my parakeet Snow got attacked by a squirrel (i believe it wanted her seed) while she was in her outside cage. the cage got knocked over and the door opened. I wasn’t there at the moment to see this so she got extremely spooked and flew away. it was devastating as we had her for 7 years. There is a happy ending though. The next day i was outside and herd her calling me from a tree near my house. I know her specific tweets so i was certain it was her. i got help from my family and we brought her cage out to where i spotted her and guess what! she was done with being a “wild bird” so she flew right back in. it was amazing, and i’m so grateful that she survived through the the night. she sadly passed away but that was years later, and she had a very happy and healthy life.

I was just catching up on Marlene's vids when I came across your story! Thank goodness your birdie stayed safe! I probably would have been freaking out for the entire time, much like you most likely were. My fears with Tiki, our Sun who passed away almost 2 years ago now, were the bees, mosquitoes and the pair of hawks that live around here. My 16 year old daughter went out to see one that was making sounds in the peach tree like a young squirrel, saw him fly up to the back balcony; so Gen decided to check it out. This hawk, way larger than I ever thought they were that close up, dropped down to grab Gen's face, noticed that she wasn't some critter, and swooped down and flew sideways between this fence and bush right by the balcony! After that, my husband WILL NOT let me take out our Pineapple Green Cheeks, Momo and Pineapple (did not name Pineapple! Was from his previous parents!) outside until I build a stroller for them. Plus, since these two like to play in the window, and holler out at other critters, the pair of hawks know they live here. Sucks donkey butt, but what can I do now?

Helter Skelter wow..i’m glad everyone’s okay. it sucks that you have to be so cautious with your birdies but of corse it’s worth it to keep them safe. We sometimes take my cockatiel Mallow, who i have now, outside with us on a harness, but idk if that would help in your situation if the hawks are willing to get so close. As for mosquitos and bees, they never seem to bother him when he’s outside either in his cage or running around near us while we keep a close eye on him (his wings are clipped) the worst thing that will happen is he’ll see a larger bug fly by and get a bit spooked but that’s about it.

i don’t know how bad the bugs are in your area though, it might be a completely different situation from mine so idk

One time I was camping at this camp ground called Carol Lake, it's in Minocqua Wisconsin, and I was out by the water, and everyone else was back at the campsite. (it was still pretty early) I heard a splashing noise coming from the water, and I looked in and there was a Robin in the water. It kept flapping it's wings, and trying to get out, but it couldn't, because it was completely soaked, tired, and the ground kind of went like this ~| so the ground was just too steep for it to get up. I was on the dock next to it, and I went around onto the land in front of it, and I reached out my hand, trying to do it carefully so I didn't scare it even more, or fall in myself. Then I just put my hands under it, and scooped it up with both hands. I got up and I remember it's heart was beating so fast, but it seemed a bit calmer now that it knew it wasn't going to drown. It was soaked to the bone, and shaking like a leaf. I walked over to this sunny patch over by the grass, and this rock, and I walked over, and set it next to the rock, so that it could absorb some of the warmth from the sun, and dry off. Then I got up, backed away a few feet, and sat down in the grass. (I did this because it was obviously terrified of me too) It stayed very still, looking suspiciously. Then I guess it decided that I wasn't a threat, and it fluffed itself up, tucked it's feet under itself, and went to sleep. I stayed there, and watched over it until it was dry, and could fly away on its own. I wanted to make sure nothing hurt it, and it was ok. Luckily it turned out okay, and it flew away on its own when it woke up. This was back in 2012 so I was like 9, too. I also raised a baby robin once, before then. My brother was out on his bike, and he heard a loud chirping noise, and he saw a robins nest upside down, with one baby underneath it, and another baby laying a few feet away. The one that was under the nest was fat, bright pink, and featherless. The other one was smaller, and had sort of a yellowish tint to it. We figured it must be sick, because a lot of times when a baby robin is sick the mom will throw it out so it doesn't infect the other babies, and that was probably why it was further away than the other one. We put them both in a shoe box, and we fed them bits of worms that we had cut up into tiny swallowable pieces, and little tiny drops of water at a time. I named the fat pink one Peeps, and my brother named the yellowish one Jeffery. Jeffrey ended up dying, but we managed to raise Peeps, all by ourselves (I was 7 and my brother was 8 at the time,) we taught him to fly too, and then we started taking him with us outside. Eventually he started preferring to be outside, and he basically lived out there. We'd still bring food out there, and he would come and eat it, but he mostly got his own food. When it started getting cold out he left to fly south with the other birds. We were sad when he left, because we thought it was the last time we'd see him, but he actually returned next spring. It turns out robins actually go back to the same place they were born to have their kids. My mom was outside, and he landed on her head. We could always tell him from other robins, because he always walked different than they did. Normally robins hop, but he never did, he always did this weird waddle/run thing, like a human. It was that spring that we discovered Peeps was a girl. She had made a nest, and had three babies in the tree outside my window. Eventually we stopped being able to tell her from the others, but we took comfort in knowing she was out there, with her own little baby Peeps. She's probably dead now, but her babies probably had babies, and I like to think she was like this legend that they passed down, about the robin who was raised by humans. 😂

Lol Jersey squarking at it. That’s what they do in the wild. Once we found a baby Galah on the road & we picked it up & put it the car in a towel & were driving along and all of a sudden it just jumped up and opened its wings out and schreeched AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!! SO LOUD. Scared everyone half to death! I guess that’s their defence strategy & it’s very effective!!

MORE SISTER !!! I ADORE HER!! She's a riot! I love her being funny, loving on the babys, always smiling and joking interactions with you and I adore how she loves the birbys!! You HAVE WARN PEOPLE AND DO VIDEOS ABOUT THOSE TEFLON PANS AND OVEN SPRAYS!!!!!!!! A family I know had been cooking. Mom took a phone call and had a pan on the stove...in 30 seconds the oil got too hot and made smoke and the pan burned. The teflon smell, NOT THE OIL, KILLED an entire flock of budgies that she had in her family for 20 yrs. These budgies started out as a pair, who laid eggs and had children then they added a 3rd unrelated bird who then mated with the two daughters and those baby's had babys so now they had 8 grandbabies of the original birds plus the unrelated boy for a total of 22 birds!! They hand fed and adored the 2 clutches so the family refused to give any of the budgies away...then the disaster happened and 20 yrs of birb family was gone in just minutes!! Those 30 seconds of distraction and burning that teflon pan made the smoke alarms all go off and all the birds died from that teflon pan smoke and maybe a few had heart attacks from the smoke alarm! The firemen said they've seen that a lot!! The smoke is incredibly toxic. Animals can survive a house fire but NOT IF TOXINS ARE IN THE SMOKE FROM THE HOUSE!!!!! YOU CANT EVEN BEGIN TO IMAGINE HOW TOXIC those pans and many, many other average household items are when they become hot or on fire!! There are some wood paneling that is used in walls especially in houses built in the 70s.. when that is ignited it is literally like breathing cyanide. It was outlawed but many, many homes still have that paneling and other super toxic building materials the "leak" their chemicals out into your environment and you don't even know it! some of the newer flooring is highly toxic too! It doesnt even have to be warm or burning and its poisoning or causing cancer to you and your birds. Wall covering for some reason are just super toxic. The glues that are used to apply wall panels or wall paper, then there's the paper itself with toxic paint ! And birbys love to tear up the walls and bite at the different materials a home has!! Careful to protect your birds from humidity in the air too! Watch What you put into your bath water and laundry too!! That humidity from laundry and baths travels throughout the house too. I forget now but a crazy bird lady friend (like me and YOU) of mine was having a bath soak and then showering with some herbal thing her naturopath suggested for relaxation and her free flight birds all died from breathing in the herb that was in the humid air!! Her bath water carried the humidity all around the house! Their toxicology revealed that they'd breathed in the fumes in the air and the herb had caused their systems to depress their heart rate and poof! All HER babies gone!! Imagine the pain of losing the birds and finding out it was something you did that hurt them even if it was unintentional. Same lady was wearing a beaded necklace and it broke...(the birb bit it) and she had to rush her birb to the birby ER for a very traumatic and expensive "crop vacating". Thankfully the bead was only in the crop and the vet made him barf it up to get the tiny little bead that he stole after her bit her necklace she was wearing! Dish liquid sitting on the sink also made my birb sick too, thankfully it was a natural soap with zero colors or toxic things, but ....she landed on the cap, got it on her feet, then cleaned herself and ingested only a miniscule amount of soap and then didn't want to eat! She was sick from that tiny little lick of soap off her foot. THINK AHEAD!! birb proof every inch of the home and don't cook with Teflon!! Have good ventilation!!! Moral to this long story is BIRB PROOF YOUR HOUSE AND YOURSELF BEFORE A DISASTER HAPPENS >>>You can't wear clothes/purses items with beads/stones sewn onto them. You can't have curtains with starchy chemicals to make them stiff, you cant put popourie junk out on the table that's all soaked in chemicals and colored sometimes too...it's essentially all very bad for a bird. They use pine cones and sticks, dried and died flowers, etc in those potpourri balls too!! NOOOOOO!! Even the windows and mirrors need to be taped or covered before you let the birb out so they don't fly into them!! free flying indoors means you go through your entire house... every single item and think seriously about every single item in the home before letting the preciouses fly!!!!!

hi parronts. i got my first bird in april so this is my first fall/winter with birds. how cold is "too cold" for the bird? if i keep my house at 60-65, is that ok?
@MARLENEMCCOHEN
@MARLENEMCCOHEN 7 жыл бұрын
It's more about temperature change. I'd say they can handle your house at that temperature if they have so far as long as it doesn't change within 10 degrees suddenly. So if they are used to 75 degrees and suddenly there is a draft of cold air from outside, that can give them a chill. I have heard of a lot of people keeping their house at your temperature with birds. Mine seem to like 72-78. lower than that I hear sneezing, but thats also because in general I always keep it warm so if it got lower its due to a sudden change.

OMG “Supervided” on the chapter card just cracked me up!!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Thank you for all the videos. I have had a bird hankering for many months now. And I am trying to scratch the itch with educational videos such as yours. Our last bird (several years ago) we did not plan on. She landed in our tree. So since we had many cats, she was designated to live in my daughter’s bedroom. After we had her for months, we had a couple cats who would wander in and just chill, no hunting (cat chattering nor stalking) behavior etc. But this was pure luck. We still have those cats, but also dogs and other cats. Can you do a video or three on having multiple species households? I think any advice for other prospective bird parents hoping to add another species, or to introduce a bird to their resident dogs &/or cats could be a great series. Obviously some people say one should only have one (warm blooded) species as a pet at a time. But knowledge is key if one wants, or ends up with, multiple species households.

I have 2 budgies one is tamed and the other one, well I'm working on it. I can't really take the tamed budgie outside the cage when the other one is in the same room, otherwise, he just sits on the cage. But when I do take him out, he sometimes suddenly flies away on top of the curtain (his wings are not clipped). Also, I couldn't find any harness that was small enough for him, so I don't really know how I could take him outside, but it is something I am looking forward to, as I want him to make him enjoy the fresh air.

Hey no joke on using dogs! I live in the country and have two livestock guardian dogs to watch over my cats during the day and me at night (if I'm outside). Dogs are great pet protectors - I only got dogs for my cats first and me second.

So what would you suggest for an aggressive African Grey? He is super nippy and is easily scared. My grandmother owns him and he doesn't get out of his cage much because he is so anti social and territorial. He lets her touch him occasionally. I will get him eventually so what is your advise for bonding and being able to bring him out for enrichment?

I have 2 lovebirds that don’t go outside, they are very skiddish and I am working on that, but I plan on getting an indian ringneck. Outside I have 2 cats, around 35 chickens, and a large dog. I am planning to harness train my indian ringneck when I get it, but my dog can be rough if he gets excited, and chases the chickens around sometimes. The cats are actually scared of the chickens and don’t go near them, but they aren’t wild cats, they are tame and still come home. My dog is my only worry and could seriously hurt the bird, what could I do to help?

So, is it safe to take your birds for walks with you if they are wearing a harness? And if they are a smaller bird, such as a conure? Ive been wanting a green cheek conure so I'm doing research on them o make sure mine has a happy life :)

Hi Marlene! So i really want you to answer bc that is a really important question for me. So I recently got two cockatiels, a male and a female, and they are kind of scared. I always talk to them but it kind of doesn’t help. The female,Lily, steps up only if I give her food, but that’s it, and the male,Coco, is scared of me,I mean he takes food from me but he won’t step up or interact with me because he is scared. I tried to take him out of the cage and he flew all over the room but I put him back because I was worried he would hit his head or something. I took Lily out of the cage and she sat on my hand eating. So now the question is how do I get them out without being scared and hurting themselves. I don’t wanna clip their wings because I want them to fly and be happy. The cage is really big and they fly around but I want to free them without them hurting themselves. This is the first time I have parrots and I really need your help. If you have the same problem like my comment so Marlene can see it. By the way I’m sorry for my English...some words might me wrong but I hope you understand.💖

I think its safe if they dont come in contact with your birds. Yeah my birds always start screaming at them and start dancing all of the place. But the birds never get close enough to touch or get close to their cages or anything. They always stay by my fruit trees.
