Man after my own heart. Someone else would be driving a four wheeler up there. I like the quiet and to use my body.

I always get a little chuckle when I see a thumbs down. What kind of person wouldn't enjoy these video. I've almost binged watched all of them.

It seems at minimum there is always one in a hundred. Could be a lot of reasons for someone taking the time to watch and then doing that.

Me too, I was looking for a video of how to put a foundation under an old log cabin and after watching it, I liked it so much that I decided to start with #1. What a treat.

Martin pulls that loaded 8 miles.. bringing supplies from the parked truck to the cabin.. he is a good man

I think this is the first time I've seen the cabin when it was not Winter. Great job with the cart.

Thanks for the idea. It may come in handy in other projects. I power 12 volt batteries with solar panels so I am ready. Note that I took the whole pedal assembly out of the bikes and shaped a heavy Oak spindle into the cavity to connect the bikes in the sturdiest part of the frames.

Martin, you are what they used to call a 'Scrounger.' It's not a bad word, it simply means that you find odds and ends to put together to make something useful. It's a skill that our grandparents, great-grandparents, and grandparents for millenia had to use.

I just love using junk for something useful.

Very Nice. Something like that would work great on these Gravel roads here in Northwest iowa, into Minnesota, absolutly awesome.

Nice work Martin! Now that's dedication crossing that big swamp! I can see why you have no problem with wet feet canoe bushwhacking through the bogs and swamps to get to those secret little back lakes in WCPP!

That's quite a cart you built and I bet it cost you nothing .I can't believe it can carry all that weight without any problems ,3 propane tanks and a cooler very impressive. I had no idea you had such a long way into your cabin,makes it difficult bringing large things in like wood for cabin repairs.Enjoyed your video as usual thanks Dale
@TheNorthwoodsman15 жыл бұрын
The cart can hold 500 pounds but for pulling in the woods 300 is as heavy as I load it. The cart was made without a single trip to the hardware store.

In my comment on the latest vlog, I said I was going to continue watching with #12, but I meant #10. This contraption is ingenious! Shows what a recycler can do with the throwaway items of others! I've thought of the bike use for bugout, but at 75, no way I am going to be doing that! Hunker down will be my M.O. - Amazing how that cart goes through the bogs, nothing slows it down as long as the ox pulling it doesn't fail! LOL! - Greetings from An Armchair Adventurer
@TheNorthwoodsman15 жыл бұрын
The four tires on the cart are so much better than one on a wheel barrow when the ground is soft.
@larryboschen12877 жыл бұрын
Doubt laugh!!!!!! That rig is awesome. I think I will build one. The larger diameter wheels will really help on getting stuck on in small holes along the trail......awesome idea!
@TheNorthwoodsman17 жыл бұрын
Larry, it works great for getting a heavy load into the cabin. I see I may have to change the name on the video. The new name for these seems to be "Bug out cart."

I knew there had to be a good use for BMX bikes! Some of the things I have seen the kids doing on them I would not have tried even when I was that age! Good idea that seems to work VERY well!
@quest4certainty8957 жыл бұрын
Haha I'm new to your channel and always admired your "cart" b/c I always wondered about utilizing 2 BMX bikes in this way. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to "simply" address the "steering" of a contraption such as yours. Now I do. Thank you so much and keep up the good work!
@TheNorthwoodsman17 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and by the way, the steering did not get figured out until the end of the project.
@rbarbour6410 жыл бұрын
great use of scrap. Like the use of bicycles. The only thing I see that is need is lighter material. use of lighter metals and replace the wood parts with lighter stuff. Videos like this gives me ideas on how I would build my carts. keep up the good work.

Great! Idea on the cart. I have been wanting to build one in the same fashion and haven't found thought of a good enough idea until now... Thanks for sharing. Just an Idea to ponder... Salvage a 18v drill/screwgun, Mount it with a sprocket in the chuck, and in line with a sprocket on the wheel. "chain drive assist", Pull out the switch from handle in the gun and extend the wires so you can operate switch from the handle of the cart. May have to buy the solar charging system. Just a thought.

Martin you got it made with that can up in the woods nothing but wilderness to bother you that must be awesome I would love to have a place like that to get away from the concrete jungle
@BacktotheBasics1015 жыл бұрын
I like how you use used parts to make things. We do the same thing. Mini ranchers love to recycle sometimes for cement sentimental reasons sometimes out of necessity, sometimes because we don’t have enough money to go to town in by the store parts.

Nice place you have there! The cabin we are building out back (well my wife is building it) can be pretty buggy for spring and early summer.

Well, if it ever hits the fan, you are the kind of guy I'd like around.
@TheNorthwoodsman111 жыл бұрын
This video was shot in early June. Normally a time I would avoid the cabin. In 2012 there were really no bothersome bugs. I know it sounds bad but they were not bothering me.

@TheNorthwoodsman16 жыл бұрын
I think if you pause the video at certain spots you can see the finer points. LOL, there were no "plans", I just started putting things together. I did measure to make sure my tubs and cooler fit snugly between the bike frames.

That silver bike was what the rick kids had when we were kids, its Diamond Back. Prob still worth quite a bit. A bike like that was easy $5-600 bucks. Pretty neat design you built, kinda like those rick shaw's I think they are called.

Interesting idea: if you made the base and sides enclosed, you could probably get it to float it across those boggy areas, then utilize the wheels on dry land.

I do admire that cart, and I've been looking for something to help me clear piece of property that has a bunch of trash left over the years the thing was left vacant. The ground is too rough to balance a wheelbarrow. This cart looks optimal for that.

Make a hat and a pair of mittens out of those beavers, but then in the winter thats probably the smoothest part of the road.
@TheNorthwoodsman17 жыл бұрын
The beavers are a mixed blessing. Nice ponds and the varied habitat that they allow but oh when the waters really back up.

WOW, awesome videos, thanks for sharing. I know it's 4 years on from this one, but how hard would it be to clear a trail for the 4-wheel drive to get in closer? Might have to zig zag some but surely something could be done for not too much cost.

good thinking , i am making a bug out cart from a jogging cart right now , Mt Rainier lahar cart

I have used that cart for many years now and have not changed anything. I may build a two wheel version for smaller trails (one axle,)
@joshuanichols19910 жыл бұрын
this is a great idea but I have to ask how come you made the bed on a angle rather then level.
@TheNorthwoodsman110 жыл бұрын
joshua nichols I wanted to keep it simple and the front of the bed had to be that high so the front tires would have room to turn. The rear is resting on the axle extensions.

I live on a lake, all my neighbors have those stupid expensive atv's and drive around the neighborhood, i made a decision to make exercise my hobby, and now i ride road bike, upwards of 100 miles on bike trails, i backpack such as the grand canyon, and during the winter i go into the local fitness center so i don't loose all my fitness level. This all began in the spring of 2007 when i began hiking up the old logging roads to the top of the mountains where i live..........All my neighbors have stomachs that hang half way down to their knees, and my stomach is nearly flat. I have radically changed my diet and what i eat, i have eliminated a lot of processed foods and junk.....I look at people confined to mobility devices and i think to myself that my choice of exercise is often difficult, i dont feel like it, but i do it anyway...... as a result i am so far away from being in a mobility chair @ the age of 60 and i think about the fact that once they sit down in one its over, there is no way they can come back from it. I think your mile walk into your cabin and what you've chosen to do with your life is about the smartest thing anyone could do.............Taking care of yourself and enjoying what you do separates you from most people.............
@TheNorthwoodsman17 жыл бұрын
John we have the same idea about how to get around the woods and be better for it. I was at the gym yesterday so I am ready for the trails coming up. I know it does not guarantee health but the best we can do to stay ready.

It's funny, I'm wearing stereo headphones and swatting at the flies, that aren't really here, lol
@TheNorthwoodsman17 жыл бұрын
The bugs come through loud and clear don't they! I do use a metal detector but it is frustrating because every tin can was just tossed out the window or door. These settlers had little anyway so all I find are cans and empty rifle cartriges.

Good work. If not a tutorial, at least a walkabout, please.
@TheNorthwoodsman17 жыл бұрын
I took out the cranks which left a large hole in the strongest part of the bike frames. A piece of oak was form fitted to fit the hole on each frame and then secured with a large screw through the frame and into the oak. A 2x8 fitted between the frames near the handlebars and secured with screws through the frame. Another cross piece near the rear axle. You need to keep the bed above the front tires so nothing hits when you turn. It is important that the rails of the pulling yoke are parallel. The cross piece on the front of the pulling yoke is loose fitted so no binding occurs when turning.

Haven't got in to our cabin since our early spring fishing trip. The black flies are just too bad here in Ontario for the next several weeks. I'm well over a mile in from the road as well. I'm getting that familiar call though and it won't be long. Have a good summer and safe trails!
