#6 Winter has arrived

Snow has come early. After 3 weeks off I've returned to the cabin to prepare for winter. I've made a start with the window frames and I'm digging out the lower floor of the small cabin.

When I clicked on the first video of this series, I could not believe it. I live very close to this place, about 10 km from Torre Pellice (that is the town at the base of the mountain). I am very often in that valley, mostly riding my road bike and mountain bike. Now I know that, if I ever see a black Suzuki Jimny with NL plate, it's you. I really love how people coming from other countries appreciate what I have taken for granted my whole life, such as being able to see beautiful mountains every single day. As a person that has lived his entire life in this area (I can see exactly the same mountains that you can see), it is great to read so many positive comments about the nature and the landscape, it really proves that my region has a huge potential for creating some "responsible tourism". BTW, winter has not been that cold and snowy, so I assume that it was possible to go on with the project. The last snowfall was on December 8 (as shown at minute 11:30), then the weather has been warm, especially in the mountains...and it seems like we will get 3 days of snow aroud Christmas, but it will snow only above 1500m, rain under 1500m....climate change is so fucking real in the Alps.

i suggest a green house in between the two houses. i once stayed in New Zealand in a place that had 3 school busses converted into living spaces and that were connected by a huge green house that was a living room. It was just amazing to have so much light and the view.. it would be a great contrast between your darker interior. Enjoying your channel! keep up the great work

You can enclose them in a huge geodesic dome, which would warm up the structures and be very sturdy.

Sorry a greenhouse between the two houses wouldn't make much difference. The houses are not in a condition to keep him warm in the winter. I then would suggest to build a greenhouse over the two houses, untill he has insulated well the houses, like windows, the door and a ceiling below the roof. The flat stones are not well insulators and you could see the holes between the roof beams and a lot of cold air it's coming in from there and they should be closed up. So he has to build a ceiling in which needs insulation sandwiched between roof and the ceiling. I know I sound like pulling your legs and I really😊 do, because there are no options for him right now.

Great series. Very envious. I’ve done many renovations for myself and clients (I’m a retired architect) but couldn’t do it now. By the way, the vapour barrier goes on the warm side of the roof in a cold climate! You can add a waterproof breathable layer under the roof covering. Good luck.

Thank you for sharing your art with us. It's inspiring. I've retired from building and usually entertain myself with sailing-life vlogs but your style and composition are exceptional and greatly appreciated. Tip: plaster the wall thickness inside the window with bright white plaster. The angle through the wall thickness will provide more reflected light than any enlargement of the opening. I find that some of the oldest methods in building are sometime still the best.

I hesitated leaving a comment because I know they were just thousands and thousands and you cannot possibly get to the mall but maybe somewhere somehow someone will read what I'm about to tell you. First off wonderful job incredible work and undertaking especially being self taught I am impressed and I am learning still as I watch these videos with excitement and enthusiasmTo continue on in my own endeavors and projects I am 67 years old very long story short no pun intended I am a cyclist as well not a touring cyclist and not so much anymore cycling served its purpose for me training for centuries helped a very stressful job I am now retired and cancer survivor. One of the greatest values I have received watching your videos is the rejuvenation of the desire to carry on with my own projects although most are now done on my house I started building things 10 years ago because it was so costly to have somebody pay to do these things I started watching KZbin videos and taught myself I built a fence on my corner lot I built two shade structures for my side yard to help block the sun in the afternoon the side gate that enters into the side yard and a few other projects as well I burned myself out completely I got to the point where I just had no love for what I was doing anymore because I just did one project after the other and I knew I was on a 10 year timeline before I got too old but I am sad to walk away from that because it was such a rewarding time of my life as well your videos have helped me so much and rekindled the joy and enthusiasm and desire to start not with heavy projects but with smaller ones with the same passion I started with in the beginningI wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart so much you are a good man keep going keep doing follow the joy you will find yourself there God bless you

Hey Martijn, just seen how you're planning to do the roof; make sure you put the vapour barrier on the warm side of the insulation (i think you suggested to put it on the cold side) - you want to stop the vapour from getting through to a cold surface onto which it will condense into water and rott the materials - have a look at steve roofer on here, he will talk you through a flat roof construction but the principles are the same.

Question: Since the roof is a very big future project, wouldn't it be helpful to cover it from the outside with a large plastic until you start working on it? I love the channel also, but I’m worried about your vapor barrier as well. Also, check the permeability of The vapor barrier. Some of them are so impermeable that they create their own set of problems. All buildings need to breathe, at least a little.

Love the videos, but had the same thought about the vapor barrier! If you plan to live in there in the winter, its indeed really important to have the barrier on the warm side and maybe even to make sure that the cold side of the insulation is well ventilated. Looking forward to more!

yeah agree on the vapor barrier. You could use something as simple as like polyethylene.

You might be thinking of wind barrier instead of vapour barrier. Those have different capabilities. The wind barrier is not vapour tight, so that the insulation can dry out.Tyvek or Bison are two products in our domestic market. The vapour barrier is installed on the warm side to prevent moisture entering the insulation. Normal plastic sheet can be used for this. The snow create it's own set of challenges. It gets heavy, and when it thaws, water can get in where rain water doesn't. That's why natural stone roofs need a waterproof under roof.

I just love watching your progress! If I were male and a few decades younger, this is exactly what I would want to be doing, but I see you hauling those huge rocks and know it is not a job I could do. At your age, I was leading a traditional life with a corporate job, but I have always bought older houses and worked on fixing them up including the one I'm in now which was a rental and I am nearly 70 years old. I look forward to seeing what comes next, though I imagine we may have to wait until Spring thaw. Thank you so much for sharing. I love that you stop every now and then to look up and see what an amazing place you bought and show us the beauty of the seasons in addition to the work. The old leaves and dirt/debris taken from the cabins could be piled up to begin a compost process. Add some nitrogen from cooking scraps and come spring you might have some compost for a garden. My son used rock-wool insulation, and found it superior to fiberglass insulation. You could even tear it apart and stuff in all the openings in walls and roof until you rebuild the roof structure.

Why not composting toilets? Gray water can be "treated" by appropriate plants and used in the garden. That way you'll be completely independent and circular in your waste management.

Hi Martijn, we had the same problem with the tiny window frames in our finca here in Ibiza, thick walls and tiny openings. In order to keep all the light coming in we built a big frame around the biggest opening in the wall, instead of building a small one in the middle of the wall. like a picture frame framing a window. Hope thats understandable. It looks beautiful, we painted it white as the walls, a perfect fit with „loads“ of light coming in ;) Maybe that an idea for you too. Love your mountain paradise and the amazing work and love you are putting into it.

Goedendag Martijn. An interim roof solution could be to plug the gaps with moss, which should assist in keeping out the weather and retaining some heat. There should be quite a bit around you, Johannes would probably know where it can be found. The soil you are removing from the future bathroom, sifted, could probably make a good composting material. I should imagine it has accumulated over decades of animals being kept in there. I like Karlisberg's idea of tying in both units with a transitional space, like a greenhouse but maintaining the individuality and independence of both structures. Sterkte

Hi loving the series so far. As an engineer I am always looking to solve problems. Just a thought but if you use a board and insulation product and create an inner room within your main house you can keep warm through the night as it would be supper insulated. By warming stones on the stove during the day and placing them in the room at night where the heat can be released slowly. As I say just a thought, will watch your progress and wish you well. Hey Martjin, I enjoy watching your videos and I know, many people probably giving many advice but here is mine anyway: Don't use the OSB cause because of the glue in it, the osb is less vapor permeable than the roof boards and the actual vapor barrier. The rule is, from inside to outside getting more vapor permable. otherwise, you are getting problems with your due point and the insulation will get moist problems, If you have questions, let me know. I used rigid insulation board 25mm in between my joist and I had to leave a 50mm gap from the roof membrane to the insulation board and then I cladded it with T&G board it came out looking good as I still kept the lovely oak wood exposed on the main A frames that are in the room. I am sure it will look wonderful but it needs to be done right if not it can cause damp, no cold spots I was advised on all my dry walling too. I wish him good luck.

Ehhh… depends. The osb construction used in Germany works for Germany because of the temperatures. The problem is that in Southern Europe that cannot work. The vapor moves from hot to cold due to the dew point. As Germany does not get that warm the problem is in the winter due to warm to cold. HOWEVER, in Southern Europe the summers are quite hot as well. So you have the inverse problem. Meaning you have to use an OSB sandwich with insulation in between. OR you just use 200mm solid XPS/EPS. With his stone roof (and I am guessing requirement) he will have that heat problem. Think of it as follows. You want 20C as room temperature. In the winter you have 0 meaning warm inside cold outside. In the summer you can get 40C with roof at least, meaning warm outside, cold inside. If you use the German construction your internal wall will be soaked with humidity. BTW I write this as I am Swiss/German, and live in Medoc which gets very hot in the summer.

They made it sound like only the immigrant relatives - back to grandparents- had to have originally been Italian citizens. Don't remember that their children had to have been born in Italy. I am currently researching Danish citizenship. My father, who never gained American citizenship due to nationality quotas, told me that I had Danish citizenship, even if he had been naturalized. Denmark supposedly recognized duel citizenship. Maybe your mother can apply, gain citizenship and then you can apply through her.

Regarding roof layers. There should be a vapor barrier between layer 2 and 3. otherwise you will get a wet insulation. I love your project in this great region of italy. ✌️

Might want to think about setting your window frames in canned spray foam since it is too cold to grout. Build them on the bench, set in place, foam them in. Pounding on loose stone is a prescription for disaster.

Suggestion: What if you put the tarp ON the roof, instead of the floor under it? This way, it would protect the roof's frame too.

The stone roof is artwork. A tarp on it would be effective but ugly. The tarp should go getween stoneroof and woodbeams, which will be very hard to do.

Tarp can only hold for so long especially exposed in harsh elements up there in the mountains. In a short time, wind, rain/snow and sun will eventually shred up the tarp.

instead of building a bathroom with a septic tank, have you considered a compost toilet and reusing grey water from the bathroom on the garden? This would save a lot of work installing a septic tank and a more efficient system, if water supply is limited. I also thought that you could use waste water to fill a small pressurised system to generate electricity with a micro hydro generator - this way waste water from a shower, bath or kitchen could be used to generate power for your home.

Vapor barrier should be from interior side of the insulation, to protect it from vapor transmiting from inside to outside in the winter. In the place were you have drawn vapor barrier should be roof membrane, which is closed for water, but open for vapor. Also do not use OSB in that place, because it is closed for vapor.

Yes! Good input! I suggest using a woodfiber plate (Gutex 22mm) above the insulation. This gives extra protection for water + insulates too!

Hello Martjin, nice work with the house and the channel, also, I enjoy watching it a lot. About five years ago I also bought and old stone farmhouse in a neighbouring Slovenia (where I come from). It is livable and has been renovated somehow in the 80'ies (uncomparable to your project) but a lot of work to be done, still... Anyhow, about the roof.. When uncovering the old roof, think first of a concrete ring on top of the stone walls. It will connect as well as structurally reinforce stone walls beneath it. It will also level the walls for the new roof.

Don't do sceptic tank- do a 'jardin d'assainissement'. This is what we are doing at our little mill. It is still a flushing toilet~ but even better! It has won awards in EU and France (even more strict than eu). Well worth investigating ~

Hi I'm from Italy and I love what you are doing!! I'm thinking that maybe the beam isn't rotten but it is simply soaked in water. Maybe if you cover the leaking poin with a plastic sheet (under the stones on the roof) and allow the beam to dry you don't have to repleace it. I am so motivated seeing what you're doing with your place. I bought 20 acres in the PNW Washington area. Working with a local saw mill now to mill trees from our land to build outbuildings with. We too have many codes we have to follow, no need to push against it just go with the flow as they say. Beautiful blend between, work, scenery and the timeless patina of your homestead.

BTW glad you reused that old door, it will make a really cool shelf later if you hand plane. I like to look at things and say " if that could speak, the stories it could tell". The Netherlands felt that way the whole time I was there, tons of history in everything. I took tons of pictures of door through my travels. Take care.

Dag Martijn. Great to see you forwarding. Watch out with your roof insulation design. To avoid moisture and mould in the insulation layer you should apply the vapor barrier on the inside. On the outside you can put a vapor permeable foil and/or a raw wooden layer (not osb) to protect from rain leakages. It is not mandatory to use a vapor barrier at all, but it helps to heat up the space quickly with convection heat. Succes

I think watching what you are doing is relaxing , because of knowing WHERE you are . If you were working on a house in the city I would not have subscribed or watched more than a few minutes . We did a huge renovation on our house 20 years ago , and did all the work ourselves , even a new trussed roof , since it was a flat roof restaurant originally in 1955 . I am older now and would never do it again but I love seeing what you are doing . I do know I would have to have more windows if I was going to live there , but I know the cost is really high to make changes , IF they decide to allow them .

What benefits are there to insulation in the roof?

@@stanB950 You reduce the transfer of heat from the rooms below during cold periods. You also protect the rooms from excess heat during hot periods. If you don't have space to insulate the ceilings from within the room or the ability to insulate the ceilings, you may be able to insulate that room from above the ceiling. If you have a usable loft, you may want to store items in it or use it for yourself; in this instance, insulating the ceiling and the roof makes sense. You can also reduce the risk of freezing tanks and pipes when less heat leaks into the loft from rooms below that are better insulated. There can be complications, for example in case of damp (solution: better ventilation), but overall insulating a roof is perhaps the easiest, fastest and best return on investment of all energy-saving home improvements (but, you need access to the loft).

Regarding the low standing height in the bathroom at groundfloor Why not dig a walking path , where you need to walk and place the toilet in a special digged space just enough for the toilet and the same with the zink just in a height which works for you The shower area could be digged with sloping walls being weider as it get higher. You don't need the same kind of space to your feet as you need up higher In this way you keep as much dirt around your walls but you can still get standing height and it will look really cool
