For me it was an expensive camera and kit lens, or a ZVE10 + kit lens + the Tamron. So I went with the Tamron option. It's a beast. At night it lights up the whole backyard like it's daytime. I'm a big guy so I can handle it, but little people with little hands could find the Tamron set up to be a little unwieldy.

Thank you for this recommendation. I do a lot of handheld shooting. The Sigma 18-50 is a fantastic lens for the money, but with the Ronin RS3 Mini I was getting micro-jitters. Traded it in for the Tamron and haven't regretted it, despite the added bulk and cost. The lens stabilization is worth it, and the added reach is a bonus. I can even get reasonably steady video without the gimbal if needed, without IBIS! Nothing, alas, can fix the dreadful shutter roll of the ZV-E10; it's the one thing that makes me regret this camera, sometimes, but then I remember what it cost. And I'll be able to use this great lens and the Sigma 14 f1.8 on the next body (6700?).

I opted for the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 for my a6500 just because I wanted to keep it a small ,lightweight set up. I have ordered the Tamron 11-20 f2.8 to add a wide angle lens choice and also use my full frame Tamron 70-300 lens for the telephoto shots. I do wish the 17-70 was smaller as it really would make a fine travel lens, choice otherwise.

I prefer the 10-18 and 18-105 combination. Rarely need to change lenses, and when I do, it is to put on a f1.4 from the Sigma 16, 30, and 56 trio. That way I get power zoom, OSS, and low light performance with a smallish kit, and if I need to take just one lens, the 18-105 f4 PZ OSS is the most versatile lens for my kind of work.

@@artistjoh The 18-105 is a decent “do-it-all” lens but I’m a little disappointed in the sharpness (especially at the edges around 18mm) and the minimum focusing distance. It’s not terrible but I wish it was a little better in those areas for the price
@artistjoh
@artistjoh Жыл бұрын
@@Nicksperiments As you say, it is a decent performer, that while not perfect, it is the compromiser that becomes a "do-it-all" lens. Perhaps for stills photography the sharpness can be complained about, but lets face it, this was designed for video, and buyers are buying it for video, and it is plenty sharp enough for video resolutions, especially for KZbin. I also remember writing a message to Sony support before I bought it asking if it is parfocal or not. They answered that they had asked the engineers and they said it is not optically parfocal but is designed to communicate with the camera AF to keep it in focus as zooming so it is effectively parfocal. That was plenty good enough for me. There are plenty of technically sharper lenses that are not parfocal, and behaving as parfocal is what is most important to me. And the optically parfocal ones tend to be expensive. It also has a focal range that is very useful, from wide enough to use it as an only lens, to excellent tele reach on APS-C. And the power zoom is worth its weight in gold. At its relatively lowish price point it has to have compromises, but when balancing price, size and weight, parfocal behavior, power zoom, and good enough sharpness for video, it is a great choice for video shooters with limited funds. There is good reason why it tends to be well liked by most of those who use it, and most of us agree with you that it is "decent" and "do-it-all." and are happy with that :)

When you look at how much Sony 16-55G cost ($1200) and it comes without lens stabilization, Tamron 17-70 is an absolute bargain. It is not just for ZVE10, its size suits FX30 perfectly, and FX30 owners will be more happy to spend $800 on a lens hence I say Tamron 17-70 is the only lens you need for FX30.

When you factor in that the Sony 24-105 f4 full frame lens has the same reach (1mm wider actually), the same light gathering capacity (FF is at least one stop better compared to APS-C), optical image stabilisation, superior focusing, similar weight, then the only thing that stands for this lens is the price.

It is not a dreamy blur, it has the image doubling effect. and it has a strange effect where you can have things close to the camera and the distant images has the same amount of out of focus blur. And the Stabilization is wonky on Tamron. It locks and jerks weirdly. Common to Tamron. But beyond that it is a great lens for the price.

7:46... No, not exactly. The "f" number is not a unit and does not represent "how big the opening is in the back of the lens". This number is the result of a ratio, between the diameter of the front lens element and the actual focal lens of the item. It is a relative value, as opposed to the "T" number, more common in the cinema industry, which is the actual light transmittance capability of the item. It is crucial to be accurate when speaking about iris and all things related to, otherwise it creates this whole huge misunderstanding we see all around us about lenses, apertures, intensity of light reaching a sensitive surface (film or digital sensor).

Excellent review and exactly what I was looking for as I also want to purchase this combination. Remains two questions though. I have read a few times that the stabilization of the camera and that of the lens work against each other in video (strange image wobbles). Is that true? I don't see it in your images. I want to start stabilizing the video images that are too shaky anyway with the free Sony software: Catalyst browse. Do you have any experience with that? Thanks for your reply and greetings from the Netherlands.

Hi Mark, I've t watching a lot of your videos and Have a bit of a choice dilemma. I'm stuck between choosing a canon M50 M2 or a Sony zv E10 as a starter camera for KZbin, I've tried both . The lack of touchscreen on the sony is annoying , but the canon 's 30 min limit is also not great. What do you suggest

@@markwiemels thank you for your response. It’s really appreciated. We bought our 15 yr old son his first camera. I wanted something entry and hybrid that was versatile for him. I bought it with the kit lense since time was running out coming into Christmas. But my question also is in your professional opinion. What are two budget lenses for the Sony zv e10 in regards to replacement for the kit lense that would allow him to shoot close or extend out that has image stabilization with AF/Manual mode so that he can be ready with one lense instead of swapping to get a shot. And on the second lense, the best budget lense that has a f2.8 though full zoom with the same AF/Manul mode and features as I stated on the other lense. We are new to this and there are so many lense options but are trying to keep price point down for him but also get him into gear that is beneficial. Sorry for being so long winded.

Hi! A newbie question about lenses. I have the Sony ZV-E10 and I need a wide lens that won’t be a fish-eye lens. Maybe an 11mm or so. How can you tell if a wide or super wide lens is a fish-eye lens? When you go down to 10mm or so, is there necessarily a fish-eye effect? How can I tell that a lens is “normal” (no distortion around the edges)?
@markwiemels
@markwiemels Жыл бұрын
Fisheye lenses will be called fisheye, as a rule. Have a look at the reviews, on KZbin, of any given lens, for exactly how much distortion, or what kind of images, you can expect.

This point you make at 2:49 is kinda false information 17-70mm equals 25.5-105 on Sony APS-C F2.8 equals F4.2 on Sony Fullframe. So basically this is like the famous 24-105 F4 from Canon, just this one is only 200g more, got more features and is a full frame lens
@markwiemels
@markwiemels Жыл бұрын
f2.8 on APS-C is the same size opening and light throughput as it is on full frame. So while we can debate some equivalency to full frame, the 1.5 times thing is oversimplified, not exactly true.

@@Miguel-fm8xh if they are actually using the same scale as all photography lenses then yes. I suspect they are the same, but I think the focal lengths they quote are not the same (I think they are doing the equivalency calculation). So they may call it a 28mm when it’s actually a 4mm or something crazy, but I’m not really a phone camera expert, so not entirely sure.

But dude what does it take to find out what freaking lens you're talking about? Consistently and almost every video it's ridiculous LOL. It's not in any chapter if you have a chapter, it's not on the screen you don't show it anywhere and someone that might want to let you know scroll through quickly can't find anything until what a microsecond maybe even near the end. You got to do something about that it's very frustrating. Otherwise you're great.
