I was not even remotely interested in a Martin at the time the salesman put a 1995 Martin J40 in my hands but from the first strum, I knew there was magic of epic proportions. It is like the Steinway full grand version of a guitar. I Haven't been able to put it down since. If single strings are plucked lightly it has overtones like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. In fact, unless I deaden the other strings while tuning, the overtones will confuse the sound hole tuner, not to mention they make the Low E near impossible to tune. Even with all the other strings deadened, the Low E will create it's own overtone so you need to tune fast. My J40 is standard braced and came with Martin branded Gotoh 1:14 sealed tuners (which Martin's factory tech denied the Martin factory ever installed). I upgraded to 1:21 which makes it so much easier to sneak up on the note without sliding right past it and having to try again. Owning a guitar like this takes all of the fun out of trying guitars out in music stores because the search is over. You have found "The One." No point in going there other than to BS with other players and buy strings. So excited about the guitar I forgot to mention, phenomenal rendition, great playing.

Agree 100% mate! Today I bought a JC-40 (C for cutway) the guitar is 31 years old and I wasn’t going to buy any guitar as I was just killing time at this guitar shop waiting for my wife who was shopping next door… saw this Martin JC-40 and as soon I played the first note I was hooked. Bought it!

@@HI2LIFE Congratulations on the new baby. I love playing above the 14th fret so that cutaway has had my attention for a while. So far I haven't seen a cutaway around here to test out. In fact, I haven't seen a single J40 of any kind around here at all since I purchased mine several years ago.

Been playing a 1965 00-18 (awesome sound) finally decided to get a new guitar and came home with a 2021 reimagined J40. Love the sound and easy on the eyes also. However the first couple times playing at home was immediately hit with (whoa this thing is huge) actually called the shop to see if I could return it but I had a K&K installed so that took care of the return. I just didn’t feel comfortable. Knowing that I was (stuck) lol with a J40 decided I should invest more time in acclimating to the bigger size. 3-4 days passed and I found myself with a huge smile on my face. I choose the J for its robust sound and now was used to it. I can’t put it down now. I’m glad I choose it over a d28, hd28 and the close second a d28 custom deluxe.

Your playing is fantastic. Only 4 videos. It's a crime that your talent isn't recognised. What's the name of the tune. Sounds familiar. How about a little tutorial. Bet you can do a good version of the Rain song by led zeplin. Might buy a j 40, if it sounds like that Best wishes Dean from 🇬🇧 🎸❤️🎸

The J-40 takes 10 minutes or so to warm up and come alive before the tones really sing. Best place to pluck is over the sound hole, 1/4" -1/2" from the end of the neck. That's where overtones sounding like a choir of angels are hiding.

At moments it sounds like a 12-string guitar. Well, not at moments, but if strummed lightly, most of the time.

I have listened to a bunch of Tommy Emmanuel "Those Who Wait," recordings, including the album version, plus I have heard him play it on stage. I haven't yet heard anything that achieves the sound quality of this video. Tommy needs a Martin J-40.

Absolutely agree... the clarity of this j40... and the playing... stunning. I've listened to this probably 20 times in the last few days trying to convince myself to take the hold of an hd28e ive been eyeing and go with the j40 instead.

@@troykelly639 That is a tough, yet enviable decision to have to make. Either one could sound great, depending on the individual guitar. The J40 is a vibrating machine. You can feel it through your chest, your heart then right up your left arm.

@patricklundquist9869 part of the issue for me is there are no j40s within 1500 kms of me (used or new - im in canada). There is a new one at a shop pretty much clear across the country and he's assured me it's a keeper, but thats such a personal thing... ive never purchased sight unseen or played. The hd28e I've played and it is stellar... problem is I have a songwriter that is really really good too. I've a/b the gibson and martin and the martin is better but not by much. I think I know the answer... :)

@@troykelly639 This is certainly a delayed response but I just reread your comment and since I have both a Gibson J45 and a Martin J40, I have an honest opinion of which one is the better guitar. The one I am playing is the best guitar. The Martin's rosewood provides lush tones, overtones and resonance, like a symphony. The Gibson's mahogany provides an amazing clarity and note separation and is no slouch in the resonance department either. Whenever I finish playing either one, I'll find myself sitting there thinking, "Wow, I can't believe I just played that." Rather than completely hijack this thread I think I should bring this back to MrAbSomeone. This is a phenomenal video.

I've been toying around with a bunch of possibilities. The bottom line is I want a little rumble and a little articulation and this guitar seems, in my experience, to deliver that delicate balance.

You and a couple of other people have made these demo videos for this guitar and I am just Smitten by it. It's worth $4,000 my only dilemma is whether to have the Fishman Electronics or the baggs system installed at the factory. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. And by the way bro you are one heck of a player I must say. And the sound is immaculately beautiful. I am a solo performer and I currently use a yairi Alvarez gy2e with outdated Alvarez mk2 600t electronics. It's a great model of guitar and has superb sound but it just cannot compare to this Martin j40. I just cannot get over how good the sound is. Are you using an acoustic guitar amp or a PA and if so what is the brand and model of amp? I don't care about the price. Thanks again.

Thank you for the appreciation. My J40 do not have any electronics installed. It was recorded by using two mics: AKG P170 (the one you can see) and a R0DE M3 located just above the video frame. As for the electronics, I had the same dilemma between the Fishmann Matrix Infinity Mic Blend and the LR Baggs Anthem (both with piezo and microphone) to be installed on a Martin OM28. Finally I opted for the Fishman mainly because it is not visible and also because someone on YT noticed that the Baggs could slightly modify the acoustic sound of the guitar. Honestly, going back, I'm not sure I would make the same choice again.

@patricklundquist9869

Maybe, but then it wouldn't sound as much like Tommy Emmanuel and this appears to be more of a demo of guitar playing than of a J40. There are several other J40 demos that feature strumming, flat picking and finger style all separated without reverb. On the other hand, this demo also features all three of those interwoven throughout. The J40 excels at all three with, or without, reverb.
@Thresholdmoment
@Thresholdmoment 2 жыл бұрын
I totally disagree, the Reverb makes it so beautiful. I am a solo performer and I use Alesis effects exclusively and Hall one setting for both vocals and guitars and every once in awhile some person like you tells me there's too much Reverb but the audience listening to it Love's it. I think what it is is you may be slightly jealous of his talent and I can say that I'm really not a guitarist I'm a singer although I am a solo performer so I am a professional guitar player who has gigs every weekend but my playing can't compare to this guy's playing. I'm a singer and probably his voice can't compare to mine. If I took the Reverb out the audience would not enjoy it as much so why should anyone listen to you?
