Most of this video is edited from a VHS tape from 1987. Two friends and I make an Oct. visit to the cabin and find we had a visitor at the cabin.

Jeff was my youngest brother who died nearly 20 years ago with lymphoma Cancer. As you can see from the video he had a great sense of humor. This video brought back great memories. Thank you for putting this on KZbin. Gary Brown. His best friend Gary Hawkinson was a good friend of our family and they are both missed.

Glad you found the video Gary. The three of us worked in the auto factory together but had many other common interests from hunting to tubing behind Jeff's big boat.

@@TheNorthwoodsman1 Sorry you lost your long time friends.. Always remember the good times. Put boards with nails in front of door and windows, that will bite and maybe they won't come back...stronger window coverings too. There is lots of Elk, Deer, Black Bears in my area....

Martin you honor your long passed friends by sharing with us. You have continued to excel at keeping your strength and repairing the cabin that hosted so many memories. You seem to be the last man standing - a bittersweet time in life. If you have any of your original pack of cabin friends still living, perhaps they no longer wish to or are able to brave the wilderness, as you still have the strength and grit to do. You still amaze me what you accomplish. May your future days at the cabin be blessed ones.

Martin, I hope you turn all your old tape into digital. You should preserve the memories for all to see. Just think what we could have preserved if such items existed back in the 17, 18, & 19th centuries. I watched this video and tried to remember where I was during that time. I think back on my friends that have gone. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing, you have a huge heart with a few pieces missing but huge all the same.

What a blast that was ! The look on your face was good too, when the fellas informed you of the bear's visit as you wheeled in on your bike. Wow. Thirty years ago this fall. It really is a shame that both the fellows have passed on, especially since they were young. Friendship is a wonderful thing, and we often take it for granted. How lucky indeed, that you have that footage to take you back to the memories that were created. Life is great, even with its' ups and downs. It was amazing to "meet" your friends through the magic of videotape that was preserved and converted to digital. Thanks for sharing those precious moments with your viewers. May you long have your memories, and may your days give you the opportunity to make many more.

What a great vid to have Martin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those guys looked like the " BEST " friends a guy could have !! Great memories for sure . I know all about bears , 7 years ago , I fought off 2 big bears for hours as they tore the side out of my cabin and all I had was a fire poker to fight back , as I was inside . I think I lost 10 years off my life , that night , and never go back now without 2 fire-arms . Thanks for sharing !! Cyril , Ontario Canada.

Great video, Martin. My question, only a matter of curiosity, is that 30 years ago, did you rent or own a local farm in the area, and is that how you were attracted to this cabin? In another video, made a year or two ago, you drove home, and your wife brought you a cuppa coffee, and it was many hours drive south where you now live. Did you and your wife and family live up in this area 30 years ago, as I think in this 1987 tape, or in the video, you mention that you only had to come just a few miles to the cabin, as you lived locally at that time? Once again, just idol curiosity, and I guess we have all aged a bit in the past 30 years. :)
@TheNorthwoodsman1

All the bits of info over the years cause some confusion. The timeline is that we purchased an old farmhouse in 1978 as a vacation spot. Out exploring in 1984 I came across the old cabin. In 2002 we sold the old farmhouse because I favored the cabin and we were not using the house as much as we once did. I have no family ties to the MN area.

Our family lives full time in black bear country. Nothing is safe here if they want to get in. They will break into cars & trucks if they smell a hint of food. Sure can destroy the inside of a car! We installed "Bear Proof" bars on our windows and doors. So far, so good. Thanks for the great video!

Fortunately we had have little trouble lately. I keep the food sealed up, avoid bacon and splash a little pinesol on things when I leave. Plywood in the windows has protected them. I think this one came back and saw the ;lywood and tore out a corner to get in but found no food and never came back. The same huge tracks made me think it was the same one.

Hey Nick, so great to hear from you. This video was supposed to be all about a bear breaking in but but by the time it was done it turned into a great tribute for your dad and Hawk. Had a lot of great times with your dad.

Martín ,my wife and I have wàtched every video, and love them all, but I'll bet I've watched this one beginning to end a dozen times since you first posted it. I draw parallels to my life, and friends lost. You just have to keep moving ahead, be thankful for each day, give the wife a smooch. It's all good...

Marty it's so good of you to share this. Soon as I heard the name Hawk, I realized he was the buddy you talked about at Hawk's Pond. That bear seemed like he was rabid, biting through non food metal or he was super hungry. You can never be too careful in the wilderness. Here's to many more years without bears at the cabin !

Each campfire light's a new The flame of friendships true The Joy I've had in knowing you Will last my whole life through. And as the embers die away We wish that we might ever-stay But since we can not have out way We'll come again some other day. That's a Girl Scout song we sang around the campfire when I was growing up. Your video brought me to tears, especially since I'm about your age and have recently lost many life long friends, some with whom I've camped in our younger years. What a beautiful, touching video. I laughed along with you all, marveled at how handsome we were back then, sad for friends who passed much too soon. I wish I could go there to your magical cabin in the woods and make new memories. Thank you for letting us into these memories.

As you say, within 10 years of that bear episode, both those friends would be gone. But that old VHS held the memories of the time, and now, on KZbin, those memories will be around forever, for all of us to enjoy.
