it's a bit ironic that the shojo style is all about making the characters look like "pretty boys" yet I find the shonen style character much more attractive

Hey markcrilley i just wanted to let you know that your how to draw manga videos are absolutely incredible. They just blow my mind how professionally well you draw and shade in. Your videos have helped me a whole lot when drawing manga. Please continue to make more videos and to showcase your teachings. I'm honored to be known as one of your students on the other side of the internet.

when doing these videos, Mark leaves the paper stationary so it stays in frame and you can see what he is doing, but he, like most artists, usually spins the page around when working so as to get straight, clean lines and not have to draw at weird angles. consequently, some of his drawings here end up with a messed up line from time to time. he's also admitted that he doesn't really have steady hands.
@pielord3332111 жыл бұрын
Ermm, Mr. Crilley, you appear to have made a slight blunder. According to my Japanese teacher (she taught us this so we wouldn't make this very mistake), "shoujo" is the word for manga targeted at girls. You have spelled "shojo," the word meaning virginity.
@totallynotasoggybanana11 жыл бұрын
The correct word would have to be "Shōjo". So Mark's version should be fine too.

So, main differences: Shojo/shonen: - effeminate/masculine - curvy&flowing/angular&rough - big "eyes, ears, mouth, and hair" / small(er) " - small "neck, nose, eyebrows, cheek space" / big(ger) " Great video! I find that the two drawing styles follow the idealized (though cartoony) features of their target genders. I usually draw boys in shojo style to have slightly more bowed/narrower shoulders, as you sorta did on the right of the pic for shojo. It just seems to fit better. Thank you! :D

I'm glad I read more stylized Shoujo! I definitely see very younger focused shoujo being more generic and closer the image on the left, where older (to almost josei works) vary at style and don't draw males so womanly. (Not that it's really an issue, it all depends on the artists preference! But I definitely don't fancy the more generic style of shoujo works.) But I really try and combine what I like from both styles in my own work. :)

i dont know about shojo, but in shonen the style varies alot, you have more realistic stuff like death note, and really cartoony stuff like Shaman King or One Piece. So the way you draw the eyes, nose, mouth, hair or chin(actually bleach is a shonen manga and Kubo draws the characters chins pretty pointy) is really diferent from artist to artist. Anyways, really awesome video mark, Good job

Mr.Crilley can you do another how-to-draw video of a side view version of a face? -Or to put it in another way- profiles? I found it to be very difficult to draw the head and placement of the facial features.Thanks! Hope you see this :)
@DetectiveBlutoMindpretzel12 жыл бұрын
Maybe the difference is in sharpness of the eye, length of the eye lashes, and eye brows. Shoujo eyebrows are smaller than shounen. Shounen has sharp and masculine features and opposite for shoujo.

If you're talking about styles: shoujo's style is more "pretty". Their lines are more round and soft. Shounen styles are more bold. You should just google both styles and compare side by side images and you'll see a difference
@ChocolateFantasies11 жыл бұрын
The guy on the left just got 10000000 times more shoujo when you added the blushies.
@Flokker12 жыл бұрын
In shoujo style blushies tend to be exageratedly broad lines across the entire face, which at often times seems to make them seem like they're in shock, as OFTEN shounen uses the exact same style of blushies to signify a shocking moment, other shounen like to incorporate the blushies from shoujo, only however if the style is more comicly than serious, you won't see this kind of blush in manga borderlining seinen, unless it's stuff like To love-ru, To love-ru darkness.
