front & rear sway bars with beefed up end links and even more parts that I can't even remember. Every part from PG is top notch. Welds are amazing & they aren't painted, they are powder coated to your specifications/color. You definitely get race quality parts when you order from PG.

Dale is 86? I never would have guessed that by looking at him. Yes please go see the Wood Brothers Losing Adam was a big kick in the gut. You asked a question I always wondered though, too, why did they have him in a Chevy. Still no answer, lol, but I would have asked too. Dale is right, Adam was going to be the real deal, that's the sense I always had. The directions for the old Monogram kits call that bar in the cage the Petty bar. Salvinos JR has all that tooling now, you're probably aware they've reissued a lot of those old kits. That car having 1-93 stamped in it means probably Rick Wilson was the first to drive it.

This pertains to you asking why Adam's cup car was a chevrolet. I thought that Kyle was asked that in an interview. It seems to me ( brain fog after many many years ) that the chevy's had a large aerodynamic advantage at the time over pontiac. I KNOW on of Kyles main goals for Adams team was to make absolutely sure that Adam had the best of the best equipment. That is also why Kyle switched from the 44 car to the 45 car after Adam's passing. They didn't run dodge because dodge was not yet back in nascar in 2000 ( the year Adam passed ).

Could you imagine having 10mins to grab whatever ya could to keep outta these shops your visiting a guy could put together a pretty Amazing collection. The amount of money just sitting on those engines stands and the old 1 off speed equipment. I would stack up hemi's and all the drag racing stuff and the car. Gotta grab a few of the winged cars. The memory on these fella amazes me also. They can remember a certain Sunday from 30-50 years ago like it was yesterday . Thank you for doing these walk throughs this is history that will be lost as these pioneers pass on.

I did some digging when you brought up Adam Driving a Monte Carlo instead of a Grand Prix for Cup, what I found that Petty Enterprises has Chevy/Pontiac instead of just having a sole make, as you said the next year they went back with Dodge

*I'd be intrested in knowing more about the Wood Brothers.* I've got a Richard Petty signed and raced front fender. This one has the General Mills white glove mascot called "Lefty" on it. I wish I knew which race it came from. It might have been from an important race. Probably not. But who knows. I had it displayed then I moved and never took it out of storage. My adult kids aren't intrested in nascar anymore so it's just sitting in storage. A waste I always wanted to build an old Royce into a drag car.

When Dale was trying to think of the header makers, the ones I remember when I worked there was...Herb Gebler in the 70's. Herb was from the Richmond, Va. area and would come down to the Petty shop and hand fit our headers. Not sure whatever happened to Herb. The second guy I remember was.....Mark Lineberrier in the 2000's. Mark was a local header maker who worked out of his shop. I would take the stainless steel tubes to his shop behind his house. He had a jig for the headers the Petty engines needed then and he made them there.

Disabling your kids and your pets. Cure teething gum pain by rubbing the gums with whiskey. Great stories and real cars. You sure bring back a lot of memories for me. I as at Watkins Glen when Richard won. I heard Chrysler engineers talking before the race. They knew they had a lot more power and speed than Ford 's did. So they said just let the Fords run their hearts out , then with 10 laps to go catch up and pass the Fords to win for Chrysler. Also Chrysler knew they did not have the reliability to run flat out all afternoon.

Re: The Reddit myth on the '92 car, if you look closely, you can see the burn marks on the left side and left rear. That definitely could not be a backup. Indeed, the 43 decal itself is burned.

I remember being at the museum many years ago when it was out front of the property in what used to be a garage , very small , and as you entered , there was a cardboard cut-out of Richard in his driving suit . They would build the race cars out back where they had a line of garages . Looks a whole lot different today .
