The rifle arrived today and I dialed in the scope just a couple hours ago kzbin.infoUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL . I haven’t shot with a scope in probably 25 years. The X on the left was my target. (the shot almost in the bullseye on the right X was my father in laws first shot after I made adjustments) The two shots circled are my first 2 shots. Then I brought it down - shot once. Then brought it over to the left. From there zeroed it in to dead center. This all was from 25 yards out. Follow instructions carefully when mounting the scope. So far I'm very happy with the purchase.

Those used to Model 94 style levers often remark on how much larger and heavier the 336 is. But it has a lot more features and a more modern action and more metal in it. I do like the modern features on finishes on these style of levers. Makes them appeal to a whole new audience and does add some practical features. Seen plenty of pigs bowled over with Marlins and all sorts of levers over the years. I love my Ruger 96/44 over the lot!
@fredsmith93473 жыл бұрын
Those are cool rifles. They are not precision rifles and are plenty accurate for their intended purposes/range. The ones in the states have a threaded muzzle and big loop, so some extra goodies there. Lever actions aren’t for everyone but everyone should try one - they are a lot of fun.

An older shooter I be and I have the Marlin Dark in .45-70 with the Mid West hand guard and assorted pic rails and accessories for just about any situation night or day but by far the best addition was an Aimpoint H34L. Much better than the smaller aperture red dots. Load up the Hornady or Nosler ballistic tip 300/325 gr and it’s devastating on pigs especially in the short open scrub.

I’ve got a 1974 336 in 30-30. Beautiful rifle. I’ve got the Ranger Point Precision loading gate in ‘gold’, to match the trigger (I think it was an upgrade), and have bought a second stock set, so as to not damage the originals in the field. The rifle was bought new by the previous owner, who tapped the receiver and mounted a crappy air rifle/rimfire rated red dot. He damaged the original sight dovetails ( probably drifted them out the wrong way), so I’ve modified a length of pic rail to match the existing wonky holes, and run a Sig Romeo 7 red dot. I think he bought the rifle, couldn’t keep it on target, and just shoved it to the back of the safe, until he died, as the action was still super tight. My Lockdown program was to take the internals apart, dremel polish everything, and sit running the action repeatedly while watching TV for several hours over a few weeks, with a d without snap caps. I now have a gorgeous rifle, that shoots ~2MOA with Hornady Leverlution 180g ballistic tips for significantly less than I paid for each of my 22LR plinkers. Very happy boy.

Hornady red tip is as good as it gets for lever gun ammo. Bench rest out to 100 yards in .45-70 is MOA and if you up a pig centre mass it will go straight through and fuck up everything in-between. I dropped a 60 odd kg sow at 20 yards running away from me at St George over Easter and she went end over end legs in the air and that shot was through scrub so yeah the ballistic tip stuff is good shit. Check out the Nosler 300 gr orange tip demons if reloading. Lighter and faster. The 250 gr Hornady pills are scarce and way too expensive.

That Marlin needs a "big loop" in black on it. I installed a big loop on my 336SS (stainless steel) and it transformed my shooting. BTW, you gotta break that action in. Once it's worn in, she cycles like butter.

Liked your review and while this isn’t my cup of tea I thought 1.5 MOA from many bolt action hunting rifles to be acceptable. From a carbine it is exceptional. Could it be that a cold barrel was the reason for the spread with the Winchester ammo?
@larrysayers13773 жыл бұрын
Nice review with the limited ammo you had. Good choice to use a scope for accuracy. I have done the same in the past. It will be interesting to see what Ruger has in store for the 336. I've had a number of Marlins in various calibers and all seem to need a break in period on the action. My current Marlin is an XLR 30-30 stainless with a 2.5x Leupold on it (I cerakoted it to matte black) and I have tried numerous types of ammo in 150gr/170gr bullets and it only likes 170gr. In fact it likes Fed Prem 170gr Noslers the best. It will not shoot Hornady LEVERevolution ammo at all yet my 24" barrel 1972 Win with 3/4 mag using a Williams Peep will put them all in a 2.5" circle all day. However, I am convinced that an aftermarket trigger with 3lb pull will make some difference in groups.

I love lever guns and one is high on my wish list, but I just purchased a carbine as I find it a pain to lug a heavy rifle through alpine areas and heavy forest when hunting deer, etc. I think I know the answer to this already, but I'm guessing it's going to be quite bulk and heavy in this configuration? It's a handy design for sure, but I just can't help but wonder if it's keeping true to the idea of a compact lightweight repeater. An interesting review as always Oz.

Unless they have improved the trigger substantially, you will get better groups as you get used to the trigger. My first groups with my 1973 336 were way worse than yours here. Now, 1.5" is no problem. It does better with Remingtons than Winchester or Federal, but they are all acceptable. As for the look, I love wood and blue, but there is nothing wrong with today's finishes and materials. If it is reliable and makes holes where you want them, its good.
