If you’re still scratching your head over whether the Old Steve Rogers that Sam encounters at the end of Avengers: Endgame is from an alternate timeline or not then thankfully both directors from the film stepped forward and gave a definitive answer in an interview with Fox 5 DC.
Throughout this, I’ll be breaking down the original confusion and discussing how Steve came to be at the end of the movie.
This is full spoilers ahead so if you’re someone who was snapped out of existence at the end of Infinity War and haven’t had a chance to watch Endgame yet then I highly recommend that you turn off now.
With that out the way, I just wanna give a huge thank you for clicking this video, I hope you enjoy it, now sit back, relax and let’s get into the full breakdown of the theory.
Old Steve Rogers Theory
Avengers: Endgame ends with Steve Rogers traveling back in time to return the infinity stones and Moljnir to their rightful places but rather than returning to the present, Steve goes back to live out the life that he should’ve had with Peggy Carter.
After going through time the old fashioned way, Steve finally sits on the bench, seemingly moments after he traveled back so that he can present his Shield to Sam and announce that he is the new Captain America.
Most of the main confusion came over whether this was actually the original Steve Rogers or if it was one from another reality. Going by the rules of the film, Cap should’ve gone back in time and created a new, alternative reality, however, the writers of the movie came forward and said that Steve was actually Peggy’s husband the entire time.
From this we can take that Captain America did, in fact, create a branched reality and at some point, he traveled back to prime reality in order to return the Shield using a Pym Particle. So, the Cap that we see at the end is from the original timeline and the one that we have followed since the past decade or so, however, the timeline that he lived in is not the same that we have been watching and Peggy did indeed have a different husband to Steve Rogers in the main reality.
It’s sort of a bittersweet explanation as I’m kind of the mindset that Peggy and Steve were always together which is why we never really heard much about her husband, however it does also mean that he never kissed his Neice which yeah….I’m glad that’s not the case either.

When Cap travels back to the past - that past becomes his new future - period. It does not matter what he does or does not do. He has already lived thru his main time line past. It already happened. So anything that happens from this point, takes place in a new future, in a branched reality that he created when he goes back in time. There is no exception to this, and no way around it.

It’s Kevin Feige who hired physicists to help with the film’s time travel constructs. The dialogue from Professor Hulk and Iron Man is basically quoting the physicists. It’s the writers who began with Back to the Future as their working model for time travel - because that was considered an acceptable method. It’s the physicists who debunked that model as nonsensical. The writers accepted the physicists suggestion for a new model of time travel more consistent with some kind of internal logic. However they also had an agenda from Winter Soldier to get Cap and Peggy together. However the only way to do this, and be consistent with the film’s time travel model is via an alternate timeline. As Dr. Strange put it: “This is the End Game now, and there was no other way”. 😊

Steve went back in time to return the stones, but instead of going back he spent his life with peggy and grows old in that alternate timeline until he reaches the events of endgame (again) in that timeline because that's the moment where avengers figured out time-traveling He used stark's time-traveling suit to begin time-traveling, but he didn't use it again to go back because he used the one from alternate timeline instead... and remember during the time heist? you can spawn anywhere you want, hulk can spawn right at the new york sanctum... but to return, you need to be at machine... This is why the old cap didn't return at that time-machine in the original timeline, he used the alternate timeline's time machine and chose to spawn himself at the bench. So... 1. Steve time-travels to return the stones 2. He returned all the stones 3. He decided to go back with peggy instead of going back to original timeline 4. Grows old in the alternate timeline for like... decades. His time-traveling gadget ages with time and no longer functional, now he's stuck in the alternate timeline 5. Peggy died due to age in 2016, the now old steve rogers joins the funeral and can see his own younger self. 6. After being in the alternate timeline for like... really long, it's finally 2024. He enters the avengers facility knowing that he can finally return to his original timeline... like "hey, i've saved up a lot of pym particles for you guys... but do me a favor, get me back to my timeline", then banner asks "where do you want to go and when?", old man steve replies "2024 but hours ahead, at the bench near by our own time-machine" 7. The old man steve has finally returned to the original timeline. Well... there are no plot holes about time-travelling here, fascinating.

Cap wasn't to know, and yes Cap is my fave superhero so having him (unknowingly) commit incest, wrong as it is, could be put down to an old expression, 'shit happens' because as a fan of the classic issues (mostly 60s, 70s and 80s plus a fair bit of 30s-40s and a small dash of 50s) of the original comics (not just Cap, but many other wonderful gems from the old days) I've read a lot of wearder stuff than pretty much anything that the movies throw out at us, than just a mere little incest, which was purely accidental. That said I do still enjoy the movies in fact I think that it would be a good idea for the MCU to do some movies with Cap and Peggy together as a husband and wife teem who fight crime and corruption in the decades between the era of Caps return to his own time and that fateful day when he hands over his Shield to Sam. They would have to keep everything under wraps in order to make sure that history isn't changed, heck Peggy could even become the MCU's version of Caps second Golden Age Partner the Golden Girl (who was supposed to be a post war version of Peggy anyway, albeit under her long forgotten original name of Betty/Betsy Ross, I kid you not) maybe they could run into retired Golden Age heroes and villains (like I was hoping that the 'Agent Carter' series would go into) plus a few that were in Silver and Bronze Age titles, but who are yet to turn up in films and on TV under the MCU banner (including Millie the Model and as a nod to more modern fans the Sentry) plus the various events that took place in history such as the Moon landings and the like could be tackled as Steve and Peggy grow old and kick ass together. Naturally the issue of Steve being a man out of time would have to be approached a little differently that it has been done in the various comics over the years because Steve has already seen the 21st Century he would in fact be aware of events happening before the happened, if you get what I mean, thus in order to make sure that history isn't changed he would need to hold back, Steve, being Steve, and not the Doctor (another of my favourite characters) I'd say would often fall into the temptation of helping or saving someone regardless of the effect on the timeline. And yes, who doesn't want to see younger versions of Nick Fury (in all his jive talking bad ass glory, hey he would have grown up during the 70s thus he would have been subject to the kind of stereotypes that existed in those days thus he would have seen them as role models, to heck with what SJWs would say) and Phli Colson (in all his nerdy glory, and lets face it any kid who is a fan of a long dead superhero from the 1940s is bound to have been one, it would even be nice for the actor playing little Phil to pay homage to the way Peter Parker looked and acted in the 1960s issues of Spider-Man, only without the Spider Powers) among others. This is just an idea that I have and something like it, even if it lacks all the fan boy nods and winks that I'd love to see in such a project, I'd pay good money to watch such a film/TV series (a TV show would convey some of my concepts better) but if anyone has any comments feel free to make them.

But I wish they could write down or simply give us some information about the important differences between the original timeline and this new timeline created by Cap. They may also have had that branch reality come into existence solely to add the possibility of us one day seeing "Sharon Rogers" (where Sharon is Steve & Peggy's daughter rather than Peggy's niece and present-day wife to Steve), as she herself does take up her father's mantle of Captain America (and she also does not use his Vibranium Shield, she uses an energy lance and her own shield, so Steve passing his shield on to Sam actually would not impact the Sharon Rogers Captain America at all).

Personally I had waited for this movie just like everyone else. While everyone talks about Iron Man and Widow death, My internal happiness was that Steve got his happy ending. The movie was a whirlwind of emotions and to me Scott Lang elevated this movie by his wit and presence in this movie. Endgame was the movie that I wished for it be. I'm a comic fan but while others nitpick over little things; I enjoyed every single second of it. Honestly I wished it was longer. Seeing old faces and hearing callbacks was just fantastic. Seeing Stan one last time was just bittersweet. All in all...Endgame was overwhelming tremendous.

That was the whole point of this video. He jumped back to this reality to give the shield back to Sam. The jump just happened off screen. People only saw him sitting on the bench as if he waited for that moment his whole life. That led people to assume that he lived his life with peggy in the main reality which was confirmed in this video to not be the case.

Same things don't happen in 2 timelines, like Thanos snap, it happened only in the original timeline. Also in the original timeline Peggy had a husband that wasn't Steve. This is either a plothole or Steve somehow used the device to come back. I just wonder if he unfroze his other self in the other timeline. P.S.: From the video, it is actually confirmed that he went back to his original timeline to hand his shield to Sam, I just wonder how,he didn't come out of the portal...

@@NM-ej3xw N M This video is already outdated, there's a new video where the Russo's confirm that Steve (after Endgame Steve) stay in the past and married with Peggy while Steve (in the current past) still frozen. Russo's explained that in the funeral of Peggy Carter, there was actually two Steve, the other is the younger Steve, while Older Steve stay hidden somewhere in the funeral just so he didnt met with his younger Steve and messed up the current timeline since the Older Steve is from the future after Endgame. I know, it take times for me to understand how Steve suddenly getting old in the ending of the Endgame , but I was mind blown that the ending Old Steve was in the Endgame timeline all along and he already knew how the Avengers beat Thanos.

The way I understood it is that Steve traveled back in time and stayed in the past but created an identical reality from the main one and slowly, he waited for all the events from his reality to happen as they did in this alternate timeline until he reached the point where his younger self travels back in time and introduces himself, as an old man, to the avengers waiting for him to come back. So my headcanon is that old man Steve is reality hopping from his own reality to another. The Loop: 1. Steve from main timeline is sent to the past 2. Steve then enters the alternate timeline 3. Steve stays in that timeline observing the same exact events that happened in the main timeline 4. That was literally the whole point of their explanation. It's not just your head canon; it is THE canon. Although I'm not quite sure about how you said that alternate timeline Steve would do the exact same thing. The rules of time travel in the movie follows a branch reality rule and not a looped timeline rule.

But they're all identical bc they came from identical realities where the same exact events happen, the only difference is that each identical realities have a 75 year age gap from each others. If it's 2023 when endgame happens then all Steve needs to do is go to an identical universe where it's still 1948. Sorry for talking like a smartass there's an easier way to explain this

General idea in the comics is that the serum slows aging and is the reason begin frozen didn’t kill him. Not specified to what degree the aging process is slowed but something similar obviously has happened with Bucky, so....

@@summertyme5748 The Soviets froze Bucky in some sort of cryogenic pod when he's not sent on a mission, which is why Bucky remains young. The serum allows both Bucky and Steve to survive being froze, but it was the extremely low temperature that slows their aging down.

Or Steve got Howard Stark to make him a second shield before he died. He needed Vibranium to make it, so maybe Steve went to Wakanda and requested some Vribranium for Howard to make the shield, using his knowledge of the future to make it clear he was a friend to the Wakandans.

I think this makes more sense because it follows rules that the set in the movie about the creating branch realities. The writers did admit that of the reason they were for the same timeline Cap was so that they could potential play with the idea that in the prime timeline there were children that existed with part super soldier DNA. To be honest they could still play around with that idea but now its going to have to a spin off in a different reality.
