#diykitchallenge22 Harley Benton Guitar Kit JA
60 second version:
• #DIYKitChallenge22 - 6...
‪@ThomannsGuitarsBasses‬
Perfecting the dirty pour method will take practice. I did one pour test prior to this jazz master and another after. I achieved three drastically different results. I think the thickness or amount of paint impacts the way the pigments dry and therefore impact the cells. I’m going to keep trying with less paint, less pouring medium and a thinner base layer. Once I can achieve repeatable results, I think acrylic pouring may be a more fun alternative to staining.
I have another test body to share in the next vid. And I’ll be doing one more additional vid on the acrylic pour process.
I’ll be posting a 60 second cut of this jazz master kit build as well.

Psychedelic is an understatement... I had a dream of having a guitar like this... First I tried it with my Fender electric bass... And now with no money for paints or a workshop to work... I have chosen to put stickers to my Squier by Fender Mustang... But your thing... is "work of ART"!!!... both the work of luthier and paint (like a true artistic painter!) and with your own music!! !... Congratulations and enjoy that beautiful guitar!!!...

Bro I wanted to do a pour paint on my guitar since 2020 and put it off for so long.... I began work forreal on a $50 strat knockoff I got from a pawn shop that wasn't working and began working in March 2022. Only now am I close to finishing. It was a pain but well worth the effort!

OMG, the waves of energy in the universe are sometimes crazy... I literally just spent the whole week looking at these Harley Benton kits... specifically the Jazzmaster JA version with the white "p90s"... and low and behold, you drop a new vid with Harley Benton kit later that week. Ahh, the power of manifestation. Love it!!!

Wow serendipity. I dig the guitar. It literally only needs three things. 1. The input jack was too tight. I couldn't get a cable to go in or out easily. 2. The "P90s" were terrible. 3. The frets were great. Didn't need leveling but did need a polishing. I looked at the frets under a microscope and there are scratches covering the ENTIRE fret. They must use a crowning file that grinds the whole fret from end to end. Other than those three things, the guitar is outstanding for the price.

Did you apply primer without sanding the sealer off? Isn't that a problem for primer adhesion?
2 жыл бұрын
great result. Simply dragging the paint cup over the body, like you did, instead lifting the cup up in one place, seems to be the way to go for a front routed body. Did you wait about 1-2 weeks for the acrylic to fully cure before clear coating? Well, maybe that'd only be an issue when going for a high gloss finish (the acrylic might shrink in the first 2 weeks).
@MarkGutierrez
@MarkGutierrez 2 жыл бұрын
The acrylic shrinks considerably. Shrinkage, or water evaporation, is something to consider when accounting for surface area and volume. I've tried this three times and I think using less paint so it spreads thinner over the surface yields less shrinking. I waited a little over a week before using the satin clear coat.

That's a great video and a great result. Thanks for showing us how you did it. I will be definitely looking into this technique further. Side note: Why do the kit company always use P90 pickups instead of proper Jazzmaster pickups in their kits?
@Fraik
@Fraik 2 жыл бұрын
Most cheap companies now can do accurate -ish strats and teles, but they still struggle with offsets.. at least now they can do a passable body shape, but the pickups and bridge are still completely wrong
@MarkGutierrez
@MarkGutierrez 2 жыл бұрын
On that note. The P90s that came with the kit are absolutely terrible. I couldn't get a clean sound. They were hot in a harsh way. The only way to get a decent tone out them was to roll off the volume and play with fingers very lightly.
@stuartp8658
@stuartp8658 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarkGutierrez The couple of kits I've done (strat - 1st build and 335), the pickups were by far the weakest part and were quickly replaced. As you experienced, very hard to get any decent tone from them.
@Thoracius
@Thoracius 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's because Strat, Tele, P90, basic humbucker, etc.-style pickups are basically commodities, thanks to the decades of cheap asian clones of Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, etc. These kits just use the absolute cheapest off-the-shelf components that are already available. Jazzmaster pickups are more of a specialty item.

What is the difference between pouring medium (flowtrol) and pouring oil, in your shopping list?
@MarkGutierrez
@MarkGutierrez Жыл бұрын
the flowtrol makes the acrylic paint "pourable". It needs to be liquidity enough to "flow". The pouring oil is what makes the "cells".

That was awesome. How smooth is the finish? Does the acrylic (when it dries) require any sanding to get it level? Or was that not a concern? Fantastic results How smooth is the finish? I saw satin clear coat, but did the acrylic dry to be all the same level/thickness?

Hey, I stumbled upon your video a couple of weeks ago and it inspired me in a way that I just purchased a kit and did my first experiments with this technique on scrap wood! :) But I have one question: What did you use for clear coat? I've been looking into 2k clear coats (which could be a problem for water based acrylics) and water based acrylic coat (which will not cure into a really hard layer like 2k would...) ... so, what did you use or what would you recommend? How sturdy is it in the end?
@MarkGutierrez
@MarkGutierrez Жыл бұрын
I used satin nitro from Stew Mac. Just one coat to seal it. Wasn’t really going for a gloss finish or a finish that buried the paint. It still had some paint texture to it. It did the job. The satin nitro is self leveling and doesn’t require sanding. Soon just sprayed the top and sides and let it cure. Done.
