Careful of the animal manure Moreno. I’d run an assay on it before you use it en masse. Lots of the feed the animals consume has been sprayed with pyralid compounds (a very persistent herbicide), which remains in the animal manure and can then badly affect your crops. The feedlot owner would not necessarily know what his feed has been sprayed with, which is why you need to test it thoroughly. Charles Dowding did a couple of excellent videos on it. This is a terrific video - thanks. I’m a flower grower in Australia, where we’re heading into autumn!

Leuke video. Ik ga zelf volgende week beginnen met de eerste kolen voorzaaien, ik kom uit centraal europa en de wintwrs hier kunnen erg streng zijn. We hebben deze winter niet veel vorst gehad maar ben bang dat het straks in Maart of April nog vriezen gaat. Het is hier 2 jaar terug in maart nog -28 geweest, denk dat er bijna geen gewassen zijn die daar tegen kunnen. Ik moet dus altijd even geduld hebben.

Great video Moreno and very informative. just put down wood chip on my garden which i found on side of road , it made a great path way. How do you deal with carrot fly with your carrots and do you have wire worm issues with gardens that used to be grass. How do you deal with this. Hey Chris! We barely get carrot fly problems. Wire worms were in abundance though! Definitely the first season after converting the plot from grass to crops. Through constant applications of composts and some crop rotation (planting crops that are less vulnerable / or damage seems less noticeable) we've been able to handle them pretty well. At the moment there's not much wire worm pressure at all anymore. Invest in the soil and the soil will invest in resiliency;)

Using time in my pre-farming job to build an app that specifically helps with crop planning for market gardens. Default bed width, succession planning, calculate needed yields backwards and forwards ... gonna betatest it in a few years when I start my own farm :)

My 6 year old grandson just went out to take the kitchen compost to our chickens. The snow is frozen solid as it is 10 degrees F here right now despite the sun shining! This is 25 degrees below normal temps. It is going to be even colder next week and over the next 10 days. We are zone 5b/6a. Geesh. I love your videos! I know this is year later and you may not have time to answer any questions but I wonder if you transplant beets instead of direct seeding? JM Fortier always transplants from starts. I tried in the paperpot but that thing and I just can't get along. I'm selling it. It worked great for onions (which was the original intention for it's development) but it is too heavy for me. Your video on the 6row was a godsend. Thanks

Ive a suggestion/an idea and I don't know if you'll like it. It can increase your income. I know it's tough for small farmers even if it goes good for you but I wonder if you've a big enough house close to the farm, few extra rooms? Don't you want to start a small bed & breakfast beside your farm? Just a simple one with a special concept serving breakfast, eggs, veggies etc from the farm? Or letting the guests visit/help in the farm? I would love to do that with my kids 😄. We r lucky in Sweden that we can rent a small land in the city and plant some veggies but it's not the same to have the farm feeling. Think about it, like starting with renting out 1 big family room + 1 or 2 single/double room. I would do it if I could. Good luck with what you're doing

On owned land I'd probably want a camping/campsite, restaurant serving only farm grown produce and a small shop attached selling artisanal products from the farm. Hi. Really informative video. I've learnt so much in such a short video. Thank you. Can I just ask, do you put a membrane under your wood chips? I've just taken got an allotment plot and it was completely overgrown. I'm beginning to lay out the beds and was thinking of having woodchip paths. I've removed as much weed as I can, but some of the perennial weed roots seem to go on forever and I'm not sure I've been able to get them all out. Another problem I have is the plot is covered with weed seed that had fallen before I could get the weeds out. If you don't mind me asking, what would you advise? Thank you.

Hey Andrew, thank you! We normally buy it from another specialized compost facility a bit further than the current one. The one we bought it from now is strictly composting all organic material they get without paying any attention to it. The other company specializes in agricultural mixes and specific blends aimed for the farmers requirements. It's a bit more expensive but the end product is also much better.

Andrew James he explained in the video where he plans to get it in the future. Please rewatch that segment of the video and listen this time. Watching a video does you no good if you do not listen to the valuable information that he is giving all of us for FREE! He has made a deal with a local dairy farmer that is going to pile all of his cow manure in a field and allow it to decompose and turn into compost then they will transport it to his farm for use, but go back and watch the video again where you see the cows and he explains it better than my short answer here. @@moi7748 Hey Andrew. It took us a while before we found a company that actually don't sell their wood chips but simply throws it on big piles onto a parcel of land they own. I suggest you call every single tree cutting service in your area (that's what we did). Maybe you'll get luck this way. The company we normally buy high quality compost from is called "Agrivalor" in Alsace. There's also "Agri Compost 70" in Vesoul. I don't know their quality but that's another compost facility. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your videos. A question: wouldn't wood chips on the path attract slugs? I was told that they like to hide under moist wood, which is why we shouldn't use wood for walling off raised beds. THX

Gab The Chef if you do see a rise in slug population then turn your ducks loose in the field every couple of days and I promise you that you won’t have a slug within 5 miles of your crops after the first day or two. Slugs are a delicacy for ducks and they will love you for allowing them in the fields. They are also very good at just walking up and down the pathways and will not harm your crops at all unless they find a pile of tasty bugs on a leaf and then they may accidentally break a leaf or two trying to get to the bugs. You do have a flock of ducks don’t you? A produce farm cannot be successful without a flock of at least 4 ducks for insect control. It’s the best organic insect control you can buy and without them you are really gonna struggle with insect control and may need to use chemical controls which I haven’t had to use for years because the ducks take care of all of it. Plus it is entertaining and educational to watch. The ducks will find areas with insect infestations that you didn’t realize you had until you turn them loose. Don’t worry, the ducks will know exactly what to do, just set a couple a few feet inside of the garden or field and the others will follow and they will walk p and down each and every row till they are done. It is fascinating to watch. Good luck!!

Hey there! Good question. In severe cases any raw organic material could attract slugs. But since the pathways are always walked on and therefore compacted, we haven't seen any increase in slug populations. We do have them (both tiger slugs and Spanish slugs) but we also have a very active hedgehog on the property;)

In Utah I have to be careful of animal waste that is a byproduct of roundup hay. The roundup is fairly persistent but I believe it can be processed with time. Is roundup hay allowed where you are?

Magic! :) We plant crops that do well with dappled shade! We use large amounts of organic matter (both compost on beds and woodchips in the pathways). This takes care of the water holding capacity of the soils, fertility and distribution of nutrients throughout the entire system. And most trees we have are not very aggressive tree species. Where we have a large walnut tree, the crops do see some negative effects. Stunted growth, slower growth, mainly due to the large amount of shade the walnut casts on this specific place, and maybe the effects of juglone. We also keep the trees pretty tidy and prune for extra light penetration. Hope that helps!

Hey there. No problems with the brassicas. They tend to go for our chards! Simple bird netting will do the trick. In the video you see me installing some fleeces (which also works against birds), but in spring/summer you could use bird netting instead!
